Geminus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Geminus of Rhodes was a Greek astronomer and mathematician . The dates of his birth and death are still under debate, but are generally accepted as approximately 110 - 40 BC He was a stoic philosopher and scholar, thought to have studied at the school in Rhodes and then later under Posidonius . During his career he wrote introductory works in mathematics and astronomy, and is typically credited with the construction of the Antikythera mechanism . His astronomical observations noted that the length of a day varied in different parts of the world. His book Isagoge was based on the work of Hipparchus His mathematical work divided the field into pure and applied mathematics. Pure mathematics included number theory and the various properties of numbers. In applied mathematics he included surveying musical harmony optics ... mechanics , and accounting The Geminus crater on the Earth's Moon is named for him.

Janus Geminus
Samuel Ball Platner (as completed and revised by Thomas Ashby):
A Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome

London Oxford University Press Ianus Geminus a shrine of Janus on the north side of the forum, usually referred to simply as Ianus Geminus or Ianus Quirinus (Hor. Carm. iv.15.9 Mon. Anc. ii.42 Suet. Aug. 22 ), but also as sacellum (Ov. Fast. i.275) sacrarium Serv. Aen. vii.607 (Plut. Numa 20) nao/j (Procop. B.G. i.25), and aedes (Macrob. Sat. i.9.18) , although it was probably not an aedes . It was also called geminae belli portae , (Verg. Aen. vi.707), Iani gemini portae (de vir. ill. 79.6; August. civ. Dei iii.10), pu/lh e)nua/lioj (Mon. Anc. vii.5) pu/lh pole/mou (Plut. Numa 20) porta Ianualis (Varro, LL v. 165), porta Iani (Flor. i.19.1) , and pu/lai tou= 7)Ianou= (Cass. Dio li.20) Tradition varied as to the date and origin of this shrine. According to one form of the story it was already in existence when the victorious Sabines under Titus Tatius were stopped and driven back by floods of hot water which Janus caused to gush forth from his temple and through the gate of the city sub radicibus collis Viminalis This gate was called the porta Ianualis from this event, and apparently identified or confused with the temple (cf. Jord. Hermes 1869, 252; Top. i.1.177; Pl. 191). A variant of this legend made the erection of the shrine a result of the intervention of the god (

http://www.drobe.co.uk/extra/geminus/geminus.txt
Press release received on Sat Oct 23 07:13:48 BST 2004, from the Aemulor team - For release not before 10am Saturday 23rd September 2004 Geminus project. Purley, Surrey. England. The team behind Aemulor, Aemulor Pro and Cino are pleased to announce their latest project : Geminus - a multiple-screen driver for the IYONIX pc. It allows several PCI graphics cards to be installed (upto the maximum number of free PCI slots-3 in current models) and your desktop can be split across several screens in various configurations. Features - provides screen modes which span multiple graphics cards, allowing the desktop to be used across two or more screens - supports up to 8 screens (Note: only 3 PCI slots are available for graphics cards in current IYONIX pcs.) - screens can be arranged in any configuration (left to right horizontally, right to left horizontally, vertically..) - each screen image can be rotated 90 degrees clockwise or anti-clockwise, allowing rotatable LCD panels to be used in portrait mode; great for DTP! - An API allows applications to create their own display surfaces (the desktop is just one display surface) and thus claim screens for their own, exclusive use, either drawing to them directly or via the OS VDU drivers. For example, Cino can take over the second screen for DVD playback, whilst the desktop is displayed in the first screen - makes full use of the hardware acceleration already available in RISC OS 5 on all screens, plus a hardware DMA channel to improve scrolling and copying performance between screens - graphical Configuration plug-in allows you to define your own large screen modes, specifying the screen positions and, optionally, rotations for each mode. Future Developments =================== Geminus doesnt just end there. We have a host of exciting features planned for the product, which will be made available in different "flavours" depending on which features you require. - R/B-swapping in software, allowing the use of other graphics cards which have not or cannot have their Red and Blue signals crossed-over (as per Castle's supplied NVidia cards), eg. digital DVI outputs. - low-colour modes (code to be migrated from Aemulor Pro into the Geminus module, allowing each physical screen to be used in any display depth, whatever its actual capabilities). - Geminus is ideally placed to further accelerate desktop operations such as sprite plotting and window redrawing. Some early prototype code has already proved that the plotting of texture backgrounds in particular can be greatly speeded up, leading to a noticably slicker desktop. Constraints The widths of the individual screens within a multi-screen mode are restricted slightly, as shown below: 16 million colours width must be a multiple of 256 pixels 32 thousand colours width must be a multiple of 512 pixels 256 colours width must be a multiple of 1024 pixels So all standard modes are available in 16 million colours (eg. 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024, 1536 x 1152, 2048 x 1536) A couple of example desktop modes available with 2 CRT monitors side-by-side : 2560 x 1024 x 16 million colours 4096 x 1536 x 16 million colours!! The first public showing of Geminus will be at the Guildford RISC OS show today, where we will also be selling second PCI graphics cards suitable for installing into the IYONIX pc, and a range of LCD monitors at fantastic prices. We anticipate Geminus will be available for purchase 3-4 weeks after the show as much of the code is already complete. Pricing for the multi-screen version of Geminus will be 25UKP+vat Modified (R/B swapped) PCI graphics cards are available at 50UKP+vat Upon release, we will be offering various bundles of Geminus, PCI cards and LCD monitors at discounted prices. Developed by the Aemulor team and revealed today at the Guildford show, presumably it's aimed at power users who want to work in one display while watching DVDs or TV in another other.

PLANET GEMINUS
The history of Geminus is a strange and violent one, though none remembers it any more. It was only a little over million years ago that a stray planet entered the solar system. It nearly collided with Domus but due to some most spectacular trick of forture was instead trapped on orbit around Domus. The stabilizing of the Geminus after this took a long time, but in time its atmoshpere was suitable for the same kind of life as on Domus. As it happens, the jadelfs entered the Geminus the same way as they did enter Domus. However, over time the jadelfs on Geminus developed to a totally different form from their cousins on Domus. They become more massive, like hills or small mountains abandoning the ability to move for more stability and longer lifespan. This they have done to succeed in their great goal: the terraforming of Geminus. Since there is no space travel, there is no way to traverse between Domus and Geminus - except one. The powerful jadelf wizards can in special situations establish ports for a short time periods that allow travel from planet to the other. Using these portals the jadelfs have transported living organisms from Domus to Geminus and thus started the forming of biosphere on Geminus. They have even transported some humans to aid in the task. The human population on Geminus is very small living under the shadow and in symbiosis of the huge Jadelfs. The Second Punic War: Hannibal by Cornelius Nepos Hannibal by Cornelius Nepos, Roman historian, correspondent and friend of Cicero, and the friend to whom Catullus dedicated his poems. ca. 25 B.C. Chapter 2. Aside from Philip, whom from afar Hannibal had made an enemy of the Romans, he fired up Antiochus, the most powerful of all kings in those times, with such a desire for war, that from far away on the Red Sea he made preparations to invade Italy. Chapter 3. Accordingly, at the age which I have named, Hannibal went with his father to Spain, and after Hamilcar died and Hasdrubal succeeded to the chief command, he was given charge of all the cavalry. When Hasdrubal died in his turn, the army chose Hannibal as its commander, and on their action being reported at Carthage, it was officially confirmed. So it was that when he was less than twenty-five years old, Hannibal became commander-in-chief; and within the next three years he subdued all the peoples of Spain by force of arms, stormed Saguntum, a town allied with Rome, and mustered three great armies. Of these armies he sent one to Africa, left the second with his brother Hasdrubal in Spain, and led the third with him into Italy. He crossed the range of the Pyrenees. Wherever he marched, he warred with all the natives, and he was everywhere victorious. When he came to the Alps separating Italy from Gaul, which no one before him had ever crossed with an army except Hercules (the Greek) because of which that place is called the Greek Pass, he cut to pieces the Alpine tribes that tried to keep him from crossing, opened up the region, built roads, and made it possible for an elephant with its equipment to go over places along which before that a single unarmed man could barely crawl. By this route he led his forces across the Alps and came into Italy.
