Galton is best remembered as the founder of eugenics, based on his research into heredity, a subject brought to his notice by his reading of his cousin's Origin of Species .He himself had created the word eugenics, based on the greek roots for 'beauttiful' and 'heredity'. His scientific reseach also covered less controversial fields; his Meteorographica laid the foundations of weather forecasting, and he coined the term "anticyclone".

London MacMillan and Co. 1884 4to., [iv], 64, [4] pp., With tipped-in leaf, "Fly-Leaf to Record of Family Faculties." A good copy in the original brick-coloured cloth, with black rule and lettering on front and back covers; spine worn. cloth lightly bubbled First edition. This study was devised to gather statistical data for the author's ongoing research in eugenics. The notebook, with its numerous detailed forms and questionnaires, was designed to trace and record personal information concerning inherited family characteristics. Galton's interest was to forecast the mental and bodily faculties of children, and to further the science of heredity. The inserted flyleaf offers £500 in prizes to those who return the forms before May 15, 1884.Galton (1822-1911), is described as the "statistician of Eugenics" and originator of empirical research in medical genetics. His contributions were many, but these investigations required greater knowledge of the fundamentals of statistics, and it remained for others, primarily Karl Pearson, to complete the development of his ideas. Francis Galton
From A Life of Sir Francis Galton by Nicholas Wright Gillham
Character and ability are inherited. That was Francis Galton's conviction, one that served him well, given his own impressive pedigree. When reading Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species , Galton claimed that he "devoured its contents and assimilated them as fast as they were devoured, a fact which may be ascribed to an hereditary bent of mind that both its illustrious author and myself have inherited from our common grandfather, Dr. Erasmus Darwin." In fact, Charles Darwin may have found some of his cousin's ideas a little embarrassing. A man of means, Galton studied at Cambridge, then began traveling. After wandering about without much purpose for several years, he sharpened his ambition and began an expedition to Africa, assimilating a wealth of knowledge about the landscape. Yet his opinions of some of its inhabitants were shocking. Once, while I watched a [member of the Damara tribe in Southern Africa] floundering hopelessly in a calculation on one side of me, I observed Dinah, my spaniel, equally embarrassed on the other. She was overlooking half a dozen of her new-born puppies, which had been removed two or three times from her, and her anxiety was excessive. . . . She evidently had a vague notion of counting, but the figure was too large for her brain. Taking the two as they stood, dog and Damara, the comparison reflected no great honour on the man. On the other hand, when Galton later heard of a violent dispute between European travelers and a neighboring African tribe, he sympathized with the Africans, thinking the Europeans should have remembered they were guests in someone else's country.

Born in Birmingham, England, educated in Boulogne, Kenilworth and King Edward's School, Birmingham; trained in medicine at Birmingham General Hospital and Kings College London until 1840; B. A. Trinity College, Cambridge. A generous inheritance allowed him to devote his life to travel, and to the study of a succession of virtually unexplored fields: the weather; physical and mental characteristics in man and animals; the influence of heredity on them; heredity in twins; fingerprints and personal identification. His study of "those agencies under social control that may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations, either physically or mentally" led him to invent the work "eugenics" to describe his work. He founded the Galton Laboratory of National Eugenics at University College London (later renamed Galton Laboratory, Department of Human Genetics and Biometry) to further his work.

SIR FRANCIS GALTON (1822-1911) An English scientist, explorer and anthropologist, Francis Galton was a cousin of Charles Darwin and was one of the first to recognize how Darwin's theory of evolution was going to clash with theology. He coined the word eugenics to denote scientific endeavors to increase the proportion of persons with better than average genes. This was to be done through selective mating of marriage partners. Galton as a youth developed a passion for travel. He was taking medicine but when his father died he was left with sufficient fortune that he was free to indulge in his craving for travel. He wrote nine books and over 200 papers. They deal with many diverse subjects, including the use of fingerprints for personal identification, the correlation of calculus (a branch of applied statistics) - in both of which Galton was a pioneer - twins, blood transfusions, the art of travel in undeveloped countries, criminality and meteorology. He was also deeply concerned with improving standards of measurement. He was knighted in 1909 and died near London on January 17, 1911.
