1. Historical Background and Gassendi's Life
fonctionnaire After some years of instructing pupils in philosophy and theology, Gassendi distanced himself from what he believed to be rigid teachings of the Scholastics in his Exercitationes Paradoxicae Meditations into the Objections and Replies (Gassendi subsequently published his rebuttals in his Disquistio Metaphysica of 1646) and focused Gassendi's attention on refuting the mystical attacks on Kepler by Robert Fludd ( Epistolica Exercitatio, in qua principia philosophiae Roberti Fluddi medici reteguntur

Pierre Gassendi
French physicist and philosopher, who promoted an atomic theory of matter. As for flesh, true, indeed, is it that man is sustained on flesh. But how many things, let me ask, does man do every day which are contrary to, or beside, his nature? So great, and so general, is the perversion of his mode of life, which has, as it were, eaten into his flesh by a sort of deadly contagion, that he appears to have put on another disposition. Hence, the whole care and concern of philosophy and moral instruction ought to consist in leading men back to the paths of Nature. Man lives very well upon flesh, you say, but, if he thinks this food to be natural to him, why does he not use it as it is, as furnished to him by Nature? But, in fact, be shrinks in horror from seizing and rending living or even raw flesh with his teeth, and lights a fire to change its natural and proper condition . . . What is clearer than that man is not furnished for hunting, much less for eating, other animals? In one word, we seem to be admirably admonished by Cicero that man was destined for other things than for seizing and cutting the throats of other animals. If you answer, "that may be said to be an industry ordered by Nature, by which such weapons are invented," then, behold, it is by the very same artificial instrument that men make weapons for mutual slaughter. Do they this at the instigation of Nature? Can a use so noxious be called natural? Faculty is given by Nature, but it is our own fault that we make a perverse use of it.

INTRODUCTION Gassendi, Pierre (1592-1655), French philosopher and savant, born in Champtercier, near Digne, and educated at Digne and at the universities of Aix-en-Provence and Avignon. GASSENDI'S LIFE In 1617 he was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Aix-en-Provence. During the next years he taught, traveled to Flanders and Holland, and worked on studies in science and philosophy. In 1634 he was appointed provost of the cathedral at Digne, and in 1645 he became professor of mathematics at the Collège Royal in Paris. He retired in 1648. As a philosopher he first became known through his attacks on the theories of Aristotle; he also participated in a controversy with the French philosopher René Descartes over the nature of matter. GASSENDI'S WORK In 1647 his De vita et Moribus Epicuri (On the Life and Character of Epicurus) was published, followed two years later by two more works on the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus. Gassendi's theories are considered to have prepared the way for modern empirical methods, anticipating those of the English philosopher John Locke and the French philosopher Étienne Bonnot de Condillac; he was chiefly responsible for reviving interest in the philosophy of Epicureanism in modern times. His scientific work was mainly in the fields of astronomy and cartography.

Pierre Gassendi (1592-1655)
There are three strands of Gassendi's philosophy which are quite notable. First, he was responsible for making atomism respectable in European intellectual circles of the 17th century. Atomism derived from Greek philosophers, was transmitted and modified by Lucretius and Epicurus. In the Epicurean form atomism was incompatible with Christianity. Gassenid made atomism respectable by modifying it so that it did not conflict with Christianity. Thus, instead of insisting on the eternity of atoms, Gassendi has God create the atoms. Connected with his efforts to make atomism respectable was his rejection of Aristotelianism. There was, from the Renaissance on, a revolt against Aristotelian philosophy. Many of the philosophers of the 17th century were part of this revolt. Aristotle had rejected atomism, and this gives Gassendi some reason to reject Aristotle. The conection between Aristotle and the Scholastic philosophy of the Middle Ages, which still dominated the universities in Gassendi's time, provided another reason for philosophers opposed to Scholasticism to reject Aristotelian philosophy. The third feature of Gassendi's philosophy is that he advocated a moderate skepticism. This moderate skepticism influenced philosophy perhaps more profoundly than Descartes' attempts to refute skepticism entirely.
