THE STORY OF PHILOSOPHY
home books pictures guestbook ... about Chapter Four
Spinoza 1. Historical and Biographical
I. THE ODYSSEY OF THE JEWS Guide to the Perplexed; it was at Barcelona that Hasdai Crescas (1370-1430) propounded heresies that shook all Judaism. The great majority of the Jews accepted the harder alternative, and looked about them for a place of refuge. Some took ship and sought entry into Genoa and other Italian ports; they were refused, and sailed on in growing misery and disease till they reached the coast of Africa, where many of them were murdered for the jewels they were believed to have swallowed. A few were received into Venice, which knew how much of its maritime ascendency it owed to its Jews. Others financed the voyage of Columbus, a man perhaps of their own race, hoping that the great navigator would find them a new home. A large number of them embarked in the trail vessels of that day and sailed up the Atlantic, between hostile England and hostile France, to find at last some measure of welcome in little big-souled Holland. Among these was a family of Portuguese Jews named Espinoza. This was 1640. At that time Baruch Spinoza, "the greatest Jew of modern times," [2] and the greatest of modern philosophers, was a child of eight, the favorite student of the synagogue.

Guidelines for papers
You will prepare two research papers for this course:
  • a biographical paper, due February 21 , that relates the mathematical career of a noted historical figure born before 1700; and a paper due April 18 that performs a critical reading of an original source of importance in the history of mathematics.
Your biographical paper should conform to the following guidelines, listed in order of importance, and will be evaluated against them:
  • The paper should present a comprehensively researched discussion of the life history of your chosen mathematician; this person's significant mathematical accomplishments must be thoroughly discussed. (35%) It should be presented in a clear and coherent writing style , using correct spelling, proper pronunciation and good grammar. (25%) It should contain a bibliography with at least three sources including at least three print-published (not Web) sources, it should make appropriate use of direct quotations , and should include in-text citations (as either footnotes or endnotes). (25%)

Earliest Known Uses of Some of the Words of Mathematics (H)
Last revision: June 2, 2005 HAMILTON and HAMILTONIAN are used to recall the work of William Rowan Hamilton (1805-1865). The terms in use today derive from his reformulation of mechanics and from the " Icosian game " which he invented and marketed. The game is now understood in terms of graph theory; see Mathworld. Hamilton’s long years of work on QUATERNIONS are recalled only in the name CAYLEY-HAMILTON THEOREM. Hamilton’s two essays on a General Method in Dynamics in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London (1834-5) gave rise to Hamilton's principle , the Hamiltonian form of the equations of motion and the Hamiltonian function .  All these terms appear in E. T. Whittaker Treatise on the Analytical Dynamics of Particles and Rigid Bodies (1904). The OED has a quotation from 1858, A. Cayley writing about forms of the equations of motion in Rep. Brit. Assoc. Adv. Sci. 1857 I. 15: "When there is no force function..the forms corresponding to the untransformed forms in T and U are as follows, viz. the Lagrangian form is dq dt q´, d

what was probably more important for his own development, with the philosophicalwritings of Ibn Ezra and Maimonides, levi ben I gerson, Hasdai Crescas,
http://54.1911encyclopedia.org/S/SP/SPINOZA_BARUCH.htm
BARUCH SPINOZA
SPINOZA, BARUCH In 1663 Spinoza removed from Rhijnsburg to Voorburg, a suburban village about 2 m. from the Hague. His reputation had continued to spread. From Rhijnsburg he had paid frequent visits to the Hague, and it was probably the desire Boyle, and acquainted with most of the leaders of science in England as well as with many on the Continent. He delighted to keep himself in this way au courant with the latest developments, and lost no opportunity of establishing relations with men of scientific reputation, It was probably at the suggestion of Huygens that he bent his steps towards Spinozas lodging. The title of the Latin original ranRenali des Cartes principiorum plmiloso ph/ac pars i. et ii. more geometrico demonstratae per Benedictum de Spinoza Amstelodamensem. Accesserunt ejusdem cogitata mete physica. Spinozas philosophy is a thoroughgoing pantheifm, which has both a naturalistic and a mystical side. The foundation of the system is the doctrine of one infinite substance, of which all finite existences are modes or limitations (modes of thought or modes of extension). (;od is thus the imnianent cause of the universe; but of creation or will there can be no question in Spinozas system. God is used throughout as equivalent to Nature (Deus Ave natura). The philosophical standpoint comprehends the necessity of all that isa necessity that is none other than the necessity of the divine nature itself. To view things thus is to view them, according to Spinozas favorite phrase, sub specie aeternitatis. Spinozas philosophy is fully considered in the article CARTESIANISM.

About Doron Zeilberger's Opinion #36
While I am very sympathetic with Doron Zeilberger's frank and direct way of expressing his ideas and while most of the mathematics he does with his companion Shalosh B. Ekhad has a strong appeal to me, I am far to agree with it on many minor aspects of his opinions. (It is better to have read Doron Zeilberger's text before reading this. Mathematician=programmer ?
  • No, a Ph. D. in math does not warrant at all the ability to learn programming, even when one has removed those very common psychological blocks DZ refers to. There is a lot to unlearn, there is the whole social implication of a researcher in the academic system. Moreover, we all now math Ph. D. who aren't smart *at all* and especially about mathematics. Introducing this kind of public to even mathematically-minded computer macro-languages like TeX is sometimes worth Hercules' works. Part of the trouble with any academic system is that there are areas, times and circonstances were you can be dubbed "researcher" or "professor" by only being a good schoolboy, no need to be smart or creative about the subject. In fact, the mathematics researchers I know who program well had most of the time a keen interest in programming or computers before they graduated. It makes me appreciate even more the senior mathematicians who are good with these tools or who switched successfully at a late stage in their career.

The entry for "Pascal's Triangle" reads
used the term "arithmetical triangle" (triangle arithmetique). In Italy it
is called Tartaglia's triangle and in China it is called Yang Hui's
