back to Crimes Against Humanity contents
"One of General Ashcroft's campaigns that has received a minimum of coverage in the press are efforts to set up detention and internment camps in the United States as part of preparations for the possibility of declaring martial law. This past summer, journalist Ritt Goldstein wrote two articles ` Foundations are in place for martial law in the US ' and ` Internment Camps and Authoritarian US Fast Becoming Reality that detail how `democratic freedoms which have long defined American life are under seige.' . . .
"Given General Ashcroft's zeal to create camps for U.S. citizens he deems to be `enemy combatants' (although FEMA's public claim is to handle millions of displaced persons in the event of a terrorist attack), it is not unreasonable to expect such camps will be employed to intern Americans. What would be Ashcroft's grounds for internment? Many people will go to the streets to challenge the brazen and continued aggrandizement of power in the hands of the Chief Executive and his officers if another alleged terrorist attack supplies them with more justification to identify and lock up enemy citizens. . . .

One in 24 Americans to be "citizen spies"
by Ritt Goldstein, Sydney [Australia] Morning Herald
July 15, 2002
The Bush Administration aims to recruit millions of United States citizens as domestic informants in a program likely to alarm civil liberties groups.
The Terrorism Information and Prevention System, or TIPS, means the US will have a higher percentage of citizen informants than the former East Germany through the infamous Stasi secret police. The program would use a minimum of 4 per cent of Americans to report "suspicious activity".
Civil liberties groups have already warned that, with the passage earlier this year of the Patriot Act, there is potential for abusive, large-scale investigations of US citizens.

By
Dr. Sam Goldstein
Dr. Sydney Zentall
Believe it or not, little attention is devoted to the topic of homework in teacher education. The homework practices of most teachers are developed on the job. When assigning homework, teachers must consider at least three factors:
  • Instructions are clear and understood by all students. Assignments are meaningful and within the ability range of all students. How assignments will be reviewed, returned and explained to students.
To some extent your child’s problems with homework may stem from the manner in which the teacher, assigns, explains and reviews homework. By understanding these concepts you can speak with your child’s teachers about how their homework practices could best meet the needs of your child. Take a moment and complete the Homework Tips for Teachers Checklist. It was designed to help parents identify the practices your child’s teacher uses in assigning homework. This checklist is meant for you the parent. But it may aid you if you choose to offer suggestions to your child’s teachers. If you are uncertain how to answer a question, check with your child or the child’s teacher. HOMEWORK TIPS FOR TEACHERS CHECKLIST 1. Does the teacher provide the purpose of an assignment?

Homework is important because it is at the intersection between home and school. It serves as a window through which you can observe your children’s education and express positive attitudes towards your children and their education. As children grow older, homework and the amount of time engaged in homework, increases in importance. For teachers and administrators, homework is a cost effective way to provide additional instruction in practice. Lets examine the six constructive purposes for homework in the context of your child’s educational experience. The first two are the most important and obvious. Through (1) practice and (2) participation in learning tasks, homework can improve your child’s achievement. Thus, it would be expected that if homework were completed accurately, not only would your child’s general knowledge and grades improve but your child would also increase mastery of basic academic skills, such as reading, writing, spelling and mathematics. Homework can provide other benefits. Your child’s ability to bring an assignment home, gather and organize necessary materials to complete the assignment, return the assignment and receive a grade, strengthens his or her sense of responsibility. Time management skills are learned. There is also improved (3) development of personal skills such as time management gained by completing homework. Further, when homework proceeds smoothly it can become (4) a positive aspect of your relationship with your child.

Susan Fereday is one of the few artists whose works in the National Library's collections enable us to trace her art over many years of her life. Works held in the Library include a sketchbook of her trip around Europe, dated 1831-34, and some of her sketchbooks completed while living at George Town near Launceston in Tasmania after 1846. Fereday was married to the local vicar who was more a scientist than a parson and she painted and drew many works for him. This beautiful self-portrait is highly romantic and there is a companion painting of her husband in the Library.

Sir M. James Lighthill " I think the subject I became interested in above all was mathematics. I am a mathematician fundamentally, although I have done many other things. I became very interested in mathematics at a very young age. I can never remember not being interested in mathematics, certainly at the age of three or thereabouts." Sir M. James Lighthill During the war in 1941, there was a rule that no one could have more than two years of university education. After that, students were expected to engage in the war effort. Bright students were managing to get the bachelor's degree in the two years. There were very few other people going to the postgraduate lectures that Lighthill and Dyson attended. As a result, Lighthill and Dyson had some of the greatest mathematicians almost to themselves. Sometimes there were only five students in classes given by G. H. Hardy, J. E. Littlewood, P. A. M. Dirac, A. S. Besicovitch, and many other top mathematicians. The ones that taught him most were Hardy and Littlewood, both great mathematical analysts. Both believed that their work was only of importance for its own sake and because it was pure mathematics, incapable of being used for anything. A famous book by Hardy, called A Mathematician's Apology , was written to make this point.
