Galileo Galilei
15 Feb. 1564, Pisa - 8 Jan. 1642 in Arcetri (near Florence) Galileo Galilei 's father, Vincenzo Galilei (c.1520 - 1591), who described himself as a nobleman of Florence, was a professional musician. He carried out experiments on strings to support his musical theories. Galileo studied medicine at the university of Pisa, but his real interests were always in mathematics and natural philosophy. He is chiefly remembered for his work on free fall, his use of the telescope and his employment of experimentation. After a spell teaching mathematics, first privately in Florence and then at the university of Pisa, in 1592 Galileo was appointed professor of mathematics at the university of Padua (the university of the Republic of Venice). There his duties were mainly to teach Euclid 's geometry and standard (geocentric) astronomy to medical students, who would need to know some astronomy in order to make use of astrology in their medical practice. However, Galileo apparently discussed more unconventional forms of astronomy and natural philosophy in a public lecture he gave in connection with the appearance of a New Star (now known as ' Kepler 's supernova') in 1604. Galileo Galilei
Galileo is one of the most famous scientists ever, both for his groundbreaking discoveries and his willingness to stand by his theories in opposition to conventional thought. His persecution by the Catholic church is one of the more celebrated cases of extreme conservatism in history. Less is known about Galileo himself, however. He had a background in art, often drawing and painting. This training helped him realize what he was observing in the heavens. Specifically, his understanding of chiarascuro (the use of shading to indicate depth) led him to realize that the forms he observed on the moon were craters and mountains. In short, he realized that the moon had a texture, in contradiction to the concept of the moon as perfect in its smoothness. Without his training in the arts, he would not have been able to make this discovery. Inside Links Outside Links Return to the Architectonic

    Portrait of Galileo Galilei
Courtesy of Ottavio Leoni, Reunion des Musees Nationaux Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer and physicist who lived between 1564-1642. He challenged Aristotle's ancient proposition that heavenly bodies were divine and therefore perfect and blemish-free. In 1609, Galileo became first person to use a telescope to look at the heavens. He discovered sunspots, and craters and peaks in Earth's moon The telescope also allowed Galileo to confirm the work of Copernicus in that the planets circle the Sun (as opposed to all heavenly bodies circling the Earth ). Galileo's work offended the Roman Catholic Church and he was convicted of heresy in 1616 by the Inquisition. It wasn't until 1992 that Pope John Paul II announced that the Catholic Church erred in condemning Galileo's beliefs. Sentenced to house arrest for the later years of his life, Galileo is remembered as a martyr for scientific truth.

    Galileo Galilei
    A Little Background
Before we start talking about Galileo Galilei, we need to understand a little about the era he lived in, and its view of the Universe. Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher who lived in the 4th century B.C., said that the Earth was the center of the universe. Everything elsethe moon, the Sun, the planets and the starsmoved around the Earth. For hundreds of years, no one questioned this idea, especially when the Roman Catholic Church said that Aristotle was right. Finally, in 1543, someone DID question the Church's teachings. A Polish astronomer named Nicholas Copernicus said that the Sun was the center of the Universe, and that everything, including the Earth, went around the Sun. If Copernicus was right, the Church was wrong. The Church, in response, denounced the Copernican system. And now, our story opens......
    The Early Years
Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15, 1564, 21 years after the death of Copernicus and three days before the death of Michelangelo. He was the first of 7 children. Although Galileo's father was a musician and wool trader, he wanted his clearly talented son to study medicine as there was more money in medicine (some things don't change, even over 400 years!). So, at age eleven, Galileo was sent off to study in a Jesuit monastery. After four years, Galileo had decided on his life's work: he announced to his father that he wanted to be.....a monk. This was not exactly what father had in mind for his gifted son, so Galileo was hastily withdrawn from the monastery. In 1581, at the age of 17, Galileo entered the University of Pisa to study medicine, as his father wished.
