Alexander Friedmann:
Die Welt als Raum und Zeit
Portrait

http://www.phys.vt.edu/~jjb/BHU/handouts/cosmos.txt
Some Important Figures in Cosmology Einstein, Albert: German-American physicist who invented General Relativity and introduced the cosmological constant to account for a static universe. (This was before Hubble discovered the expanding universe.) He later regretted the introduction of the cosmological constant as the worst mistake of his career. Friedmann, Alexander: Russian mathematician who found solutions to General Relativity which could be expanding or contracting universes, obviating the need for the cosmological constant. Gamow, George: Russian-American nuclear physicist who championed and popularized the Big Bang model and thought (incorrectly) that it could explain the heavy element abundances as a result of their being created in the early Big Bang; in fact, only helium was made during the Nucleosynthesis Era (see the entry for Hoyle, below). Herschel, Sir William: German-English musician and astronomer whose star counts led him to think the sun was at the center of the Galaxy. Hoyle, Sir Fred: English astronomer who was one of the inventors and the leading champion of the Steady State model. His efforts to disprove Big Bang by showing that the heavy elements were made in stars and couldn't be made in the early universe only lead to improving the Big Bang model. He also gave the derisive name, Big Bang, to Lemaitre's model. Hubble, Edwin: American astronomer who: i) showed that there were distant galaxies beyond the Milky Way; ii) discovered the expansion of the universe; and iii) created the scheme for classifying galaxies according to their shapes as ellipticals, spirals, or irregulars. Kapteyn, Jacobus: Dutch astronomer who used wide-field photographic star counts to essentially reproduce Herschel's incorrect result that we live in the center of a small galaxy. Dust obscuration was the culprit which led to this result. Lemaitre, Georges: Belgian priest and cosmologist who introduced the Big Bang model of cosmology. Penzias, Arno and Wilson, Robert: American astronomers who found the 3 Kelvin cosmic background radiation which disproved the Steady State model and lent important support to the Big Bang model. Shapley, Harlow: American astronomer who, by measuring the distribution of globular clusters, found the correct size of the Galaxy and location of the sun. He later argued for the non-existence of other galaxies but then recanted in light of Hubble's work.

The Shape of the Cosmos
Alejandro Gangui How the Universe Got Its Spots: Diary of a Finite Time in a Finite Space . Janna Levin. x + 208 pp. Princeton University Press, 2002. $22.95. Many of us enjoy the night sky. We like to stay outdoors and call the planets, stars and constellations by their names. After half an hour in the darkness, new stars pop up to our eyes. These bright dots multiply by thousands with the aid of even a small pair of binoculars, and looked at through a professional telescope, each tiny patch of night sky unfolds in a myriad of marvelous galaxies. Will the stars continue forever? Some may say, Of course! But then, the universe, is it infinite? At that point, we might like to stop and think twice. . . . No infinity has ever been observed around us. Is it that nature abhors infinity?

Artificial chromosomes and in vitro screening are giving new life to the eugenics debate. The question is not whether we want to engineer embryos but how far it should go.
By Brian Alexander You'll hear the debate on Crossfire or NewsHour or perhaps The 700 Club. Two new books are framing the debate. In Our Posthuman Future, heavyweight social and political theorist Francis Fukuyama warns of "class war" and the eventual obliteration of what it means to be human - all as a direct consequence of genetic fiddling. It comes out April 10. The very next day, Gregory Stock's Redesigning Humans will hit stores. Stock, director of the UCLA School of Medicine's Program on Medicine, Technology, and Society, celebrates the promise of genetic engineering: longer lifespans, better health, smarter kids. On Wired News: Bush's Clone Ban Plan Irrelevant Liberal Anti-Cloners Up to Bat Blaming the 'Defective' People In the ensuing made-for-TV matchups, expect Fukuyama's followers to toss a hand grenade from history - eugenics. Look for Stock and his supporters to cry foul and bat the word away as a relic from the Third Reich.

Science treads the boards
Forum: November 2004 What are the challenges and pitfalls of putting science on the stage? Sidney Perkowitz reports from a recent conference that examined the links between scientific subjects and drama Ham and eggs belong together, no question; and so, with equal assurance, do yin and yang or law and order. But when it comes to pairing science with art, things have become more tricky since Leonardo da Vinci embodied both. Few of us nowadays can achieve this, and it has become harder to emulate Leonardo. Nevertheless, we try, because there is fascination and value in exploring the messages that science and art can exchange with each other. That was one reason I attended a conference called "Theatres of Science: Crossovers and Confluences", which was held in September at the University of Glamorgan in the UK. A total of 70 delegates attended from the UK and beyond.
Dramatic consequence
I have been to conferences before that combine science with literature or the visual arts, but "Theatres of Science" is the first I know of to celebrate connections between science and the dramatic arts. The conference was organized by Michael Carklin, who - along with his Glamorgan colleagues - accepted presentations from directors, actors, performance artists and dancers as well as from playwrights, scientists, educators and literary scholars. The result was a highly varied meeting. I attended as a physicist who has written plays and performance pieces with scientific themes; I also gave a presentation with the playwright Lauren Gunderson.

Wetmore made a detailed and exhaustive survey of Panama's birds, covering the entire isthmus with his explorations. The culmination of this extensive work was the publication of The Birds of the Republic of Panama The records include correspondence, field reports, itineraries, photographs and photographic data, expense records, permits, notes, newsclippings, reference materials, and memorabilia. The correspondence, which is mostly with Smithsonian officials and staff, not only documents Wetmore's work, but also provides useful information on day-to-day activities at the Institution during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Letters written by John Enos Graf are of particular importance. Researchers should also see collection division 13 for photographs relating to Wetmore's field explorations in Panama.

Unit 23 Cosmology OVERVIEW Cosmology and cosmogony are considered. The development of the Steady State Theory by Hoyle and the Big Bang Theory by many are reviewed. A summary of Big Bang models and their properties which lead to opened, flat, and closed universes is given. The importance of the amount of non-luminous dark matter in constraining these models is emphasized. The four fundamental observations that are explained by Big Bang models are reviewed: the expansion of the Universe, the evolution of objects, the observed amount of helium, and the 3 K cosmic background radiation. Ideas about the early Universe and what may have existed before the Big Bang are mentioned. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this unit you should be able to: 1. Broadly explain what the topic of cosmology entails. 2. Conceptually discuss the Steady State Theory of Hoyle. 3. Explain why the Steady State Theory is likely to be incorrect. 4. Conceptually discuss the Big Bang Theory, first introduced by Friedmann and LeMaitre, and the Big Bang models (and their geometries) that lead to opened, flat, and closed universes. 5. Discuss the amount and importance of the non-luminous dark matter.

This paper describes a way of measuring presence within virtual worlds using a self-report questionnaire developed for this purpose. The method was tested and validated with user tests at the Bauhaus University involving about 40 test subjects.
A growing body of research into human-computer interface design for virtual environments (VE) concentrates on the problem of how to involve the user in the virtual environment. This effect, mostly called immersion or the sense of presence, has been subject to a lot of research activity. This research focuses on the influence of technical and technological parameters on the sense of presence. However, little work has been done on the effects of experienced sense of presence. One field where a sense of presence is necessary for the successful application of VEs is the treatment of acrophobic patients. Our goal is a) to create a theoretically-based self- report measurement for presence and b) to measure presence independently from its effects in order to assess their relationship.
