Jerry Williams: Peralta Barnuevo Peralta Barnuevo, 1664-1743, a native of Peru, is one of the two acknowledged geniuses who flourished in the New World (the other being Mexico’s Carlos Sigüenza y Góngora). A walking library, his encyclopedic mind produced over 80works that range from history, religion and medicine to literature, astronomy and military engineering. The Dialogue of the Dead dates from 1728. I have provided you a copy of my version of Cliff Notes as a guide to the text.** My talk will cover these five topics of teaching the text, as listed on the back of the handout:**: Socio-cultural and political circumstances surrounding its composition and anonymous publication; The role of literary academies in 18 th century Lima The question of the colonial readership and “hidden” codes of communication The influence of censorship on art and cultural production The satirical tradition and influence of Góngora, Quevedo, and writers of antiquity (Horace, Juvenal) Before I tackle the theoretical and critical aspects of the work, I would like to address on side of teaching a text which I have not heard referenced in the sessions that I have attended. In my case, it is a personal-political affinity that I share with the author, which guides my study of his works and which informs how I teach Peralta. The last time I taught the text in question, a graduate student asked why I had included it and Peralta as a course of study and why was Peralta important to me.      My answer: The advent of postcolonial studies opened the door to my examining the manner in which criollos reinvented themselves vis a vis their peninsular counterparts. The enlightened debates and writings of the 18

    Francisco Saverio Clavigero
Born at Vera Cruz, Mexico, 9 September, 1731; d. at Bologna, Italy, 2 April, 1787. At the age of seventeen he entered the Society of Jesus Jesuits were expelled from Mexico in 1767, Father Clavigero went to Bologna, where he founded a literary academy and pursued diligently his documentary studies in Mexican aboriginal history. He complied there his "Historica antica del Messico (Cesena, 1780), in opposition to the works of De Pauw, Raynal, and Robertson. While the "Historia antica" is the principal work of Clavigero, he had already published in Mexico several writings of minor importance. After his death there appeared "Storia della California", less appreciated but still not to be neglected by students. The "Ancient History of Mexico" made considerable impression and met with great favor. Following the book of the Cavaliere Boturini he included a list of sources, paying particular attention to the Indian pictographs, on tissue and other substances, forming part of the Boturini collection, and increasing the list by specimens then extant in various parts of Europe. The catalogue of Indian writers is also taken from Boturini, as Clavigero is careful to state. While materially enlarged since then, and though much additional information has been gained, his catalogue always remains of value. Finally he added a history of the conquest of Mexico. While other Jesuit Beristain de Souza, Biblioteca hispano-americana septentrional (Mexico, 1816 and 1883); Diccinario universal de Historia y Geografia (Mexico, 1853).

the first book printed in the Americas using decimal fractions was Carlos deSiguenza y gongora s Libra Astronomica printed in Mexico in 1690.
    http://www.pballew.net/arithme9.html
Math Words, pg 9 Back to Math Words Alphabetical Index Affine Geometry is the study of measures that are preserved under a transformation that carries each point (x,y) to a new point (ax + cy + e, bx + dy + f). This is sometimes described as a parallel projection from one plane to another. Euler was one of the first to study affine geometry. In an affine geometry Euclid's third and fourth postulates no longer apply.
The main root of affine comes from the Latin root finis for end or border. The prefix is a mutation of ad with the meaning near and the combination was used to mean sharing a common boundary. This was generalized to sharing a common interest of most any kind. Today affinity refers to an attraction of almost any kind.
Axiom In the language of mathematics and logic, an axiom is a statement that is considered to be true without need for proof. The word is often used interchangeably with postulate . The origin comes from the Greek root axios for worthy. An axiom is something that is accepted as worthy of its own accord, without proof or risk of refutation. The root shares a common origin with words relating to leadership or influence such as agitate, agent, and examine. Some other words from this relationship include agony, which originally meant a great conflict or contest, and ambassador (one who is sent around).
Although we often speak of Euclidean axioms or Euclidean postulates, math historian D.E. Smith has written that Euclid seems to have used a more general phrase meaning "common notion". Certainly he would have known of the word axiom as it was used by many of the ancient Greeks, including Aristotle.

At least, she never left it physically H Sister Maria was a mystic and a writer, and her works which still survive include books called The Mystical City Of God and Divine History Of The Virgin Mother Of God . Both books were written from repeated visions the abbess had. She died in Agreda on May 24, 1665, at the age of 63. Thus far we have seen the life of a not-particularly remarkable Spanish nun. Now, give a listen to Father Damian Massanet, as he writes to Don Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora, a high-ranking Spanish official in Mexico, in 1690. But who was this mysterious woman in blue? "She came down from the heights to us, she taught us the new religion, she stayed among us for a time, she told us you would come and to make you welcome, and then she went away. That’s all we know." And that’s all the Spanish could get from them. "Is this your woman in blue?" he asked.

    Quetzalcoatl
http://marauder.millersv.edu/~columbus/papers/graves.html The translation of Quetzalcoatl means literally Plumed Serpent. A more understandable translation would be feathered serpent. This point is interesting in that he very rarely appears in this form. He is more often depicted in many of his other roles, specifically as Topiltzin the high priest (Brundage 102-03). The significance of this will appear later in the paper, but suffice it to say the name is in itself misleading when referring to this complex deity of the Aztecs. All the previous versions of Quetzalcoatl are major ways the Aztecs expressed the powers that related to this deity, however the most famous, and for the purposes of this paper the most relevant expression is that of the high priest Topiltzin. This form is the only one in which he is truly human and it is from this form that he is said to have transformed into all the other manifestations that were previously discussed. The Aztecs saw Topiltzin as man-god, almost in the manner of a Hercules, not quite a god but much more than a man. He is often depicted wearing a copal bag, a conical headdress and at the front of his garments were in the shape of seashells. He is also depicted as being fair skinned and having a beard, supposedly to enhance his appearance of wisdom and age (Berdan 129).

Spanish Reading List (Updated 3/04) download pdf The following is a suggested minimum list of readings covering fields, which may not have been included in the student’s formal program of study.  The MA Comprehensive Examinations will not be for the purpose of reviewing course material, but will be concerned with the broader aspects of Spanish and Spanish-American literature: tracing the developments of genres, making connections between movements, and applications of historical background of literary periods.  It is assumed that the candidate will consult a standard History of Spain, a History of Latin America, the usual manuals of Spanish literature, and critical texts covering the various periods.  Professors who teach courses in the various periods may be consulted for advice in preparation for these examinations.  Students are encouraged to read recent and specialized criticism and not to rely exclusively of manuales e historias for background information.  Works that you have read in courses may be substituted for another work by the same author; for instance, another novela ejemplar may be substituted for Rinconete y Cortadillo (Cervantes).

That doesn't mean that you can get away without thinking about stuff, but it does mean that you don't have to spend all your time writing. The first homework handout is here ; the next two days are on the Master ID List Schedule of Readings and Assignments If page numbers are not indicated, then the entire chapter is assigned
