The Archimedes Project is the digital library component of a major research project of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science dealing with mental models in the history of mechanics. The library contains key primary sources documenting the development from ancient to early modern mechanics. The collection browser of the project coordinates images and text and links the texts by means of language technology to dictionaries.

Marino Ghetaldi was educated in Ragusa, then he moved to Rome before travelling extensively in Europe. In Rome he was influenced by Clavius . He then studied at Antwerp and at Paris where he was greatly influenced by . He then spent two years in England. Ghetaldi was offered the chair of mathematics at University of Louvain but he turned the offer down. Ghetaldi's first paper appeared in 1603 and it was on Archimedes . In this he gave an accurate table of specific weights of solids and liquids. In a second work he studied parabolas obtained as sections of a right circular cone. had been working on constructing Apollonius 's lost works. In fact was often known as Apollonius Gallus because of this. Ghetaldi took over this work of . He followed Pappus 's description of the contents of certain lost books and to do this he had to solve the problems which the books were supposed to contain.

Romæ: Ex Typographia Bartholomaei Zanneti; 1614, with only very slight modifications with respect to the original manuscript, I do not transcribe it here in full, but only include some excerpts that shed light on Grienberger. Although the text is usually attributed to the "puerile" Florentine Giovanni Bardi who recited it publicly in the Collegio Romano, there are various reasons apart from the fact that the ms. is in Grienberger's hand to attribute the work to Grienberger. A primary reason is that it was, by this time, the established practice for Grienberger to write the mathematical problems presented in public, in accordance with the guidelines set down in the 1591 Ratio Studiorum , and as evinced by the other problems written, but generally not recited, by Grienberger conserved in the codices APUG Fondo Curia 2052. It would seem unusual for Grienberger to abandon time-honoured practice on this occasion and allow Bardi (aged only 20 at this point)

The book contains the first description of a case of what was presumably tuberculosis of the bone. He carried out morphological and microscopic investigations on human bones, using chemical reagents in order to bring out the fine structure. In 1720 he did a close study of the pneumonia epidemic raging in Rome. His study was anatomicopathological in approach and based on carefully conducted autopsies. The study led to his Relazione de' male di petto , 1720. He also published other medical works.

    Carlo (Charles) Billich
C arlo (now Charles) Billich was born on September 6, 1934 in Opatija (then Abbazia, Italy). [Add names of parents and where they were born, plus names of any siblings.] At home, his family spoke Istro-Venetian, Italian, Croatian and German. As a child, he identified himself with the aesthetic symbols of the Italian regime; as an adolescent he was enchanted by Art Deco which in Italy fell under the "Futurist" movement which for some was associated - rightly or wrongly - with the Fascist regime. Today, he calls himself a "surrealist" painter. painter born in Opatija
On February 10, 1947, the Paris Peace Treaty transformed Istria from an Italian to a Yugoslavian territory. Under Tito's new regime, Billich attended grammar school in the nearby city of Rijeka (formerly Fiume), and later attended the Institute of Economy, where he studied business, mathematics, algebra, geometry, etc. He had his first drawing lessons at the Classical Lyceum, together with humanities, then was accepted by the Corp de Ballet of Rijeka's Opera. Of this experiece, Billich said: "....this offered me the most exhilarating, though short-lived, dancing career. I still take around the world my inventory of metaphysical choreographic ideas based on ballet. Absurd hyperbolae which include exaggerations on human limits but exclude gravity. Student and dancer, I was drawn also to writing and illustration, and found a niche in the minority publishing in Istria, consisting of a daily, various magazines and books on the Italian language. I was fascinated by journalism and soon, abusing my position, I found ways of expressing my dissent by publishing surreptitiously "erroneous" ideas contrary to the system."

Chapter 4 Influence on Other Geometers The influence Jesuits had on other geometers is treated under two headings: a. In teaching other geometers b. In correspondence with other geometers a In teaching other geometers Apart from the direct contributions to geometry, the Jesuits indirectly influenced its development by their relations with non-Jesuit geometers. They did this as teachers, as relatives, as friends, as correspondents, and as adversaries. Gilbert Highet speaks about the Jesuit educational experience in the years before the suppression of the Society. The best thing about its method was the thoroughness with which they planned. . . .The Jesuit regulations made sure that the pupils realized what they were doing, and why. It is noticeable that very many of their pupils have turned out to be men of very strong will-power and long vision. A good modern example is the Irishman who spent seven years on writing a book about the events of a single day, and then spent seventeen more on writing about the dreams of a single night.
