AND ST. JAKOBSKIRCHE
After working in the chapel for a few days, Ernst Fuchs suddenly announced that we would all be going to Vienna. Along the way, we stopped in Barnbach to see the Moses Fountain which he had designed and built.
Then, at break-neck speed, we were off to Thal to see the church of St. Jacob, which he had also designed and built. Its design was inspired while he was in Israel, standing on the shores of Lake Gennesaret. This, it is to be remembered, is the lake where Christ first made James and Jacob 'fishers of men'. The design was inspired by the waves of the lake, and the whole church forms a kind of boat. Ernst Fuchs and I discussed the idea of the church as a boat - a vehicle for traversing the sea, metaphorical of the spiritual realm.
Then, we all slept in his villa in Vienna for a few nights, before returning to Klagenfurt, and a few weeks of intensive work on the Apocalypse Chapel.

It is a bi-monthly news magazine designed for the practicing engineer or technician. Experimental Techniques is devoted to relatively brief and informal "how-to-do-it" or "how-not-to-do-it" articles, emphasizing experimental, analytical and computational techniques and methods. Experimental Techniques is designed for the practicing engineer or technician who must find ingenious means to collect testing and measurement data. To address the needs of the readership, new features and departments will be regularly updated. Some of what is being planned are, field testing, data acquisitions, new/young engineer training, consortiums "Developing Partnerships", student projects, large structures, lecture demonstrations, experimental techniques used in the classroom, "Where Mechanics Matters": Chemical Physics, Chemical Vapor Deposition, applications of mechanics: emerging fields and more. Experimental Techniques also offers the reader information on the latest commercially available hardware and software. This is accomplished with product and literature releases and book reviews. Such information is vital to keeping current with the field.

SOFIA VASILEVNA KOVALEVSKAIA
BIOGRAPHY Sofia Vasilevna Korvin-Krukovskaia (to be referred to as Kovalevskaia) was born on January 15, 1850, in Moscow. Her father, Vasilli Korvin-Krukovskii, was an officer in the Russian artillery; her mother, Elizaveta Shubert, came from a family of German scholars who had settled in Russia in the previous century. They had three children, of whom Kovalevskaia was the middle child. Kovalevskaia had a more or less typical gentry upbringing, but early in her youth she exhibited a decided preference for, and aptitude in, the natural sciences and mathematics. This bent was encouraged by her father, who allowed her to study algebra and geometry with a tutor, and eventually was even persuaded to hire a mathematician (A. N. Strannoliubskii) to teach her calculus. Under the influence of her elder sister (Anna Korvin-Krukovskaia Jaclard, writer and participant in the Paris Commune of l871), the mathematician Strannoliubskii, and others, Kovalevskaia soon became a staunch supporter of the political, social, and cultural radicalism of the 1860s She found the philosophy of nihilism especially attractive, since it emphasized social revolution, equality of women, and faith in the natural sciences. Moreover, nihilism taught that it was the right and duty of every woman of the intelligentsia and nobility to free herself from "parental tyranny," obtain higher education, and embark on a career of usefulness to society. Kovalevskaia determined to seek higher education abroad, since at that time Russian universities (like those in virtually all of Europe except Switzerland) were closed to women. She decided to contract a so-called fictitious marriage in order to facilitate going abroad, because she was afraid her father would not permit her to leave her family for purposes of obtaining a university degree. (Women in Russia could not leave the country, or live apart from their families within the country, without the written permission of father or husband.)

http://www.mtm.ufsc.br/~azeredo/calculos/Dcalculo/xE/odePoSer/5modulo/series05.h
The Radius of Convergence of Series Solutions
In the last section we looked at one of the easiest examples of a second-order linear homogeneous equation with non-constant coefficients: Airy's Equation
y t y
which is used in physics to model the defraction of light. We found out that
and
form a fundamental system of solutions for Airy's Differential Equation. The natural questions arise, for which values of t these series converge, and for which values of t these series solve the differential equation. The first question could be answered by finding the radius of convergence of the power series, but it turns out that there is an elegant Theorem, due to Lazarus Fuchs (1833-1902), which solves both of these questions simultaneously.
Fuchs's Theorem. Consider the differential equation
y p t y q t y
with initial conditions of the form y y and y y Let r >0. If both p t ) and q t ) have Taylor series, which converge on the interval (- r r ), then the differential equation has a unique power series solution y t ), which also converges on the interval (- r r In other words, the radius of convergence of the series solution is at least as big as the minimum of the radii of convergence of
