David Gregory was a nephew of James Gregory . Perhaps the first thing we should note is the spelling of 'Gregory'. The Scottish spelling of this name was 'Gregorie' and the subject of this biography was known as 'David Gregorie' until he went to live in England. His father, also named David Gregorie, was a doctor practising on the Kinnairdy estate in Banffshire while his mother was Jean Walker of Orchiston. David junior was the fourth of his parents' fifteen children and when he was five years old his father inherited Kinnairdy and the family moved there from Aberdeen. It is uncertain where David attended school, but it is thought that he attended Aberdeen grammar school. We know for certain that Gregory studied at Marischal College, part of the University of Aberdeen, between 1671 and 1675. Notice that he started his university education at the age of 12 years. There is however, no evidence that he took his degree. After his university studies David, still only 16 years old, returned to live with his family at Kinnairdy but by this time his mother had died (her death occurred in the year that he entered Marischal College). At this stage he became more interested in mathematics for after his uncle James Gregory died in October 1675 he left his papers to David's father and David began to study them carefully. Leaving Scotland in 1679, he visited several countries on the Continent, particularly the Netherlands and France, and did not return to Scotland until 1681.

This site is devoted to the genealogy of the Yarmovsky family. Shmuel David Yarmovsky (1840-1930) and Hene Silverstein (1848-1941) had 14 children from 1866 to 1894: Eli (Hillel), Sara (Sorke), Esther, Meri, Libby (Liba), Marks (Mordechai), Rachel, Feigel, Morris (Moshe), Dina (Yenta), Berl, Dora (Devora), Hyman (Chaim), and Bertha (Brine). According to family stories, there were also two other children who died in childhood. Most of the children were employed as young adults as tailors or weavers. The following picture is estimated to be from about 1898. It was taken in Bialystok and shows Hene, Hyman, Shmuel David and Berl. The Yarmovsky family resided in at least three places in Europe: Porechany (also known as Paracany and Porzeczany, about 7 miles southwest of Lida), Belarus; Dyatlovo (also known as Dziatlava in Russian and previously known as Zdzieciol in Polish and Zhetl in Yiddish), Belarus; and Bialystok , Poland. Most of the children emigrated from what was Russia at the time to England, the U.S.A., Canada, and Australia. By 1893, the family was located in Bialystok where their name was spelled as Jarmowska in Polish. The family lived at #1 Zytnia St., Bialystok, for many years.

Significant Scots
David Gregory GREGORY, DAVID, An anecdote is told of David Gregory of Kinnairdie, Dr Gregory’s father, which it would not perhaps, be altogether proper to omit. He had, as was remarked at the beginning, a turn for mathematical and mechanical subjects, and during queen Anne’s wars had contrived a method to increase the effect of field ordnance. He sent it to the Savilian professor, his son, wishing his opinion, together with Sir I. Newton’s. Gregory showed it to Newton, who advised him earnestly to destroy it, as said Newton, "Any invention of that kind, if it even were effectual, would soon become known to the enemy, so that it would only increase the horrors of war." There is every reason to think that the professor followed Newton’s advice, as the machine was never afterwards to be found. It is a more singular circumstance, and indeed without parallel in the scientific history of Scotland, that this old gentleman lived to see three of his sons professors at the same time, viz. David, the subject of the preceding sketch; James, who succeeded his brother in the chair of mathematics at Edinburgh; and Charles, professor of mathematics in the university of St Andrews.

Hartford History
'Structures and Styles' of Hartford Architecture
This article, by Kevin Flood, first appeared in the Journal Inquirer on April 14, 1989. So you think you know every square inch of Hartford. All right, where's Little Hollywood? Hint: It's in the west end off Farmington Avenue. Give up? It's a row of brick apartment buildings along Owen Street, supposedly given its nickname as a tribute to the beautiful young women who moved in there when it opened in the 1920s. Stop to look at the buildings some day, and you'll notice their unusual mix of architectural styles - one has a slightly Moorish design while another echoes the Tudor Revival. Gregory E. Andrews and David F. Ransom throw the spotlight on Little Hollywood and 500 other examples of Hartford architecture in their book, "Structures and Styles: Guided Tours of Hartford Architecture." Published by the Connecticut Historical Society and the Connecticut Architecture Foundation, "Structures and Styles" highlights everything from downtown's Old State House to the trendy Comet Diner on Farmington Avenue, from pressed brick apartment buildings in the South End to Gothic churches in the North End. While the book covers all of the expected landmarks, like the Colt Armory and the Travelers tower, its ultimate value lies in the attention it lavishes on dozens of lesser-known and even obscure buildings.

Administrative/Biographical History
The mathematician James Gregory was born at the Manse of Drumoak, Aberdeenshire, in November 1638. He was educated in Aberdeen and then studied at Marischal College in the city. His scientific talent was encouraged by his inventor brother, David Gregory (1627-1720) and at the age of twenty-four he published Optica promota (1663) which was a description of a reflecting telescope which he had invented in 1661. Between 1664 and 1667, Gregory studied mathematics in Padua, Italy, and while there he published Vera circuli et hyperbolae quadratura (1667) in which he showed how to find the areas of the circle, ellipse, and hyperbola. After his return to Britain, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in June 1668. The same year he published his
