He also wrote a number of theological works including the influential Hexa«meron in the 1230's. However, Grosseteste is most well known as an original thinker for his work concerning what would today be called science or the scientific method From about 1220 to 1235 he wrote a host of scientific treatises including:

    PART I
The Early Christian Roots of Modern Science
Now that we have seen how the underlying philosophical assumptions essential to a scientific outlook were most exhibited within a Christian culture, how specifically did modern science get started in Europe? It helps to put some personality to these otherwise abstract concepts. In this section, we wish to introduce some key thinkers, medieval to Renaissance, that were prologue to the scientific age. From 1 to 1000 A.D. The Medieval Philosophers Hugh of St. Victor c. 1096 - 1141 If you have read the Introduction Dan Graves in Scientists of Faith when fully understood thing , an object other than Didascalicon Didascalicon is obsessed with classifying things and pursuing knowledge, wisdom and virtue. Though antiquated in some respects, it contains core concepts that are like fertilizer and rain to scientific enterprise, compared to the deserts of authority and superstition in 1000 A.D. In closing, let Hugh of St. Victor speak for himself from ten centuries ago:

Had the leaders of the thirteenth century heeded this preacher, many of the disasters of the following three centuries might have been avoided. Robert was a peasant lad from Suffolk, born about 1175. He distinguished himself at Oxford in law, medicine, languages, natural sciences, and theology. He became what is now called Chancellor of Oxford University. In 1235, he was elected Bishop of Lincoln, in area the largest diocese in England. He promptly visited all the churches in the diocese and quickly removed many of the prominent clergy because they were neglectng their pastoral duties. He vigorously opposed the practice by which the Pope appointed Italians as absentee clergy for English churches (collecting salaries from said churches without ever setting foot in the country). He insisted that his priests spend their time in the service of their people, in prayer, and in study. He went on a pilgrimage to Rome, where he spoke out boldly against ecclesiastical abuses. Back in England, he spoke against unlawful usurpations of power by the monarch, and was one of those present at the signing of the Magna Carta. Grosseteste's scholarly writings embraced many fields of learning. He translated into Latin the Ethics of Aristotle and the theological works of

The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. R obert Grosseteste was born in 1168 and educated in the cathedral school at Oxford, in medieval England. He was as near to being a scientist as that world had to offer. When Oxford became a university in 1215, he was its first chancellor. Grosseteste was an Aristotelian in a Platonist world. Historian Margaret Wertheim tells us he lived a very strict monastic life, but he had Aristotle's talent for scientific observation. He looked for God's perfection, but he did so in the physical world. For Grosseteste, God was light. Understanding light meant understanding God. And since light followed the rules of Euclid, the way to light and to God was through geometry.

    Robert Grosseteste
(c.1175-1253) Bishop of Lincoln, 1235, one of the greatest scholars of the Middle Ages. He came from Suffolk and studied at Oxford, where subsequently he won fame as a teacher. He laid more stress on scriptural studies than on intellectual speculation. His insistence on experiment in science won the praise of Roger Bacon, and in addition to a commentary on Aristotle's " Physics ," he wrote original treatises in meteorology and optics, and pointed out the defects of the Julian calendar. His studies on Christian antiquities were so important that the beginning of the Christian Renaissance has been dated from him. He befriended the Franciscans on their arrival at Oxford, and encouraged their work throughout his life. From the inception of his episcopate he revived diocesan visitations, which he carried out thoroughly, though this involved him in difficulties with the Cistercian monasteries, on account of the exemptions they claimed. In these disputes he appealed to the supreme authority of the Holy See, yet he did not hesitate to oppose the abuses of the papal administration in regard to English benefices. The Bishop of Lincoln held a high position in the state. Personally on friendly terms with Henry III, he was frequently obliged to oppose the royal policy in both ecclesiastical and civil matters. After his death, he was regarded throughout England as a saint, but though efforts were made by several prelates to procure his canonization, they were unsuccessful.
