Born: April 30, 1777 in Brunswick, Duchy of Brunswick (now Germany)
Died: February 23, 1855 in Gottingen, Hanover (now Germany) Gauss returned to Brunswick where he received a degree in 1799. After the Duke of Brunswick had agreed to continue Gauss's stipend, he requested that Gauss submit a doctoral dissertation to the University of Helmstedt. He already knew Pfaff, who was chosen to be his advisor. Gauss's dissertation was a discussion of the fundamental theorem of algebra. With his stipend to support him, Gauss did not need to find a job so devoted himself to research. He published the book Disquisitiones Arithmeticae in the summer of 1801. There were seven sections, all but the last section, referred to above, being devoted to number theory. In June 1801, Zach, an astronomer whom Gauss had come to know two or three years previously, published the orbital positions of Ceres, a new "small planet" which was discovered by G Piazzi, an Italian astronomer on 1 January, 1801. Unfortunately, Piazzi had only been able to observe 9 degrees of its orbit before it disappeared behind the Sun. Zach published several predictions of its position, including one by Gauss which differed greatly from the others. When Ceres was rediscovered by Zach on 7 December 1801 it was almost exactly where Gauss had predicted. Although he did not disclose his methods at the time, Gauss had used his least squares approximation method.

Gauss was extremely careful and rigorous in all his work, insisting on a complete proof of any result before he would publish it. As a consequence, he made many discoveries that were not credited to him and had to be remade by others later; for example, he anticipated Bolyai and Lobachevsky in non-Euclidean geometry, Jacobi in the double periodicity of elliptic functions, Cauchy in the theory of functions of a complex variable, and Hamilton in quaternions. However, his published works were enough to establish his reputation as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. Gauss early discovered the law of quadratic reciprocity and, independently of Legendre, the method of least squares. He showed that a regular polygon of n sides can be constructed using only compass and straight edge only if n is of the form 2 p q r q r In 1801, following the discovery of the asteroid Ceres by Piazzi, Gauss calculated its orbit on the basis of very few accurate observations, and it was rediscovered the following year in the precise location he had predicted for it. He tested his method again successfully on the orbits of other asteroids discovered over the next few years and finally presented in his

Carl Friedrich Gauss
Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss (Gauß) April 30 February 23 ) was a German mathematician astronomer and physicist with a very wide range of contributions; he is considered to be one of the leading mathematicians of all time. (His name rhymes with "house", and the proper German spelling uses the instead of the double s.)
Biography
Early years
Gauss was born in Braunschweig , Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg (now part of Germany ) as only son of lower-class uneducated parents. According to legend, while in elementary school , his teacher tried to occupy pupils by making them add up the (whole) numbers from 1 to 100. Shortly thereafter, to the astonishment of all, the young Gauss produced the correct answer, having realized that pairwise addition of terms from opposite ends of the list yielded identical intermediate sums: 1+100=101, 2+99=101, 3+98=101, etc., for a total sum of 50 × 101 = 5050. Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss The modular arithmetic has been used in some cryptography. Beside modular arithmetic, Gauss made many other important discoveries in several mathematical areas such as Number Theory, Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, Complex Numbers, and the theory of functions to name a few. Gauss wrote a book called the Disquisitiones Arithmeticae , which means "Higher Arithmetic", in the summer of 1801. He wrote the book when he was 24 years old! Gauss also published an article about "Differential Geometry". He published many other papers on the subject. Gauss' fame as an extraordinary mathematician was know throughout Europe. He lived a simple life and spent most of his time pursing fields and studies that interested him. Deutsche Post (The German Post Office) had a stamp issued for Gauss on February 23, 1955. It was issued 100 years after he died. Munich (The post office in Germany) again had a stamp issued in for Gauss on April 1977. The stamp was issued for his 200 th birthday anniversary. There were also other stamps issued for Gauss by people. Want to learn how to add numbers quickly?

The Gauss Prize is awarded jointly by the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (DMV = German Mathematical Union) and the International Mathematical Union (IMU), and administered by the DMV. The prize consists of a medal and a monetary award. The source of the prize is a surplus from the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM '98) held in Berlin. With the Gauss Prize the IMU is broadening the range of its awards, now including the influence of mathematics to other disciplines. The award ceremony will include an overview of the achievements of the prize-winner. The presentation of the mathematical work will be addressed to the general public as well as journalists, so that all may appreciate the importance of mathematics for everyday life.

Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss
Fins do século XVIII. Ora, 50 X 101 é igual a 5 050.

Gauss worked in a wide variety of fields in both mathematics and physics incuding number theory, analysis, differential geometry, geodesy, magnetism, astronomy and optics. His work has had an immense influence in many areas. A child prodigy, Gauss taught himself to read and to count by the age of three. Recognising Gauss's talent, the Duke of Brunswick in 1792 provided him with money to allow him to pursue his education. He attended Caroline College from 1792 to 1795 and a t this time Gauss formulated the least-squares method and a conjecture on the distribution of primes. This conjecture was proved by Jacques Hadamard in 1896. Gauss developed the concept of complex numbers and in 1799 the University of Helmstedt granted Gauss a Ph.D. for a dissertation that gave the first proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra. In his dissertation Gauss severly criticized Legendre, Lapla ce and other major mathematicians of the day for their lack of rigour.
