20D: Abstract Finite Groups
Introduction
In this section we discuss finite groups only. Moreover, we study the internal properties of those groups material on their representation (20C) or permutation actions (20B) or cohomology (20J) are for now on the main group theory page . One may characterize this page as holding all those results about group theory for which a consideration of the order of elements is a central part of the question. We include here some topics in permutation groups when the groups are obviously finite (e.g. the Rubik group), although these will eventually be moved to a separate section 20B.

Progress on the classification of finite simple groups picked up speed in the last part of the twentieth century. At the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Nice in 1970, John Thompson was awarded a Fields Medal for his classification of the minimal simple groups, and a wider class of simple groups called N-groups. At the prize ceremony, Brauer was the person asked to comment on Thompson's achievements. In his talk, he gave an outline of some of Thompson's work, beginning with the odd order theorem of Feit and Thompson. At the conclusion, he said [14, p. 16]: Let me finish with a personal remark. One reaches a point in life where one wonders what one still expects of life, what one would like to see happen. This applies to events in mathematics too. I have passed the point I mentioned. I like to say that I would like to see the solution of the problem of the finite simple groups and the part I expect Thompson's work to play in it.

She and her coauthor, Professor Robert Wilson, have found four new maximal subgroups of the monster simple group. Her most recent work uses the factorizations in simple groups to make codes. Professor Chris Parker and his collaborators have been working on theorems designed to recognise simple groups from some fragment of their p-local subgroup structure. For example they have shown that the Monster simple group can be identified from its 5- and 7-local subgroups and that the Baby Monster and the Harada Norton group can be recognized from their 5-local subgroup structure. These results will be of use in the ambitious programme to revise the classification of the finite simple groups using techniques related to the so-called amalgam method.
