French mathematician who developed new techniques to study the solubility of equations which are now called group theory Simultaneously with Abel , he showed that the general quintic equation and polynomial equations of higher degree are not soluble in terms of a finite number of rational operations and root extractions. Galois's life was a tragic one. His father committed suicide. Galois himself regularly failed his exams in school while he concentrated on reading Legendre's Geometry cover to cover. In his examination to the Preparatory School in 1830, the physics teacher Péclet wrote of the young genius "He knows absolutely nothing. I have been told that this student has mathematical ability; this certainly astonishes me. Judging by his examination, he seems of little intelligence, or has hidden his intelligence so well that I found it impossible to detect it" (Infeld 1948, pp. 101-102). Galois also failed to gain admittance to the École Polytechnique not once, but two times. During the first of these examinations, in 1829, Galois was so frustrated by the inane questions that he vented his anger by throwing an eraser at his examiner M. Dinet (Infeld 1948, pp. 99-100). Galois suffered the additional misfortune of having his work not only ignored, but completely misplaced by its caretakers on several occasions. When Galois gave

Galois, Évariste (1811-1832)
A French mathematician who led a short, dramatic life and is often credited with founding modern group theory, though the Italian Paolo Ruffini (1765-1822) came up with many of the ideas first. Galois' work wasn't widely acknowledged by his contemporaries, partly because he didn't present his material very well and partly because he held unpopular political views. In fact, he was a republican revolutionary who was twice imprisoned because of his activities. During his second incarceration he fell in love with the daughter of the prison physician, Stephanie-Felice du Motel, and after being released, was killed in a duel over her with Perscheux d'Herbinville. His death started republican riots and rallies which lasted for several days. See also Galois theory and quintic

Evariste Galois
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Galois Galois was young-looking for his age and had black hair. ‰variste Galois October 25 May 31 ) was a French mathematician born in Bourg-la-Reine . He was a mathematical child prodigy . While still in his teens, he was able to determine a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable by radicals , thereby solving a long-standing problem. His work laid the fundamental foundations for Galois theory , a major branch of abstract algebra , and the subfield of Galois connections . He was the first to use the word " group " as a technical term in mathematics to represent a group of permutations . He died in a duel at the age of twenty. In he attempted the entrance exam to ‰cole Polytechnique , without the usual preparation in mathematics, and failed. He failed yet again on the second, final attempt the next year. It is undisputed that Galois was more than qualified; however, accounts differ on why he failed. The legend holds that he thought the exercise proposed to him by the examiner to be of no interest, and, in exasperation, he threw the rag used to clean up chalk marks on the blackboard at the examiner's head. More plausible accounts state that Galois refused to justify his statements and answer the examiner's questions. Galois's behavior was perhaps influenced by the recent suicide of his father.

(from the introduction of I. Stewart, Galois Theory, Chapman and Hall,1992 F or the first twelve years of his life Galois was educated by his mother, who passed on to him a thorough grounding in the classics. His childhood appears to have been a happy one. At the ae of ten he was offered a place at the college of Reims, but his mother preferred to keep him at home. In October 1823 he entered the . During his first term there the students rebelled and refused to chant in chapel, and a hundred of the were expelled. G alois performed well during his first two years at school, obtaining first prize in Latin; but then boredom set in. He was made to repeat the next year's class, but this simply aggravated the tedium. It was during this period that Galois began to take a serious interest in mathematics. He came across a copy of Legendre's , a classic text which broke with the Euclidean tradition of school geometry. It is said (see Bell, 1965), that he read it 'like a novel' and mastered it in one reading. The school algebra texts could not compete with Legendre's masterpiece, and Galois turned instead to the original memoirs of Lagrange and Abel. At the age of fifteen he was reading material written for professional mathematicians. But his classwork remained uninspired; it would seem that he had lost all interest in it. His teachers misunderstood him and accused him of affecting ambition and originality.

I. BIOGRAPHIE
