R. Buckminster Fuller
"For the first time in history it is now possible to take care of everybody at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. Only ten years agao the 'more with less' technology reached the point where this could be done. All humanity now has the option of becoming enduringly successful." - Buckminster Fuller, 1980. R. Buckminster Fuller, known by his friends as "Bucky", has undeniably been one of the key innovators in the 20th century. He is known as a philosopher, thinker, visionary, inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician, poet, cosmologist, and more. Buckminster Fuller was probably one of the first futurists and global thinkers. He is the one who coined the term "Spaceship Earth", and his work has inspired and paved the way for many who came after him. This is the Dymaxion Map of the world, developed by Fuller as the first world projection to show the continents on a flat surface without visible distortion. Furthermore, this view shows the earth as being essentially one island in one ocean. Bucky was the person most responsible for making Synergy a common term. Much of his work was about exploring and creating synergy. He found synergy to be a basic principle of all interactive systems. He developed a subject called Synergetics, a "Geometry of Thinking".

"Making the world's available resources serve one hundred percent of an exploding population can only be accomplished by a boldly accelerated design revolution." T here are few men who can justly claim to have revolutionized their discipline. R. Buckminster Fuller revolutionized many. "Bucky," as he was known to most, was a designer, architect, poet, educator, engineer, philosopher, environmentalist, and, above all, humanitarian. Driven by the belief that humanity's major problems were hunger and homelessness he dedicated his life to solving those problems through inexpensive and efficient design. Black Mountain College . There, with the support of an amazing group of professors and students, he began work on the project that was to make him famous and revolutionize the field of engineering. Using lightweight plastics in the simple form of a tetrahedron (a triangular pyramid) he created a small dome. As his work continued it became clear that he had made the first building that could sustain its own weight with no practical limits. The U.S. government recognized the importance of the discovery and employed him to make small domes for the army. Within a few years there were thousands of these domes around the world. Having finally received recognition for his endeavors, Buckminster Fuller spent the final fifteen years of his life traveling around the world lecturing on ways to better use the world's resources. A favorite of the radical youth of the late 60's and 70's, Fuller worked to expand social activism to an international scope. Among his most famous books were NO MORE SECONDHAND GOD(1963) OPERATING MANUAL FOR THE SPACESHIP EARTH (1969), and EARTH, INC. (1973) in which he writes "In reality, the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon are nothing else than a most fantastically well-designed and space-programmed team of vehicles. All of us are, always have been, and so long as we exist, always will benothing else butastronauts."

Today over 300,000 domes dot the globe. Plastic and fiberglass "radomes" house delicate radar equipment along the Arctic perimeter, and “radome” weather stations withstand winds up to 180 mph. Corrugated metal domes have given shelter to families in Africa, at a cost of $350 per dome. The U.S. Marine Corps hailed the geodesic dome as "the first basic improvement in mobile military shelter in 2,600 years." The world’s largest aluminum clear-span structure is a geodesic dome which houses the “ Spruce Goose Fuller was one of the earliest proponents of renewable energy sources–solar (including wind and wave)–which he incorporated into his designs. He claimed, "there is no energy crisis, only a crisis of ignorance." His research demonstrated that humanity could satisfy 100% of its energy needs while phasing out fossil fuels and atomic energy. For example, he showed that a wind generator fitted to every high-voltage transmission tower in the U.S. would generate three-and-a-half times the country’s total recent power output. Our camp's theme for 2005 is "Head Games," which we think fits right in with this year's Art theme. Just to be clear, we don't play head games... we win them! The camp has two main projects:
    The Head Games Dome
It will be decorated like a giant head. Under its cooling shade will be many large-scale games, such as skittle bowl, a giant soma cube, giant versions of hand puzzles, etc. From the center will hang a "ball in maze" puzzle which is a big maze on a suspended table. If participants cooperate in moving the table they can get the ball to travel through the maze. More info...

    The Great Unhot
On very hot days we'll operate the Great Unhot as an impromptu Black Rock City Heat Recycling Station. Participants are invited to recycle their heat for an equal amount of cool, and donate a small amount of water to cool the next two people.
