EVARISTE GALOIS
GALOIS, EVARISTE (1811-1832), French mathematician, was born on the 25th of October 1811, and killed in a duel on the 3ist of May 1832. An obituary notice by his friend Auguste Chevalier appeared in the Revue encyclopedique (1832); and his collected works are published, Journal de Liouville (1846), pp. 381-444, about fifty of t~hese pages being occupied by researches on the resolubility of algebraic equations by radicals. This branch of algebra he notably enriched, and to him is also due the notion ,of a group of substitutions (see EQUATION: Theory of Equations; also GROUPS, THEORY or). His collected works, with an introduction by C. F. Picard, were published in 1897 at Paris. Evariste Galois Galois' short life may have been the most tragic and romantic in the history of mathematics. In contrast to Cauchy , Galois was an ardent republican; he was jailed twice, once for six months, for his radical political views. His major contribution to mathematics is Galois theory which he developed to determine when a polynomial was solvable by radicals (its Galois group is a solvable group); it is ironic that a problem about solving polynomial equations by radicals was solved by a radical. He died at the age of twenty in a duel, and he spent the night before writing a letter to his friend Auguste Chevalier describing his mathematical results and urging Chevalier to see that they received their proper recognition. A number of times in the letter Galois wrote, "I have no time" as though he were a student running short of time on an exam, definitely a final exam. Galois' revolutionary work was very difficult to understand, due to the novelty of its ideas, the complexity of the arguments, and a lack of clarity in its exposition. The results were not published until 1846 when they were edited by Liouville and placed in the Journal de Mathematique Pures et Appliquees;

    Encyclopedia: Evariste Galois
    Updated 7 days 13 hours 25 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Evariste Galois Galois was young-looking for his age and had black hair. ‰variste Galois October 25 May 31 ) was a French mathematician born in Bourg-la-Reine . He was a mathematical child prodigy . While still in his teens, he was able to determine a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable by radicals , thereby solving a long-standing problem. His work laid the fundamental foundations for Galois theory , a major branch of abstract algebra , and the subfield of Galois connections . He was the first to use the word " group " as a technical term in mathematics to represent a group of permutations . He died in a duel at the age of twenty.

Bourg-la-Reine, France, October 25, 1811, d. Paris, May 31, 1832] Galois died young with almost none of his work published or even read during his lifetime. In 1846 his papers and a letter describing his main discovery were edited and published. His main discovery was that equations of degree 5 or higher cannot be solved using the ordinary tools of algebra. But the method he used to reach the conclusion was more influential than the theorem. The method, group theory, has been at the core of mathematical thought for the past century and a half. Encyclopedia Galois, ‰variste āv¤rēst g¤lw¤ ) , 1811–32, French mathematician. At the age of 17 he had evolved original concepts on the theory of algebra. He made important contributions to the theory of equations, the theory of numbers, and the theory of functions and was a pioneer in establishing the theory of groups in algebraic substitutions. Galois was twice imprisoned for his republican sympathies. He was killed in a duel with a political opponent. Bibliography See I. Stewart
