Duncan Gregory 's great great grandfather was James Gregory and he was the youngest son of another James Gregory (1753-1821) who was professor of medicine at Edinburgh University. His mother was Isabella McLeod and she was left to bring up the family after Duncan's father died when he was seven years old. Duncan was educated by his mother until he was ten years old then, after this, by a private tutor. His liking for constructing mechanical devices was noticed at this early age. In October 1824 he entered Edinburgh Academy (where Maxwell and D'Arcy Thompson were to be educated). He showed great promise at school and, during the winter of 1827, Gregory was sent to an academy in Geneva where his mathematical talents were obvious to the teachers. On his return from Geneva, Gregory became an undergraduate at Edinburgh University where he began to study advanced mathematical topics and he also conducted experiments with polarised light. He was most influenced by William Wallace who held the chair of mathematics at Edinburgh University.

Thelma Myrtle Duncan (Brown)
writer, playwright, and music teacher
The St. Louis, Missouri-born writer received her college education at Howard University, Washington, DC and Columbia University, New York. At Howard, during the 1920s, she discovered her talents as a writer, under the tutelage of Thomas Montgomery Gregory and later published in Plays of Negro Life ), edited by Gregory and Alain Locke . In Duncan graduated from Howard (cum laude) with a degree in music and reluctantly embarked on a career as a music teacher, working in North Carolina while continuing to write, before setting out on a motor trip through New Mexico, El Paso, Texas, and Mexico. By , the writer had returned to La Junta, Colorado and the home of her parents, with the hope of pursuing a full-time writing career. In Willis Richardson Plays and Pageants from the Life of the Negro . However, the then twice-published playwright had earned little money from her craft and regretfully continued giving music lessons to earn a living. Duncan expressed her dismay in a letter to Gregory, who continued to mentor her well after her Howard days:

Andrew Duncan DUNCAN, ANDREW, SENR. M.D., an esteemed physician and professor of the institutions of medicine in the university of Edinburgh, was born at St Andrews on the 17 th eloge on some deceased ornament of the profession; and among others, those read by Dr Duncan on the lives of Alexander Munro primus, Alexander Munro secundus, and Sir Joseph Banks, merit particular notice. Dr Duncan occasionally stepped aside from the ordinary avocations of his profession to indulge in effusions - both prose and verse—little consonant with the more general tenor of his occupations. Among these we may notice, a work he published entitled, "Elogiorum Sepulchralium Edinensium delectus—Monumental inscriptions selected from burial grounds near Edinburgh ;" in the preface of which, speaking as the editor, he observes: "Since the death of an amiable son, the editor has made it with him; finding himself rather unwell in the morning, he was under the necessity of retiring and confining himself to his chamber. From this period he was never able to go abroad. His appetite and flesh failed him, and without having suffered any acute distress, he expired on the 5th of July, in the eighty-fourth year of his age.
