Sydney Goldstein entered the University of Leeds in 1921 to study mathematics. He moved to St John's College, Cambridge graduating in 1925. Based on his very successful undergraduate career, Goldstein was awarded the Isaac Newton Studentship to continue undertaking research in applied mathematics under Harold Jeffreys His doctorate was awarded for a thesis on the Mathieu ( Emile Mathieu Manchester had a profound influence on Goldstein. The influence of Reynolds and Lamb in fluid dynamics was still felt there and had a strong effect on Goldstein. He moved to Cambridge in 1931 and took over, on Lamb 's death, the editorship of Modern Developments in Fluid Dynamics , this important work appearing in 1938. During the war years he worked on boundary layer theory at the National Physical Laboratory. Then in 1945, the University of Manchester made two inspiring appointments to the Department of Mathematics, Max Newman to the chair of Pure Mathematics and Goldstein to the chair of Applied Mathematics.

US planning to recruit one in 24 Americans as citizen spies
By Ritt Goldstein July 15 2002 The Bush Administration aims to recruit millions of United States citizens as domestic informants in a program likely to alarm civil liberties groups. The Terrorism Information and Prevention System, or TIPS, means the US will have a higher percentage of citizen informants than the former East Germany through the infamous Stasi secret police. The program would use a minimum of 4 per cent of Americans to report "suspicious activity". Civil liberties groups have already warned that, with the passage earlier this year of the Patriot Act, there is potential for abusive, large-scale investigations of US citizens. As with the Patriot Act, TIPS is being pursued as part of the so-called war against terrorism. It is a Department of Justice project. Highlighting the scope of the surveillance network, TIPS volunteers are being recruited primarily from among those whose work provides access to homes, businesses or transport systems. Letter carriers, utility employees, truck drivers and train conductors are among those named as targeted recruits.

Photo: AFP An Israeli deserter who murdered four Arab Israeli civilians was a religious right-winger trying to block next week's planned "disengagement" of Jewish settlers from inside the Gaza Strip, witnesses said. Israeli police were massing in Jerusalem and northern Israel yesterday to control possible demonstrations by Arabs enraged by the attack in the Druse town of Shfaram, near Haifa. The soldier, 19-year-old Eden Natan-Zada, was beaten to death after emptying his army-issue assault rifle into a crowded bus. Witnesses said he was initially seized by security men after his ammunition ran out but they were unable to rescue him from the angry crowd. Dressed in his army uniform, the young man boarded the bus in Haifa and waited until it stopped in Shfaram before beginning to shoot at point-blank range. Those killed were the 56-year-old bus driver, two sisters aged 21 and 23 and a 55-year-old man. At least 12 more were wounded.

    the government in the shadows
by Ritt Goldstein, Sydney Morning Herald - August 25, 2002
Nearly a year into the war against terrorism extraordinary things are happening. The Bush Administration is flirting with the possibility of America's military pursuing law enforcement, a member of the US Civil Rights Commission has broached the possibility of Arab-American internment, and the FBI's monitoring of domestic dissent and Internet traffic has intimidated many into comparative silence. There are fears that the organisation established to manage disaster relief, the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has evolved into an unseen threat to American life. Its origins began secretly during Ronald Reagan's administration when FEMA's domestic disaster management role was broadened to take in martial law and internment of so-called aliens and radicals. A joint exercise was held with the military to prepare for such a contingency, Rex-84. Concurrently, FEMA began assembling files on those whom the agency might target.

defense redefined means securing cheap energy
by Ritt Goldstein, Sydney Morning Herald - December 26, 2002
As troops and equipment pour into the Gulf for a looming war with Iraq, United States military thinkers admit that "defence" means protecting the circumstances of "daily life" - and in the US daily life runs on cheap oil. As far back as 1975, Henry Kissinger, then secretary of state, said America was prepared to wage war over oil. Separate plans advocating US conquest of Saudi oilfields were published in the '70s. So it should come as little surprise that in May last year - four months before the terrorist attacks on Washington and New York - a battle plan for Afghanistan was already being reviewed by the US Command that would carry it out after September 11. Military strategists were highlighting the energy wealth of the Caspian Sea and Central Asia and its importance to America's "security". The Indian media and Jane's Intelligence Review reported that the US was fighting covert battles against the Taliban, months before the "war on terrorism" was declared.

He immigrated to Australia in 1951 and arrived in Sydney on a Sunday, applied for a job as a butcher on Tuesday and began working on Wednesday. One year later he opened a kosher butcher shop in Sydney. He met his lifelong partner Hetty Richenberg in Sydney and was married in 1956. They moved to Melbourne in 1962 and when their son, Louis, finished his schooling, the family moved back to Sydney in 1975. Alex sold his kosher butchery in Kew, which would become part of Melbourne Kosher Butcher. In 1982, Alex and Hetty moved to the Gold Coast in Queensland to retire, where almost immediately he became involved with the day-to-day management of Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation. He was president of the shul for 11 years, which he was so proud to open and close every day. His passion for Yiddishkeit was expressed through his devotion to the shul and its members and the interstate visitors who he so dearly loved.

  • Jonathan Goldstein in TALK Intro by Jay Allison Sometimes you hear a new radio writer and it's like a breeze coming through. Oh, that's nice. Jonathan Goldstein sounds like that. His work for the CBC and This American Life can be funny and moving all in one sentence. He has made pieces about Travel, Telemarketing, Voice Mail, Love... and now he's written about radio. Prepare to be strangely moved by an image of pre-chewed food. Jonathan can't think of a title for his manifesto, but he has some interesting questions stored up for you, in case you can't think of anything to ask. Jonathan Goldstein's Manifesto
An Introduction I was going to start off by asking this: “Where does the person on the radio exist?” Then I was going to answer myself with this: “The person on the radio exists nowhere. He is already dead.” Next I was going to add: “The person on the radio has nothing to lose or gain in telling you the truth. When he enters the studio, he is entering the tomb. He encrypts himself, drinks from the water cup to cleanse his throat, and then steps to the mike as though presenting himself before the throne of God.” And finally: “The voices on the radio come to you as souls free of the body and, because of this, they are already closer to Heaven.” Then I thought, but what the hell do I know.
