THE NINTH MARCEL GROSSMANN MEETING
On Recent Developments in Theoretical and Experimental General Relativity,

Edited by

Robert T. Jantzen (Villanova University, USA), and
Remo Ruffini (University of Rome, Italy) Series Editor: Remo Ruffini
In 1975 the Marcel Grossmann Meetings were established by Remo Ruffini and Abdus Salam in order to provide a forum for discussion of recent advances in gravitation, general relativity and relativistic field theories every three years, emphasizing their mathematical foundations, physical predictions and experimental tests. These meetings aim to facilitate exchange among scientists to deepen the understanding of space-time structures and to review the status of ongoing experiments testing Einstein's theory of gravitation either from the ground or space. The Marcel Grossmann Meetings have since grown under the guidance of an International Organizing Committee and a large International Coordinating Committee. The first two meetings MG1 and MG2, were held in Trieste

Családi háttér Grossmann családi hátterének vizsgálata világosan cáfolta a fent említett magyar származást. Apai nagyapja, Jean Grossmann (1812-1884) hönggi, anyai nagybátyja Friedrich Lichtenhahn (1806-1866) bázeli polgár volt. Apja, Jules Grossmann 1843-ban született a svájci határ közelében fekvõ francia Mühlhausenben. 1868-ban egy Budapesten tett utazás sorsdöntõ fordulatot hozott Jules életében. A kiegyezést követõ gazdasági fellendülést tapasztalva Jules úgy döntött, hogy Pesten folytatja üzleti tevékenységét. 1870-ben szerszámüzletet hozott létre, majd 1882-ben gazdasági gépgyárat alapított társával, Ranschenbach hal közösen. Grossmann tehetõs üzletembernek számított, vagyonát 1885-ben 150000 frankra becsülték. A cég 1889-tõl “Elsõ magyar gazdasági gépgyár részvénytársulat" nevet viselte, telephelye a Külsõ Váczi út 7. szám alatt volt

    Brief Description of Research
My current work involves exact descriptions of solutions of the vacuum Einstein field equations, for algebraically-degenerate Petrov types, especially those related to non-trivial (twisting) gravitational waves.
The complexity of the gravitational equations has led me to interests in other sorts of nonlinear physics and in general methods for studying them, the most common being infinite-dimensional Lie algebras of local and/or non-local symmetries of the associated nonlinear PDE's. The main interest is in solutions to Einstein's field equations, and in perturbations of both the solutions themselves and massless field equations defined over the corresponding curved spaces. The approach to solutions is physical in motivation but mathematical in content. I often use the methods of complex differential manifolds, leading to the study of the structure of all possible self-dual spaces (H-spaces) with complex or Euclidean signature. A natural generalization of this is the study of HH-spaces, which may possess Minkowski signature, real, algebraically-degenerate cross-sections. Work on HH-spaces is proceeding by division into distinct Petrov types, leading particularly to the study of gravitational waves. This is being done in active collaboration with Jerzy Plebanski at the Instituto de Investigaciones y Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politecnico Nacional in Mexico City and the University of Warsaw in Poland.

My most active research area at the moment is in gauge symmetries of generally covariant theories. First let me give some definitions for the physics layperson. Then I'll give a fuller technical description below for the experts. General covariance means that the form of the dynamical equations is the same regardless of the coordinate system which is used. Einstein's general relativity, which is the successor to Newton's universal law of gravity, is generally covariant. This means that there is no special, preferred choice of spatial or time coordinates. It is still an open question as to how and to what extent this freedom to choose coordinates will be preserved in a quantum theory of gravity. In fact, it is precisely this lack of a fixed spacetime arena (with associated coordinates) which is the obstacle to the construction of a quantum theory of gravity. A Quantum theory of gravity, which would be applicable on extremely small spatial scales (of the order of 10E-33 centimeters) and time scales (of the order of 10E-45 seconds) does not yet exist. In May of 2001 I was invited to give one of the inaugural presentations to the Austin College faculty highlighting faculty research. My powerpoint presentation available
