    Johannes Jacobus Janse van Rensburg
('Lang Hans') (gebore aan Sondagsrivier, dist. Swellendam, later Graaff-Reinet, 12.8.1779-oorlede Djindirivier, Mosambiek, einde Julie 1836), Voortrekkerleier. Sy identiteit is eers deur navorsing in 1965 vasgestel (A. H. Tromp) ).

    104. Groot Begijnhof, A Brief History
Originally, most of this text was based on the book The groot Begijnhof Gaspar johannes Enoch was priest in the Begijnhof during 37 years (1753 1790).

Groot begijnhof Leuven, a brief history
Originally, most of this text was based on the book The Groot Begijnhof of Leuven by W.A. Olyslager. Later additions and modifications have been made using other, more recent publications. For these and older references, mostly in Dutch, see below.
  • Situation
  • The Beguinage of Leuven lies on the banks of the River Dyle, in a quarter called "Ten Hove", south of the city center. The part on the left river bank is known as Spanish Quarter, but also as "Aborg", or, in Latin, "Vetus Castellum". This name could refer to the first castle of Leuven, which was conquered by the Vikings at the end of the Ninth Century. In 891, these Vikings were beaten by the German emperor, Arnulf of Carinthia, in the battle of Leuven. Although the exact location of the battle is unknown, it is possibly the present site of the Beguinage.
The actual history of the Beguinage only starts in the Twelfth Century. For Europe, this was an era of economical, cultural and religious revival. The crusades had brought men in touch with Arabic science and culture. Society evolved from a feudal, purely agrarian model to a new type, based on trade and international contacts. This is also the period of the origin of towns. In this society, finding enough food was no longer the only and central question: people had more fundamental questions and were trying to give their lifes sense. This climate gave rise to a broad mystical movement in Europe.
Religious revival was also due to the end of the Investiture Struggle (1075-1122). In the 11th century, bishops and prelates were appointed by local civil authorities like dukes, kings or emperors. After a long and complicated "struggle" the pope regain his (exclusive) prerogatives concerning religious affairs.

I am dedicating this page to the Groat side of my family. It has been such fun to learn about them and what their lives were like (so far all good news. Ha,ha). They were hard workers and were not afraid to try their hand at something new.
In the 1600's, a young man came to America from Holland
aboard the ship "Prince Mauritz" as a boatswain. His name was Symon Symonse Groot. He was the start of our Groot/Groat family. Symon married a young lady that he met while living in Fort Orange (which is now known as Albany, NY). Her name was Rebecca du Truiex, she was a pretty young maid and Symon was "taken" with her right away. At least that is what I would like to think. Rebecca's dad was the court messenger of New Amsterdam (which was NY City). They lived in Albany a short time after their marriage, and then moved to Beverwyck (today is known as Schenectady, NY, which means a place beyond the pines). They moved to an area that is now known as the "Stockade" where they owned quite a bit of land. They had 6 sons and 3 daughters. They were farmers and church going people.
The fate of Schenectady was sealed in the middle of January, 1690, when 114 Frenchmen and 96 Sault and Algonquin Indians, started from Montreal to attack English outpost to the south. It was part of the master plan to fulfill the wishes of French King Louis XIV to "build a new empire in America".

    Johannes Kerkorrel
