Hilbert's Space: aspects of one century and prospects for the next

Slides 37, 51 and 54 were omitted.] [Slide 1] When I knew two years ago that I was probably going to be giving the Retiring President's Address, I started asking people what aspect of my work in the Protein Sequence Database they would be most interested in hearing about. Their responses made me decide to talk about something else. During the year 1900 various members of the Philosophical Society of Washington prepared reports on developments in the fields of science in which they had expertise. Most of these were rather dry reports on geology and geography, so I thought I would look at a very influential speech given in 1900 by [Slide 2] Building on his existence proof and using constructions from algebraic number fields, Hilbert in 1892 was able to demonstrate how solutions could be obtained in a finite number of steps for any specific case under Gordan's Theorem. This demonstration of the utility of existence proofs finally led Gordan to concede "I have convinced myself that theology also has its merits." In this period Hilbert also worked in number theory along with his childhood friend

Hilbert I. Introduction
II. Biography
David Hilbert was born on January 23, 1862 in Konigsberg, Prussia, now Kaliningrad, Russia. His father, Otto Hilbert, was a city judge, a very respectable position in a small city. Constance Reid indicates that Hilbert largest influence came from his mother Maria, "an unusual woman... interested in philosophy and astronomy and fascinated by prime numbers." As a young boy, Hilbert quickly found that mathematics came very easily to him. Since the gymnasium he attended emphasized language, particularly Latin, over math and science, he put aside his love for mathematics temporarily and concentrated on his weaker subjects, vowing to return to mathematics as soon as possible. He attended the university in Konigsberg, studying under Heinrich Weber, the only full professor of mathematics in Konigsberg. He visited the university in Heidelberg for a semester to hear lectures on differential equations by Leonard Fuchs. In 1882, Hermann Minkowski, a fellow student at Konigsberg, won the prestigious Grand Prix des Sciences Mathmatiques of the Paris Academy at the age of 17. Hearing of this unprecedented accomplishment, Hilbert quickly became friends with the shy Minkowski. In 1884, Adolf Hurwitz became an Extraordinarius, or assistant professor, at Konigsberg. They developed the habit of taking daily walks "to the apple tree... precisely at five" to discuss philosophy, literature, women, and, above all, mathematics. The three had formed a friendship that would last to their graves.

49. The Heritage Of Emmy Noether - Book
started her graduate studies under paul gordan who was a colleague of her father. He was called ìthe king of invariants, for his work on the finite basis
http://www.cs.biu.ac.il/~eni/book_on_emmy.html
Emmy Noether was born in Erlangen, Germany, March 23, 1882. Max Noether, her father was a professor of mathematics in the university there. She grew up in a large, warm, intellectual family, and became a warm, gentle, exceptionally helpful person (there are many stories and anecdotes attesting to that fact). She was not an exceptional student. Being non-rebellious, she might have settled for the traditional feminine tasks, were it not for the new wave in Germany that allowed girls to study science in high school. From 1900-1903 she was a student in the University of Erlangen. This was an unusual phenomenon and she needed a special agreement from the professor in every course she wanted to attend. She started by studying languages and moved to mathematics. In 1903 she was awarded a Reifeprufung (university admission certificate) and moved to Gottingen. But, after one semester she moved back to Erlangen, since the university took a very liberal step and introduced equal rights for female students. She started her graduate studies under Paul Gordan who was a colleague of her father.

Curry, reggae and good vibes the right recipe for new Jamaican hot spot By Veronica Campanella The aroma of Jamaican jerk spice spills out the open door at the Irie Rasta Pub and Grill, Colorado Springs' first Jamaican restaurant. Soft white lights hang around the bar, colors flash over the dance floor, and silver lamps rise above the pool tables. In an open dining area, two families and a couple sit at the tables, scattered like islands between the bar and the dance floor. As dinner time approaches, the DJ turns up the volume on a Gregory Isaacs's track and the chorus plays, "My night nurse, only you alone can quench this here thirst." Isaacs' sultry voice and the steely guitar slides ease the stress of Jamaicans strolling in after work. The song enlivens the customers at the restaurant as the music accompanies conversations at the bar, revives a game of pool back to life, and stimulates a customer to bob his head to the rhythm as he scoops up a bite of curried goat dish, named the Selassie. "What's your play list lookin' like tonight?" asks the DJ's friend, as DJ Rob Spenser flips through a box of records at the bar.

  • Introduction Emmy Noether's paper "Invariante Varlationsprobleme" , hereafter referred to as I.V. , profoundly influenced 20th century physics. It was presented to the July 16, 1918 meeting of the by Felix Klein presumably because Noether was not a member of the Gesellschaft . One wonders if she was even present when the paper was read. The paper proved two theorems and their converses which revealed the general connection between symmetries and conservation laws in physics. They led to a deeper understanding of laws such as the principles of conservation of energy, angular momentum, etc., and also were instrumental in the great discoveries of gauge field symmetries of the 20th century. between Hilbert and Klein regarding this indicates that Noether's help was requested by Hilbert to clarify these issues, and that she then did the work whose results are published a few years later in

Sophia Korvin-Krukovsky, later known as Sonja Kovalevsky, was born into a family of Russian nobility in Moscow in 1850. Barred because of her sex, from pursuing advanced studies in a Russian university, she contracted a nominal marriage with the sympathetic Vladimir Kovalevsky (later to become a noted
In 1874, Sonja Kovalevsky was awarded, in absentia , the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Gottingen University and, because of the outstanding quality of a submitted paper on partial differential equations, was excused from taking the oral examination. In 1888, when thirty-eight years old she achieved her greatest success when the French Academy awarded her the prestigious Prix Bordin for her memoir "On the Problem of the Rotation of a Solid Body about a Fixed Point." Of the fifteen papers submitted for the prize. Kovalevsky's was judged the best;it was considered so exceptional that the prize was raised from 3000 francs to 5000 francs.
From 1884 until her death in 1891, Kovalevsky served as a professor of higher mathematics at Stockholm University. Her motto was: "Say what you know, do what you must, come what may."

    Phyllis Goodhart Gordan '35 Bequest
by Leo M. Dolenski The recent bequest of Phyllis Goodhart Gordan '35 has brought to the library a remarkable collection of Renaissance manuscripts, incunables, and research materials, complementing earlier gifts in the 1950s from her father Howard L.Goodhart. The young Phyllis Goodhart, while a student at Bryn Mawr majoring in Latin, developed an interest in the work of a major fifteenth-century Italian humanist Poggio Bracciolini, best known for his passionate search throughout Europe for lost classical texts. It is largely through his efforts that we have today a number of the works of Cicero, Quintillian, Manilius, Lucretius, and others. For many decades after her graduation, after marrying and while raising four children, Mrs. Gordan pursued her scholarly studies of Poggio, studies which culminated in 1974 with the publication of Two Renaissance Book Hunters: The Letters of Poggius Bracciolini to Nicolaus de Niccolis (New York and London, 1974). Her bequest to the library includes nine Renaissance manuscripts containing texts by Poggio and his close friend, the humanist Leonardo Bruni. The titles of some of these manuscripts, written in the then-new and beautiful humanistic script, reveal something of the scholarly and historical interest of these Italian humanists: De nobilitate, De miseria conditionis humanae, Epistolae familiares
