Grossmann Award
One highlight of the meeting was the announcement by Prof Remo Ruffini that Roy Kerr would receive the Marcel Grossmann Award at the 11th Marcel Grossman Meeting in St Petersburg in 2006. Although the official presentation will take place in St Petersburg, Prof Ruffini could not resist a piece of theatre in presenting Roy with his TEST sculpture to keep safe here in Christchurch, as seen in the series of photos below. The Grossmann Award recognises outstanding achievements in the fields of general relativity, gravitation and relativistic theories. Past recipients of the Grossmann Award include Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Francis Everett, Stephen Hawking, Roger Penrose, Tulio Regge, Abdus Salam and John Wheeler, among others. Fittingly enough, instead of a medal recipients of the prize receive the TEST sculpture - which is a mathematical representation of the paths of particles in the Kerr geometry - cast in silver. Full details of the Grossmann award are online at Remo Ruffini with TEST sculpture. (David Robinson is in foreground left.) Remo Ruffini and Roy Kerr

The Bruce Medalists Photo 1983, Space Telescope Science Institute Riccardo Giacconi 6 October 1931 1981 Bruce Medalist Born in Italy, Riccardo Giacconi earned his Ph.D. in cosmic ray physics at the University of Milan and then spent brief postdoctoral periods at Indiana and Princeton Universities. In 1959 he joined American Science and Engineering, a Massachusetts research firm, where he began work on X-ray astronomy . His team developed grazing incidence X-ray telescopes and launched them on rockets. In 1962 they discovered Sco X-1, the first known X-ray source outside the solar system. They then built the UHURU Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in 1973, Giacconi led the construction and successful operation of the powerful X-ray observatory, HEAO-2 , also known as Einstein , which made detailed images of X-ray sources. Giacconi was the first director of the Space Telescope Science Institute from 1981 to 1993, and he directed the European Southern Observatory for the next six years. At ESO he oversaw the development and construction of the Very Large Telescope . From 1999 to 2004 he served as president of Associated Universities, Inc.

Einstein's Masterpiece The success of Einstein's 1905 papers established him as an accomplished physicist. Upon request, he wrote several review articles explaining Special Relativity; in the process he realized that "all natural phenomena could be discussed in terms of special relativity except for the law of gravitation." Einstein struggled to define gravitation in his spare time By 1911, gravity had finally lured Einstein from other topics, and his thoughts culminated in 1916 with his masterpiece General Theory of Relativity . Many scientists did not accept Einstein's ideas at first. But confirmation of his theory came in 1919 when astronomers documented the deflection of starlight by the Sun's gravity. Einstein had predicted this phenomenon, but he could not foresee the fame that would follow. Seeing is Believing Sir Arthur Eddington led a 1919 expedition that captured the eclipse images needed to confirm what General Relativity predicted: the Sun's gravity deflects light. Age-old question Sir Isaac Newton wondered 1704: "Do not Bodies act upon Light at a distance, and by their action bend its Rays; and is not this action strongest at the least distance?"

Faces and places APS announces winners for 2005
The American Physical Society has announced many of its awards for 2005, with recipients who work in particle physics and related fields, from the physics of supernovae to accelerator techniques.
    Pier Oddone
Stan Woosley of the University of California at Santa Cruz has been awarded the Hans A Bethe Prize, which recognizes outstanding work in the areas of astrophysics, nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics or closely related fields. Woosley receives the prize "for his significant and wide-ranging contributions in the areas of stellar evolution, element synthesis, the theory of core collapse and type Ia supernovae, and the interpretation of gamma-ray bursts - most notably, the collapsar model of gamma-ray bursts". Nuclear physics is also recognized in the award of the Tom W Bonner Prize for outstanding experimental research in nuclear physics, given to Roy Holt of Argonne National Laboratory. Holt has been recognized for "his pioneering role in experimental studies of the structure of the deuteron, and especially for his innovative use of polarization techniques in these experiments". The 2005 Dannie Heineman Prize for mathematical physics goes to Giorgio Parisi of INFN-Seigone, "for fundamental theoretical discoveries in broad areas of elementary particle physics, quantum field theory, and statistical mechanics; especially for work on spin glasses and disordered systems".
