GARDINER, FRANK (1830-c.1890),
bushranger, In gaol Gardiner was a model prisoner, and, when he had served eight years of his sentences, efforts were made by his friends and relations to secure his release. The fact that for about two years before his trial he had led an honest life was much in his favour, and in spite of some protests from members of the public he was released in July 1874 when he had served 10 years, on the understanding that he would leave Australia. He went to San Francisco, lived an honest life for many years, and died probably about 1890. He differed from many notorious bushrangers in that he came of respectable people, and was not actually guilty of murder; but he was fortunate in escaping the fate of some of his associates who were executed. Charles White, Australian Bushranging, Gardiner "King of the Road" ; G. E. Boxall

Geophysics 110 History and Physics of Magnetism I. Introduction A. Lodestone - magnetite - 'attractive properties' Magnetite Octehedron in Matrix Natural Londestone B. Known to Greeks (~800 B.C.) and Chinese (~300 B.C.) C. Large supply found near town of Magnesia (Greece, 5 th century B.C.) D. Chinese - (~300-200 BC) - first simple compass, before 1000 AD pivoted needle compasses. Used for navigation (but not understood why it worked) E. Europeans - thought compass wanted to follow pole star. F. But is a fundamental property of the earth - a stimulus to the development of physics. II. Early Work A. Pierre Pélerin de Maricourt (1269) - lodestone sphere - mapped "poles". The earliest known treatise of experimental physics Epistola de Magnete B. Deviation from pole star - "Declination" known to Chinese (500 AD), British Navy (1400's). C. Mercator (late 1500's) recognized declination caused errors in maps (which assumed magnetic and geographic N were the same). D. Georg Hartmann (1544) - Magnetized needle - non-horizontal - discover "Inclination" E.

http://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/~rmallett/Generals/index2.html
General Officers of the First AIF
Grades of General Officers There were four grades of general officers in the First AIF, these being from least to most senior: Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General and General. As with all other officer ranks, they could be temporary or substantive, except for brigadier general, which was always temporary. Temporary rank was generally granted while an officer was serving in a particular capacity. When the job lapsed, the officer returned to his substantive rank. This prevented an accumulation of officers at high grades without posts for them. The rank of Brigadier General was unusual in that it was only held as a temporary appointment in the AIF. Most officers also held temporary or substantive rank in the AMF (Australian Military Forces the Australian Army back at home) as well as in the AIF. Some officers were promoted within the AMF while serving with the AIF. Officers holding higher rank in the AMF than their substantive rank in the AIF were entitled to retain the higher rank as an honorary rank. Seniority was on the basis of the rank and date upon which one had been promoted within the AIF. Where an officer had not been promoted within the AIF, regular army officers carried their seniority according to their appointment date within the AMF. Reservists who had not been promoted ranked below all regular officers, with seniority according to their dates of appointment in the active forces. Retired officers who joined the AIF and had not been promoted carried their seniority according to the date of their appointment to the AIF, but below other officers of the same rank.

73. The External Magnetic Field And The Crustal Field

The External Magnetic Field and the Crustal Field External Magnetic Field - a relatively small portion is generated from magnetic sources external to the earth partly produced by interactions of the Earth’s ionosphere with the solar wind hence the temporal variations associated with it. This field is only important in that we need to know it is present to be able to account for it when interpreting for the Crustal Field. Crustal Field – this portion of the field is associated with magnetism of the crustal rocks and contains magnetism caused by induction from the Earth’s main field and from remnant magnetization. What do the minor variations or discrepancies from a simple dipole field look like? This depends on the scale of observation and the causes. Geophysical exploration that measure small variations in magnetic properties of rocks has been accomplished since the middle of the 19 th Century. For example von Werde in 1843 located ore deposits by mapping variations in magnetic field and in 1879 Thalen published the geophysical manuscript The Examination of Iron Ore Deposits by Magnetic Measurements. The use of geomagnetism for exploration and on environmental sites will be shown in later courses. Two aspects of geomagnetism are however of general interest to us here namely secular variations and self reversals.

Cross-examined. - Mr. Gellibrand. - The words Ellen Speke her mark were written when the bill was written; I knew she could not write; you will observe it is written with a different pen to the other; I was Mr. Baynton's clerk; some days after, the bill came into Mr. Baynton's hands; this bill (another bill produced by Mr. Gellibrand,) is not in my hand writing; I do not know whose it is; Mr. Capon the chief constable came to me and asked me whether I ever witnessed such a bill; I told him I had; we went to Mrs. Speke with Mr. Capon, and she first denied that she dad[sic] ever given any note; then she admitted that she had signed the one which I drew.

Shuttle and Mir
Launch of STS-86 is due for Sep 25. The Mir crew moved briefly to the Soyuz transport on Sep 15 during a close pass by the inert MSTI-2 satellite, which was an SDIO satellite which operated between May and Sep 1994 testing infrared sensors for tracking missile launches. The close pass was reportedly only 500 meters.
Recent Launches
Ariane V100 was launched on Sep 23 at 2358 UTC. The rocket was an Ariane 42L model with two PAL liquid strapons. The payload is Intelsat 803, a series 7000 satellite built by Lockheed Martin Telecommunications/East Windsor. It was placed in geostationary transfer orbit and separated from the H-10-3 third stage on Sep 24 at 0018 UTC.
Errata
OK, OK, I forgot Mars-96 in the list of probes which were meant to go into Mars orbit but did not. Also, it seems that I got the EVA suit info the wrong way round: Foale used the old DMA suit and Solov'yov the new M suit. Also, I omitted Telecom 2D (launch 1996 Aug 8) from the list of Eurostar 2000 satellites.

Shuttle and Mir
The Mir crew have removed a clamp that was inadvertently left in attaching Progress M-35 to Kvant, preventing its undocking. Progress M-35 then successfully undocked at 1203 UTC on Oct 7 (info from Chris van den Berg). PM-35 deorbited at 1641 UTC and fell in the Pacific at 1723 UTC (info from Vladimir Agapov). In response to last week's query, Bart Hendrickx tells me that Soyuz-21 also had problems undocking, back in 1976. Progress M-36 docked with the Kvant module on Mir at 1707 UTC on Oct 8 using the Kurs automatic system. Atlantis is being prepared for return to Palmdale for an Orbiter Maintenance Down Period (OMDP) refurbishment. The next launch is Columbia on mission STS-87.

William Gilbert
In 1600, four hundred years ago William Gilbert, later physician to Queen Elizabeth I of England, published his great study of magnetism, . It gave the first rational explanation to the mysterious ability of the compass needle to point north-south: the Earth itself was magnetic. theatresitting in the balcony if you could afford it, standing in front of the stage if not. However, you might have had to weigh this pleasure against the peril of bubonic plague, which usually spread in the city during summer months.

    • The unexpected connection between sunspot activity and the Earth's magnetism.
    • The extension of magnetism to space around Earth, even to other planets.
