Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts Shantaram is the fictionalized account of the real life adventures of author Gregory David Roberts. The narrator is a man called Lin, escaped from an Australian jail and arriving in Bombay, India with a fake New Zealand passport. He immediately meets a taxi driver named Prabaker who gives him tours of the city and a hut in the local slum. Lin starts a free clinic for the people in the slum, and to provide for his own income, he sells drugs to tourists. This gets him the attention of the local gangsters, and he's increasingly pulled into their world of crime, from counterfeiting to gun running to passport schemes. Lin falls in love, nearly dies in an Indian prison, and survives a continuing series of adventures. More than just an account of drugs and crime, Shantaram is the story of a man who, even in a life of violence, genuinely loves those in his life and the city that became his home, Bombay.

In 1947, James Mason and his wife Pamela Kellino made their American stage debuts in a Broadway show, "Bathsheba." Seeing the production torn between drama and comedy, Mason predicted that it would flop, and he was correct. "Bathsheba" lasted for only 29 performances, and the New York Times called it "a long diffuse evening." Nevertheless, Darryl Zanuck owned the film rights and saw that some better scripting and more emphasis on sexuality could set the show right. Philip Dunne would address the first problem, and to ignite the flames on screen, Zanuck turned to Peck and Susan Hayward, the twin hottest properties in Hollywood in the late forties/early fifties. Objections to the red-headed, non-Semitic-looking Hayward were brushed aside, knowing that her looks could undo even David's piety. Initially, Hayward had some concerns about the film title. Couldn't it stay "Bathsheba" or be changed to "Bathsheba and David"? She sensed that it would be Peck's film and was upset by her starlet treatment by Henry King that led one critic to see her as a "lovesick cheerleader admiring the football hero" and breathing lines like, "David did you REALLY kill Goliath? Was he as big as they say?" On the other hand, critics unanimously applauded Peck's performance.

Roberts, who had got into drugs after his marriage failed and his wife took away their daughter, started robbing banks with a toy pistol. He wanted money to support his drug habit. The Australian authorities were not amused with the misadventures of Roberts, a highly regarded academic heading for a bright future as a philosopher and a radical who fought the establishment. When he received over 10 years of maximum imprisonment, he began plotting his escape from Day 1. He arrived in India under a false passport in 1982 after having served about five years of his prison term. Hoping to lead an anonymous life in India, he chose Mumbai where he would soon acquire proficient Marathi and set up a free clinic for slum dwellers. But within three years the local underworld recruited him to smuggle passports and foreign currency. In the middle of his illegal activities, he worked as an extra in dozens of Hindi films, then went to Germany and started a band. But he could not put behind his criminal activities.
