Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln
9 October 1253
Had the leaders of the thirteenth century heeded this preacher, many of the disasters of the following three centuries might have been avoided. Robert was a peasant lad from Suffolk, born about 1175. He distinguished himself at Oxford in law, medicine, languages, natural sciences, and theology. He became what is now called Chancellor of Oxford University. In 1235, he was elected Bishop of Lincoln, in area the largest diocese in England. He promptly visited all the churches in the diocese and quickly removed many of the prominent clergy because they were neglectng their pastoral duties. He vigorously opposed the practice by which the Pope appointed Italians as absentee clergy for English churches (collecting salaries from said churches without ever setting foot in the country). He insisted that his priests spend their time in the service of their people, in prayer, and in study. He went on a pilgrimage to Rome, where he spoke out boldly against ecclesiastical abuses. Back in England, he spoke against unlawful usurpations of power by the monarch, and was one of those present at the signing of the Magna Carta. Grosseteste's scholarly writings embraced many fields of learning. He translated into Latin the

Grosseteste fought for the maintenance of the Magna Carta. He thwarted efforts of Henry III to control ecclesiastical appointments, and as a member of the baronial council he supported the reforms of Simon de Montfort Innocent IV for his excessive exactions and for appointing foreigners to rich English benefices; he also attacked the Curia for its corruption and indolence. N HIS PHILOSOPHICAL WORK De Luce On light, or the Beginning of Forms ], Robert Grosseteste contemplates as follows on the creation of all things through light
Thus light, which is the first form created in first matter, multiplied itself by its very nature an infinite number of times on all sides and spread itself out uniformly in every direction It was in this way that light proceeded in the beginning of time to extend matter which it could not leave behind, by drawing it out along with itself into a mass the size of the material universe This extension of matter could not be brought about through a finite multiplication of light, because the multiplication of a simple being a finite number of times does not produce a quantity, as Aristotle shows in the De Caelo et Mundo [Of Heaven and Earth] However, the multiplication of a simple being an infinite number of times must produce a finite quantity, because a product which is the result of an infinite multiplication exceeds infinitely that through the multiplication of which it is produced. Now one simple being cannot exceed another simple being infinitely, but only a finite quantity infinitely exceeds a simple being

English statesman,Poet, phylosipher, theologian and bishop of Lincoln, was born of humble parents at Stradbrook in Suffolk. He received his education at Oxford where he became proficient in law, medicine and the natural sciences. Giraldus Cambrensis, whose acquaintance he had made, introduced him, before 1199, to William de Vere, bishop of Hereford. Grosseteste aspired to a post in the bishop’s household, but being deprived by death of this patron betook himself to the study of theology. It is possible that he visited Paris for this purpose, but he finally settled in Oxford as a teacher.
It is written ,” the bishop said, “ that united we stand and divided we fall
In 1253, upon being commanded to provide in his own diocese for a papal nephew, he wrote a letter of expostulation and refusal, not to the pope himself but to the commissioner, Master Innocent, through whom he received the mandate. The text of the remonstrance, as given in the Burton Annals and in Matthew Paris, has possibly been altered by a forger who had less respect than Grosseteste for the papacy. The language is more violent than that which the bishop elsewhere employs. But the general argument, that the papacy may command obedience only so far as its commands are consonant with the teaching of Christ and the apostles, is only what should be expected from an ecclesiastical reformer of Grosseteste’s time. There is much more reason for suspecting the letter addressed “

Works
Grosseteste wrote a number of early works in Latin and French while he was a clerk (see biography below), including one called Chasteua d'amour , an allegorical poem on the creation of the world and Christian redemption, as well as several other poems and texts on household management and courtly etiquette. He also wrote a number of theological works including the influential Hexaëmeron in the 1230's. However, Grosseteste is most well known as an original thinker for his work concerning what would today be called science or the scientific method From about 1220 to 1235 he wrote a host of scientific treatises including:

The Rules of Saint Robert Grosseteste
Introduction
Robert Grosseteste, born circa 1170, was bishop of Lincoln from 1235 to 1253. Despite the title of his rules, he was never canonised he was too critical of the papacy to earn sainthood; indeed, on his deathbed, he proclaimed the pope to the the anti-christ. Grosseteste his name means "big head"; apparently he had a small body and a large head was an intellectual, an Oxford don famed for his grasp of both law and theology. He was an enthusiastic and seemingly tireless bishop, who retained his interest in science; his book De Luce , a study of optics, was written during his first five years as bishop. He was also an enthusiastic builder the existing nave of Lincoln cathedral is his work. He was something of a maverick as both intellectual and bishop, unafraid to challenge both king and pope, and developing his own style of teaching though, perhaps surprisingly, he founded no school at Lincoln. He wrote these rules for his friend, Countess Margaret of Lincoln, probably shortly after the death of her husband, John de Lacy, in 1240. Margaret, as her widow's portion, was left four manors to run herself, hence Bishop Robert's advice. The rules were almost certainly written before 1242, when Margaret married Walter Marshall, the earl of Pembroke. The rules themselves are less concerned with agricultural management though that plays a part than with the way in which a noble should run his or her estate. They cover both the general (such as planning the yearly travels) to the specific (how to command servants and where to buy the best clothes). The work might be considered a medieval Emily Post.

ON LIGHT or THE BEGINNING OF FORMS Translated by Clare C. Riedl
It is possible, however, that an infinite sum of number is related to an infinite sum in every proportion, numerical and non-numerical. And some infinites are larger than other infinites, and some are smaller. Thus the sum of all numbers both even and odd is infinite. It is at the same time greater than the sum of all the even numbers although this is likewise infinite, for it exceeds it by the sum of all the odd numbers. The sum, too, of all numbers starting with one and continuing by doubling each successive number is infinite, and similarly the sum of all the halves corresponding to the doubles is infinite. The sum of these halves must be half of the sum of their doubles. In the same way the sum of all numbers starting with one and multiplying by three successively is three times the sum of all the thirds corresponding to these triples. It is likewise clear in regard to all kinds of numerical proportion that there can be a proportion of finite to infinite according to each of them.
But if we posit an infinite sum of all doubles starting with one, and an infinite sum of all the halves corresponding to these doubles, and if one, or some other finite number, be subtracted from the sum of the halves, then, as soon as this subtraction is made, there will no longer be a two to one proportion between the first sum and what is left of the second sum. Indeed there will not be any numerical proportion, because if a second numerical proportion is to be left from the first as the result of subtraction from the lesser member of the proportion, then what is subtracted must be an aliquot part or aliquot parts of an aliquot part of that from which it is subtracted. But a finite number cannot be an aliquot part or aliquot parts of an aliquot part of an infinite number Therefore when we subtract a number from an infinite sum of halves there will not remain a numerical proportion between the infinite sum of doubles and what is left from the infinite sum of halves

Robert Grosseteste
The Middle Ages have been largely considered a period of stagnation in thought since fifteenth-century Italian humanists attempted to separate themselves from their predecessors and began to trumpet ideals they believed they held in common with the ancient Greeks and Romans. The approximately one thousand year period that passed after the sack of Rome by the Visigoths, however, was not as dark as it is often portrayed. A number of advances were made in the Middle Ages in a wide variety of fields, including optics. Robert Grosseteste and his famous pupil, Roger Bacon, for instance, were both intrigued by light and its associated phenomena and made notable steps in the discipline. Robert Grosseteste was born around 1175 in Suffolk, England and attended the University of Oxford. Subsequently, he accepted a position under William de Vere, the Bishop of Hereford, and in 1215, Grosseteste became chancellor of Oxford. In 1221, Grosseteste left his post at the university and was provided with various sinecures, advancing steadily through the ecclesiastical ranks. In 1235, he was appointed Bishop of Lincoln, but for approximately five years prior to that time he served as a theology lecturer to the Franciscans, on whom he had a tremendous impact. Grosseteste’s religious views included a belief in the necessity of a highly hierarchical, centralized church, which he considered to be superior to the state, and an emphasis on the cure of souls. However, Grosseteste’s dedication to his religion did not blind him to concerns raised by science, and he consistently attempted to find rational answers to questions related to both the natural and spiritual worlds.

For thousands of years, the theme of creation has exerted a powerful fascination on men’s minds. The re-introduction of ancient thought into western Europe during the 12th and 13th centuries inspired new writings on the old themes, designed to meet the needs and answer the questions of a new age. A work of critical importance in this tradition was the Hexaëmeron of Robert Grosseteste, a study of
