From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
This article is about the scientist George Green. For the place called George Green in Berkshire, England see George Green, Berkshire George Green 14 July 31 May ), was a British mathematician and physicist who wrote An Essay on the Applications of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism in . The essay introduced several important concepts, among them a theorem similar to modern Green's theorem , the idea of potential functions as currently used in physics , and the concept of what are now called Green's functions Green's life story is remarkable in that he was almost entirely self-taught. He was born and lived for most of his life in the English town of Sneinton Nottinghamshire , nowadays part of the city of Nottingham . His father (also named George) was a baker who had built and owned a brick windmill used to grind grain. The younger Green only had about one year of formal schooling as a child, between the ages of 8 and 9.

LITTLE RED HAT (DWARF) The Cap, Little Hat (GIANTS) GREEN GEORGE He is a demon or god of vegetation, youth, strength, love, fertility, harvest, cattle, but also god of anger, fury and war, protector of the poor and firstborn children. Some claim that he is the son of Perun, the embodiment of man's connection with nature, the Croatian pre-Christian agricultural and cattle deity. In the written sources he is described as a man with a cape and a flower wreath on his head, a sheaf in his left hand and a human head in his right hand. Christianity replaced him with St.George, a Roman army officer and martyr from the time of persecution of Christians in the 4th century. At the time of the crusades he became the symbol of an ideal Christian knight who persecuted the dragon on his white horse. (White horses are called ''zelenko'' in Croatian and the word ''zelen'' means ''green''.) He took over this role from the creature Golem from the eastern mythology. Golem was also Adam's name before God gave him life and the power of speech. Golem cut off the dragon's head with a sword and thus saved the maidens who were supposed to be sacrificed to him. He saved all the others and the nature from the fear of him and made them rejoyce and celebrate life. It is mentioned in some sources that he gave the dragon's head to Christ who is sometimes depicted as stepping on the dragon's head.

pub: Bantam. 410 page enlarged paperback. Price: £10.99 (UK). ISBN: 0-593-05197-1 check out website: www.booksattransworld.co.uk I t's always a pleasure when a book completely defies expectations and George Green's 'Hound' is definitely a prime example. Being self-confessedly clueless to the ins and outs of Ulster mythology, I was personally expecting a hard slog through yet another Celtic myth-inspired fantasy. Not that mythological re-tellings saturate the market these days or anything, but this back cover blurb is obviously catering towards those who like their mythology po-faced and stirring. So kudos to George Green for producing one of the wittiest, most exuberant books I've read in any genre, let alone mythology. Yes, I'm sure it is 'thrilling and timeless', too, as the blurb would have it, but that's really not the point: it's funny and clever and that wasn't what I expected at all. Part of the pleasure is that Green chooses to retell the story of Cuchullain, the 'Hound' of the title, not directly or in classic mythic style, but through the eyes of Cuchullain's charioteer, Leary. Considering Leary was a German/Roman shipwrecked on Ulster, it's not your usual perspective.

    Green, George (1793-1841)

English mathematician and physicist who attempted to provide a mechanical foundation for the theory of an elastic solid ether To do so, he developed the mathematical theory of elasticity proposing two different theories. In the process, he paved the way to modern theories of electricity and magnetism Green also derived the laws of optics from a mathematical function expressing the properties of ether in analytic form. His most important work was An Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism (1828), which contained Green's theorem (a special case of Gauss's theorem in the plane). Green's theorem was discovered independently in Russia by Ostrogradski . He recognized for the first time the importance of potential functions in a 1828 paper. He also introduced Green's functions as a means of solving boundary value problems and developed integral transform theorems. Ostrogradski
