Galilei, Galileo
GALILEO GALILEI: CIÈNCIA, MÈTODE I FE.

His achievements include improving the telescope , a variety of astronomical observations, the first law of motion , and supporting Copernicanism effectively. He has been referred to as the "father of modern astronomy ," as the "father of modern physics ," and as "father of science ." His experimental work is widely considered complementary to the writings of Francis Bacon in establishing the modern scientific method . Galileo's career coincided with that of Johannes Kepler . The work of Galileo is considered to be a significant break from that of Aristotle . In addition, his conflict with the

Italian scientist and philosopher. Galileo was a true Renaissance man, excelling at many different endeavors, including lute playing and painting. He attended medical school in Padua. While in a cathedral, he noticed that a chandelier was swinging with the same period as timed by his pulse, regardless of its amplitude. He began to study the isochronism of the pendulum in 1581, as well as the motion of bodies. Using an inclined plane, he showed that all bodies fall at the same rate. He also investigated cohesion and concluded that a waterfall breaks when the weight of the water becomes too great, the same reason that water pumps could only raise water by 34 feet. Galileo described his views on dynamics and statics in Dialog on the Two New Sciences, which emphasized mathematics over rhetorical arguments. Galileo was one of the earliest to propose abstract dynamical theories which were ideal and would not be observed under less than ideal circumstances. Galileo observed the supernova of 1604 and tried unsuccessfully to measure its parallax. According to

Galileo Galilei Galileo Galilei was a great scientistbut much more than that. Had he been content to stick to his scienceand limited his writing to dull treatises for other specialistshe would never have incurred the condemnation of the Catholic Church. Galileo had a mission: he wanted to increase awareness of scientific thought and, in the process, rescue the Catholic Church from its ostrich-like refusal to see the cosmos as it really was. Galileo was born in Pisa in 1564the same year Shakespeare was born and Michelangelo died. In the 1570s, Galileo and his family moved to Florence. In 1581, he entered the University of Pisa, as student of medicine and philosophy. At Pisa, Galileo undertook a study of the pendulum that would much later result in the development of the pendulum clock. In 1592, Galileo was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Padua. In that position, Galileo pursued interests in the motion of falling bodies, spherical geometry, nautical engineering, and astronomy. During this period Galileo also came to accept the view of Copernicus, first developed in his treatise on the Revolutions of the Celestrial Orbs , that the Earth, rotating once a day on its own axis, revolved around the Sun.
