What is "Good Homework" for
Students with ADD/ADHD?
Chris A. Zeigler Dendy, M.S.
Teaching Teens with ADD and ADHD

reprinted with permission
Teenagers with ADD/ADHD are notorious for getting lots of "zeros" because they don't complete their homework. In addition, their school performance is often erratic: one day they do well and the next day they do poorly. For example, my son once made an 87 on a final exam but failed a class because he didn't complete all his homework and a make-up test. The seemingly simple task of completing and handing in assignments often erupts into a major battle between teenagers and their parents and teachers. Since homework, by definition, is done at home, a partnership between teachers, parents, and the teen is critica l to ensure that students with attention deficits successfully complete their work. So, suggestions are given on two levels: 1/ for teachers (this summary), and 2/ for parents (the next summary - not included in this web article).

Foundations are in place for martial law in the US

Recent pronouncements from the Bush Administration and national security initiatives put in place in the Reagan era could see internment camps and martial law in the United States.
When president Ronald Reagan was considering invading Nicaragua he issued a series of executive orders that provided the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with broad powers in the event of a "crisis" such as "violent and widespread internal dissent or national opposition against a US military invasion abroad". They were never used.

21,089 chess games now available here Recently a number of countries have established websites which are repositories of chess games in electronic format to be made available to chess players in general. This site is intended to hold games of Australian Chessplayers and games played in chess events held in Australia. It will be a long term project and will require the co-operation of many people. Many games are not currently available in electronic form and will need to be converted from bulletins and the personal records of many chess players. Many files placed on this site will be incomplete. If you have any information to help complete these files please don't hesitate to contact the Games Archivist. Files will be stored in PGN (Portable Game Notation) Zipped to conserve space and to quicken the download. PGN is handled by many chess databases and other chess software. Although the site is hosted by the Australian Chess Federation, any comments, complaints or offers of assistance should be directed to the Games Archivist, Paul Dunn . If you have any questions please check out our FAQ page by clicking here I have removed the file with all the games of this site in order to conserve space. If any one needs this file please email the Games Archivist and it will be sent to you by email.

Women Shaping the Nation
Women Shaping the Nation is a project marking the contribution of Australian women to shaping our nation over the past 100 years and is a key element of the Centenary of Federation celebrations in Victoria.
Woman Suffrage in Victoria
What is 'Suffrage'?
Suffrage is the right to vote in elections as a member of a particular group, citizen of a state, etc. (Now read on and find out what this meant to Victorian women). Women were able to vote in Victorian state elections in 1864. True or False? This is true because of an anomaly. In 1856 all Victorian adult men were granted the vote as long as they fulfilled particular property qualifications. By 1863 property qualifications were lowered to the level required for municipal franchise and it was decided that the municipal rolls would be used as a basis for compiling the state electoral rolls. The Act, which validated this procedure, used the phrase 'all persons' when referring to those on the municipal rolls whose names were to be transferred. Propertied females were given the municipal vote in the 1863 Act so their names were automatically transferred and some of those women voted in 1864 state elections.

Biographical memoirs
John Joseph Mahoney 1929-1992 By N. Fowkes and J.P.O. Silberstein This memoir was originally published in Historical Records of Australian Science , vol.10, no.3, 1995. Numbers in brackets refer to the notes at the end of the text. Foreword This memoir was prepared with the assistance of many of John Mahony's friends and collaborators. Many quotations have been included in an effort to enliven the prose and give a more penetrating account of the scientific aspects of John's work. In order to balance this essay some written contributions had to be edited; we trust in such a manner that the condensed account is still a valid expression of the contributor's views. The following words of Professor T.B. Benjamin provide an excellent overview of John's academic persona: I have always had immense respect for John Mahony's mathematical abilities in general, for his mastery of asymptotic methods in particular, and for his general scientific acumen. He was one of the cleverest and most inventive applied mathematicians with whom I have been privileged to collaborate. His comments in mathematical (and other) discussions were delivered in lively fashion and were often fractious and deprecatory; he was not a diplomatic colleague. His comments, however, were always acute and valuable. He was a superb scientist whose great accomplishments have not yet received the wide recognition they deserve.
