Harris Hancock
Harris Hancock was a scion of a prominent Virginia horse-breeding family. The family farm in Ellerslie, Virginia, where Hancock was born just after the Civil War, was renown for producing a string of champion thoroughbreds. He was educated at the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University, where he received his A.B. in 1888. This was followed by graduate studies in England at Cambridge University and in Germany at the University of Berlin where he attended lectures by Weierstrass, Frobenius and H.A. Schwarz. He obtained a Berlin Ph.D. in 1894 for a thesis on elliptic functions directed by Lazarus Fuchs. A second dissertation on algebraic number theory, directed by Gaston Darboux, earned him a D.Sc. degree from the Sorbonne in 1901. Hancock was hired as an Associate at the University of Chicago in 1892, where Cincinnatian Eliakem Hastings Moore was Head of the Mathematics Department. Moore and Hancock had a falling out when Moore (see [KP]) "... refused to promote Hancock at the rate the young man believed he merited. In response to this, Hancock kept up a steady correspondence to [President William Rainey] Harper over the five-year period from 1895 to 1900, in which he extolled his own virtues, asked for promotions, and denounced Moore's treatment of him." Hancock left the University of Chicago in 1900 and was appointed Professor at the University of Cincinnati. He published a number of important books during his thirty eight year career at the University of Cincinnati and was a strong proponent of classical education (and a fierce opponent of the College of Education). Hancock headed a committee of Cincinnati citizens who lobbied for a rigorous, classically-based high school education. The work of this group led directly to the founding of Walnut Hills High School in 1920. He attended the First Annual Meeting of the MAA Ohio Section in 1916 and served as Section Chairman, 1924-25.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. The state of American mathematics in the year 1890 was quite bleak. Only two schools offered true graduate education, The Johns Hopkins University and Clark University. Both were new, Hopkins having been founded in 1876 and Clark in 1889. When compared to their counterparts in Europe, the courses taught at the vast majority of American universities were paltry, the spirit of research almost nonexistent, and the quality of the faculty vastly inferior. Most established universities and colleges in America emphasized a classical education that featured rhetoric and classical languages to the exclusion of the sciences. By 1950, just 60 years later, a dramatic revolution had completely altered the mathematical landscape. American students could now obtain an excellent grounding at dozens of first-rate institutions before pursuing doctoral degrees at several world-class departments led by an international cast of outstanding researchers.

Excursions into Mathematics : The Millenium Edition
Since it was first published three decades ago, Excursions Into Mathematics has been one of the most
popular mathematical books written for a general audience. Taking the reader for short Excursions
into several specific disciplines of mathematics, it makes mathematical concepts accessible to a wide
audience. The Millennium Edition is updated with current research and new solutions to outstanding
problems that have been discovered since the last edition was printed, such as the solution to the
well-known “four-color problem.EExcursions Into Mathematics: The Millennium Edition is an exciting
revision of the original, much-loved classic. Everyone with an interest in mathematics should read this
book.

UVa (11-2, 3-1 ACC) controlled 16 of the 23, with 12 different Cavaliers notching at least one as Nikki Lieb controlled three, including the first two of the second half. Ashley Dodson had three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Elizabeth Pinney scooped up a game-high four ground balls. Amy Appelt led the Virginia offense with three goals and two assists, while Tyler Leachman also had a hat trick. The Virginia defense was on early and kept the Hokies of the scoreboard for the first 19:13. The Hokies won the opening draw but a Dodson caused turnover and Meredith Lazarus ground ball in the Virginia defensive arc brought the ball up to the UVa offensive zone. A wide shot was picked up by the Hokies, but on the attempted clear Leachman picked up an errant pass and got the ball to Appelt, who rolled the crease and scored 3:42 into the game. Again it was a Dodson caused turnover that led to the next goal as the Cavaliers gained possession in their arc and cleared the ball to the other end where Appelt drove from the top and scored nine minutes after her first goal to put Virginia on top 2-0.

Students, Colleagues, and Friends
On 31 October 1885 Karl Weierstrass celebrated his 70th birthday. On this occasion, his students, colleagues, and friends presented him a photo album to express their thanks and congratulations. Many of them had studied in Berlin or, after having finished their studies, came to Berlin to attend lectures by Weierstrass or his colleagues Ernst Kummer and Leopold Kronecker at the Friedrich Wilhelm University. It was thanks to these scientists that Berlin could take an outstanding position in mathematics in the second half of the 19th century. Among these were Carl Runge, Georg Cantor, Charles Hermite, Hermann Amandus Schwarz, Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya, Goesta Mittag-Leffler, and Lazarus Fuchs.

The Variation of the Adiabatic Elastic Constants of KCl, NaCl, CuZn, Cu, and Al with Pressure to 10,000 Bars
David Lazarus
Department of Physics, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois
Received 4 April 1949 The adiabatic velocities of sound for longitudinal and transverse waves in single crystal specimens of five cubic solids have been measured as a function of pressure to 10,000 bars, using a pulse technique. The elastic constants calculated from these data in general agree well with previous measurements obtained for zero pressure elastic constants and compressibilities. With increasing pressure the anisotropy increases in crystals which are not closest-packed, but decreases in closest-packed structures. Consideration of the exchange force between nearest neighbors gives a qualitative explanation for this effect. Comparison of the present measurements with previous measurements of the variation of elastic constants with temperature indicates that the elastic moduli cannot be considered functions of volume alone but must also depend explicitly on the temperature.
