Genius and Biographers: The Fictionalization of Evariste Galois
1. Introduction
In Paris, on the obscure morning of May 30, 1832, near a pond not far from the pension Sieur Faultrier, Evariste Galois confronted an adversary in a duel to be fought with pistols, and was shot through the stomach. Hours later, lying wounded and alone, Galois was found by a passing peasant. He was taken to the Hospital Cochin where he died the following day in the arms of his brother Alfred, after having refused the services of a priest. Had Galois lived another five months, until October 25, he would have attained the age of twenty-one. The legend of Evariste Galois, one of the creators of group theory, has fired the imagination of generations of mathematics students. Many of us have experienced the excitement of Freeman Dyson who writes: In those days, my head was full of the romantic prose of E.T. Bell's Men of Mathematics , a collection of biographies of the great mathematicians. This is a splendid book for a young boy to read (unfortunately, there is not much in it to inspire a girl, with Sonya Kovalevsky allotted only half a chapter), and it has awakened many people of my generation to the beauties of mathematics. The most memorable chapter is called "Genius and Stupidity" and describes the life and death of the French mathematician Galois, who was killed in a duel at the age of twenty.[1] Dyson goes on to quote Bell's famous description of Galois's last night before the duel:
All night long he had spent the fleeting hours feverishly dashing off his scientific last will and testament, writing against time to glean a few of the great things in his teeming mind before the death he saw could overtake him. Time after time he broke off to scribble in the margin "I have not time; I have not time," and passed on to the next frantically scrawled outline. What he wrote in those last desperate hours before the dawn will keep generations of mathematicians busy for hundreds of years. He had found, once and for all, the true solution of a riddle which had tormented mathematicians for centuries: underwhat conditions can an equation be solved?[2]

EVARISTE GALOIS by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1475. Today, let's tell the remarkable tale of Evariste Galois. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. E variste Galois was the father of modern algebra. He was born in France in 1811, and died of gunshot wounds twenty years and seven months later. He was still a minor when his brief, turbulent life ended. Galois began his career in math by failing the entry exam twice because his answers were so odd. He was accepted into the , only to be expelled when he attacked the director in a letter to the papers. A few months later, he was arrested for making a threatening speech against the king. He was acquitted, but then he was right back into jail after he illegally wore a uniform and carried weapons. He spent the next nine months writing mathematics. Then, as soon as he got out, he was devastated by an unhappy love affair. I guess it'd be fair to say he was typical bright young teenager. Still, his talents as a mathematician were known. He did publish some material, and luminaries like Gauss, Jacobi, Fourier, and Cauchy all knew of him.

Evariste Galois
Brief Biography by Bernard Bychan
Text taken from The Evariste Galois Archive
His Childhood
Evariste Galois was born on the 25th of October 1811 in a small place called Bourg-la-Rei ne. This place is situated about 10 kilometres south of Paris. Today, it is a suburb of the Frenc h capital. In his house in the Grande Rue - nowadays called Avenue du Générale Leclerc - the Galoi s family accommodated a school, whose origins can be retraced to the times before the revolution. Prosperity and reputation of the family were based in this school. His father Nicolas-Gabriel Galois his mother Adélaïde Marie Demante were very intelligent and were well trained in all the subjects considered important at that time: classical literature, religio n and philosophy. There is no record of mathematical talent on either side of the family, nor di d Evariste himself show any, but on the other hands there are no hints to the contrary neither. But there is a record of Nicholas-Gabriel Galois gift for composing rhymed couplets. He used it t o amuse family and friends at house parties (maybe elsewhere as well but there is no explicit men tioning of it). It's hard to imagine that his ability proved to be his undoing, years later. Evar iste seemed to have inherited this talent. His cousin Mme. Bénard remembers decades later the fami ly parties with their grandmother, when the children, i.e. Galois, his sister and their cousins r ecited rhymed couplets, which Evariste had composed. At the age of ten his parents decided to send him to a college in Reims. Evariste was admitted to this school with a partial grant. But then his mother seems to have changed her mind. She regard ed her son as too small and defenceless to be sent off so far from home. He was allowed to stay h ome, enjoy the quiet family live and she kept on being his (as well as his sister's and brother's ) sole source of education. He received an excellent education in Latin, Greek and rhetoric, and it is mentioned, that she passed on her own skepticism for religious matters, but mathematics is not mentioned.

Life and Times
At 16, Galois took the examinations to enter the prestigious Poly technique and failed. Years later Terquem remarked, "A candidate of superior intelligence is lost with an examiner of inferior intelligence." However, Galois found a mathematics teacher, Louis Richard, and really started studying and doing mathematics. His first paper, on continued fractions, was published when he was 17. At 18, Galois reapplied to the Poly technique, and again the examination went badly. Finally, during the oral part of the exam, he lost patience with one of the examiners and threw the eraser at him. It was a hit, but Galois could never apply there again. At 19, Galois attended the university and wrote three original papers on the theory of algebraic equations. He submitted them to the Academy of Sciences for the competition in mathematics. The Secretary of the Academy took them home to read, but then died before writing a report about them and the papers were never found. Galois was understandably upset: "Genius is condemned by a malicious social organization to an eternal denial of justice in favor of fawning mediocrity." In 1830 the French masses revolted, and Galois was a staunch supporter. The director of the school locked the students in the school during the fighting and then expelled Galois for a public letter he wrote condemning the director. Galois tried to start his own school of mathematics, but got no students, so he joined the National Guard "If a carcass is needed to stir up the people, I will donate mine." Galois was jailed for supposedly threatening the King, but was found 'not guilty' by a jury. Finally he was convicted and sentenced to 6 months in jail for "illegally wearing a uniform."

Appeared in: Lecture 7 Euclid's greatest accomplishment was the Elements , his 13-chapter book outlining everything he knew about geometry. He based all of his geometrical theorems on just five postulates, making the work very rigorous and complete, but for two millenia mathematicians wondered if the fifth postulate (the so-called "Parallel Postulate") could in fact be derived from the other four. This was finally answered (in the negative) by Lobachevsky, Bolyai, and Gauss, leading to the branch of mathematics we now call Non-Euclidean Geometry More...
