http://www.surveyhistory.org/jacob's_staff1.htm
Article taken from "Backsights" Magazine published by Surveyors Historical Society When you hear the term Jacob (or Jacob's) staff, you probably have a mental image of a single pole used to support a compass. However, the original Jacob's staff was actually a surveying instrument developed in the 1300's that was used in making nautical and astronomical measurements. The original Jacob's staff, or cross-staff, was a single pole device credited to Levi ben Gerson (1288-1344), who was one of the leading Jewish mathematicians of the 14th century. The pole was marked in degrees, and the altitude of the stars could be determined by using a sliding wooden panel on the rod. The American version of the Jacob's staff seems to have only borrowed the name. Its function, as we know it, was to provide support for the compass. In a manufacturer's catalog from the 1880's, the surveyor's compass is described as being fitted to a slightly conical spindle with a spherical ball on its lower end. The ball is confined in a socket by pressure so slight that the ball can be moved in any direction in the operation of levelling the compass. The spindle and the ball-and-socket are part of the brass head of the Jacob staff. The brass head and a shoe, pointed with steel, were the mountings that we sold to make up the Jacob's staff.

Excerpt (almost complete): Keeper , pp. 239-241 January 8, 1936 Dear Doctor Ginsburg: Complying with your request, I shall put down in writing the statement I made to you orally with regard to the attitude of Jewish law and practice towards euthanasia. The earliest Jewish authority who discusses this problem directly and explicitly is Rabbi Judah of Regensburg, Bavaria (died 1217), who, in his work The Book of the Pious It is true Saul was justified in committing suicide (this is stated in as early a source as Genesis Rabbah 34:13); the honor of Israel required that its first King should not permit himself to be captured alive. But the Amalakite had no justification for hastening the King's death, and since shortening human life, even for a few moments, is punishable by death, he suffered by the hands of David the punishment he deserved. The correctness of the explanations given by our author for the justifiable suicide of Saul and for the [punishment by death] of the Amalakite is open to serious doubt and, as a matter of fact, there are several different explanations to be found in Rabbinic literature. I shall only mention the view of the famous philosopher and astronomer, Rabbi Levi Ben Gerson - usually called by the scholastics "Maestre Leo de Bagnols" - according to which David was solely motivated by his desire to uphold the newly established institution of monarchy in Israel (compare his commentary to II Samuel 1:14). Be that as it may, the author of the

Among the earliest of Hebrew books is this commentary on the Pentateuch by Leviben gerson (gersonides), printed by Abraham Conat in Mantua, c. 1476.

Judaic Treasures of the
Library of Congress:
Women of Italy
In the making of the Jewish book, women have played a role as publishers, printers, patrons, and writers. The first woman involved in printing Hebrew books was Estellina, the wife of the physician Abraham Conat, who introduced Hebrew printing in Mantua and published six Hebrew books there in 1474-77. A printing press had been established in that cultured city in 1471 and others followed. As David W. Amram writes in his The Makers of Hebrew Books in Italy At one of these presses Conat caught the inspiration to print Hebrew books, and communicated it to his worthy helpmeet, Estellina. She printed on her own account. . . "Investigation of the World" by Jedaiah Bedersi and in the colophon she writes, "I Estellina, wife of my master my husband, the honored Rabbi Abraham Conat, may he be blessed with children and may his days be prolonged, Amen! wrote this book, 'Investigation of the World"' . . . She "wrote" the book, as her husband said, "with many pens without the aid of a miracle," for the art had not yet invented the word "printing" by which to define itself. It seems clear that she had a hand in the printing and proofreading, both of which the word "wrote" connotes. It is most fitting that the Mantua of the Gonzagas, rulers who were patrons of the arts, be the place where a Jewish woman entered into Hebrew bookmaking. The Jews of that city were the most integrated into the general culture of any contemporary Jewish community, women as well as men. "The libraries of the women of Mantua," Shlomo Simonsohn writes in his

This conjecture had defied all attempts to prove it for more than 150 years, although Hyyro and Makowski proved that no three consecutive powers exist (Ribenboim 1996), and it was also known that 8 and 9 are the only consecutive cubic and Square Numbers (in either order).
