INVENTORY OF FAMILY TREASURES RECEIVED OR INHERITED BY WALTER, DAVID, CHRISTOPHER AND MARTIN FRIEDRICHS AND LISKA SNYDER - FROM KURT AND NELLIE FRIEDRICHS AND FROM ELLA BRUELL
The web version includes all documents, paintings and photos but excludes listing of the silver, jewelry, china etc.
Prepared by Christopher Friedrichs Updated August 1996
Updated by Martin Feb 2002
The following inventory lists some of the most important items owned by Kurt and Nellie Friedrichs or by Nellie’s mother Ella Bruell (Didi) which were either given to or inherited by Walter, Liska, David, Christopher and Martin. The main purpose of this list is to provide some record of which of the five siblings received which items. Some of these items were personally given by Didi, Kurt or Nellie during their lifetimes; these items are marked with an asterisk (*). The remainder were distributed among the five siblings in February 1995, a few months after Nellie’s death. This distribution generally followed the sugges-tions and guidelines laid down by Nellie in her letter of January 1987.
It is agreed by all of us that every reasonable effort should be made to keep these items in the family. While normally we would expect to pass the items we have down to our own children or grandchildren, in some cases it may seem more appropriate to pass them on to nieces or nephews.

Student Prizes and Winners (2004 - 2005)
Henning Biermann Award . This award honors the memory of Henning Biermann, a brilliant and much-loved Ph.D. student whose dedication to teaching, mentoring, and service enriched academic and extracurricular life for everyone in the department. The award is made to a Ph.D. student who exemplifies this spirit through outstanding contributions to education or service to the department. The Henning Biermann Award is awarded to Michael Freedman.
Sandra Bleistein Prize . The Sandra Bleistein Prize was established by Dr. Norman Bleistein in memory of his late wife, Sandra, who had been a graduate student at the Courant Institute. Norman Bleistein himself received his Ph.D. at the Courant Institute in 1965, writing his thesis on asymptotic methods for the solution of initial boundary value problems for dispersive hyperbolic equations under Professor Robert Lewis. The prize is given annually for notable achievement by a woman in applied mathematics or computer science. The Sandra Bleistein Prize is awarded to Bing Sun.

Next Ramanuja’s Commentary on the Vedanta Sutras Ramanuja (c.1056-1137) was the founder of Visishtadvaita Vedanta (qualified non-dualism). Vedanta philosophy is based on the teachings of the Upanishads. Visishtadvaita Vedanta teaches that Atman (the individual Self) is part of the unity of Brahman (the universal Self), but that Brahman has other differentiating qualities. This viewpoint is in contrast to Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism), which teaches that Atman is the same as Brahman, and that Brahman is undifferentiated. Ramanuja’s most important writings include his commentary on the Vedanta Sutras (the Sri Bhasya , or "True Commentary"), and his commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita (the Gitabhasya , or "Commentary on the Gita"). His other writings include the Vedartha Samgraha ("Summary of the Meaning of the Veda"), the Vedantasara ("Essence of Vedanta"), and

http://www.martysegal.com/hch5-6.htm
CHAPTER 5 THE TREE OF KNOWLEDGE BACK TO THE PAST'S PRESENT (Somewhere North of Lyon on my way South towards Toulouse.) I'm not getting anywhere. I've been in this smallish Service Station, now, for quite a while. It's like a crammed can of sardines in which i seem to be the only sardine who doesn't leave. I want to leave but everybody is going into Lyon. Nobody is going beyond Lyon. Wow! Am i caught in local traffic? But i know this is the only motorway South to Nice and Avignon, Carcassonne and Toulouse. This Station is busy enough but i think i have come too close to Lyon where the local traffic seems to drown out the long-distance, motorway traffic. Nothing is happenin and i'm getting worried. There must be some further reason for this blockage, but i don't know what. Maybe, something to do with this particular Station? Darkness has begun to settle in and the night is cold and misty. I know I must stay out of such energy-sapping muck. I have cautiously inserted myself into the closed-in atmosphere of this ServiceStation. I don't want to startle anyone, nor violate the manager's ego.

David Isaacson
Professor
Ph.D. New York University
Medical Imaging, Mathematical physics
Professor Isaacson works in two areas: mathematical physics and medical imaging. His work in mathematical physics has centered on the development of methods for approximating energy levels, particle masses, and critical exponents in quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and statistical mechanics.
His work in medical imaging has centered on the development of algorithms and devices for measuring and displaying the electrical state of the interior of a body from measurements made on the body's exterior.
The long term goal of this research is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and cancer. Here is a Ventilation Perfusion Image made by the Act3 Impedance Imaging System Publications: "Singular Perturbations and Asymptotic Eigenvalue Degeneracy," Communications in Pure and Applied Math., Vol. XXIX, 531-551, 1976.
