Cz³owiek, który spopularyzowa³ logarytmy W lutym 2001 r. mija 440 lat od narodzin angielskiego uczonego, którego talent matematyczny oraz zainteresowania astronomiczne, geograficzne i kartograficzne sprawi³y, ¿e sta³ siê "drugim ojcem" logarytmów.
Henry Briggs, bo o nim mowa, urodzi³ siê w lutym 1561 r. w Worley Wood w angielskim hrabstwie Yorku.

8. The Intrinsic Magnetic Field of the Earth A brief history of magnetic field observations Back to the Table of Contents.
For non-frames browsers. The magnetic field of the Earth is known to very high degree and order (~25) and the history of its variation over geological time is now quite familiar. The earliest recorded observations of terrestrial magnetism date back to the sixth century B.C, and the magnetic compass (in the form of the lodestone) is believed to have been invented as early as the second century B.C. The compass did not become known to European navigators until the late 12 th century A.D, however, and it was originally thought that the compass was pointing, not at some earthly location, but to the pole star. These ideas were largely overturned by the seminal work of Petrus Peregrinus in his Epistole de Magnete of 1269. Peregrinus defined the magnetic pole (and thus the dipolar nature of the magnet), the concept of polarity, and the magnetic meridian. Although Peregrinus observed the inclination of the field lines around a typical magnetic pole he did not make the intuitive leap to applying this concept to the Earth, and thus it was not until 1544 that the first measurements of the terrestrial fields' inclination were recorded (and even these were lost until 1831). Some of the earliest declination measurements were made by the Chinese astronomer Yi-Xing in 720 A.D, and the few observations recorded in the following centuries permitted an English astronomer, Henry Gellibrand, to discover the variation of the declination with time, in 1634.
