Der Begriff Virtual Reality is electronic simulations of environments experienced via head-mounted eye goggles and wired clothing enabling the end user to interact in realistic three-dimensional situations. A virtual reality is defined as a real or simulated environment in which a perceiver experiences telepresence. Immersion bezeichnet die objektiv beschreibbaren Möglichkeiten der Technik, die Wahrnehmung des Menschen mit simulierten Stimuli zu versorgen. Immersion erfaßt damit die technologische "Umfassung" des Akteurs und betrifft die technische Perspektive der Definitionsversuche. Wichtig sind z.B. die folgenden technologischen Elemente: Wie schnell werden diese Einwirkungen verarbeitet, besteht eine wahrnehmbare Reaktionspause? Diese technologischen Eigenschaften schaffen nur die Grundlage für das Erleben der virtuellen Umgebung als Wirklichkeit. Eine bestimmte Ausprägung oder Qualität dieser Eigenschaften reicht somit nicht aus, Virtuelle Realität erschöpfend zu definieren. Vielmehr ist die Immersion des Nutzers eine notwendige, aber keine hinreichende Voraussetzung für das Erleben einer virtuellen Realität. Dieses Erleben haben wir als Präsenz bezeichnet. Mit Präsenz verbinden wir subjektive Erfahrungen der Nutzer, die ein "Eintauchen", "Versinken" oder "Drin-Sein" berichten. Es ist sowohl für Akteure als auch für Beobachter ein faszinierendes Erlebnis, in dem sich Grenzen von Wirklichkeit plötzlich zu verschieben scheinen:

FRIEDMANN UNIVERSE I n the early 1920s, Russian physicist and mathematician Alexander Friedmann became the first person to embrace the idea that the equations of Einstein’s general theory of relativity called for a universe in motion. Einstein (and most other scientists, for that matter) believed that the universe was static, and he modified his equations by including a “cosmological constant” to keep it so. Closed Universe: The Big Bang’s momentum is offset by gravity, producing a “Big Crunch.” Friedmann made two simple assumptions about the universe: that when viewed at large enough scales, it appears the same both in every direction and from every location. From these assumptions (called the cosmological principle) and Einstein’s equations, he developed the first model of a universe in motion. The Friedmann universe begins with a Big Bang and continues expanding for untold billions of years—that’s the stage we’re in now. But after a long enough period of time, the mutual gravitational attraction of all the matter slows the expansion to a stop. The universe then starts to fall in on itself, replaying the expansion in reverse.
