Dear Walter, and other friends,
There seems to be certain disagreement as to whether Hilbert was
sufficiently acquainted with contemporary Italian mathematics before his
"Grundlagen der Geometrie" (GG) was published in 1899. It has been noticed
time and again that the great Peano is absent in that 'ars magna'.
In a recent article [1], dedicated to David Fowler on the occasion of his
60th birthday, Jeremy Gray remarks:
Toepell [2] shows that although Hilbert did not read Italian
easily, he listed Peano's book on the Grassmann calculus in
its German translation [3] as one of the books on the axioms of geometry. Toepell therefore disagrees with Morris Kline's

Newsletter #46 The Freudenthal Institute
Theres nothing quite like setting out to look for a pot of gold and finding instead a gold mine. Its called the Freudenthal Institute . I went in wearing one hat and hoping for a few ideas, and wound up switching hats so often that I may never again be able to comb my hair, and with so many ideas that I very much doubt that I will ever get every one of them sorted out. A little background is perhaps in order. The past couple of years have revived in me a long dormant love affair with the Netherlands and the Dutch people and language (by a process involving Hildegard von Bingen and the Camino de Santiago, but thats another story.) I therefore decided that my summer itinerary would include a stay with some Dutch friends. Then there floated into my mind the vague memory of an institute where a bunch of Dutch academics do Interesting Things with regard to K-12 education. Given my memory that the Dutch school system has a lot in common with ours, and my observation that their results on the TIMSS testing were quite stellar, I decided (with my

Biographical Note
Jones was raised in Albany, Texas and attended the University of Texas at Austin where he completed his doctoral thesis under the direction of R. L. Moore in 1935. He was a topologist who worked in continua and in abstract spaces and originated the famous normal Moore space problem. Jones' primary teaching posts were at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of North Carolina and the University of California at Riverside. During his career, he published over 40 mathematical papers. Return to the Table of Contents

Neither do I. > Mr. P.: Now I know the two numbers. > Mr. S.: Now I know the two numbers. What are the two numbers? This is the one that appeared in Brian Smith's ``The Semantics of Clocks'' with the note ``This puzzle appeared in the AI community in the late 1970's but its origins or author seem to have been lost.'' I suspect the problem is not nearly so young. The assumption in these problems that is hardly ever mentioned is that the ground rules in the first paragraph are to be considered ``public knowledge''. That is to say, both P and S know the other knows these things, each knows the other knows he knows, and so forth. The most common fallacious solutions involve omitting the range of the numbers from the public knowledge. The problem as stated in the rec.puzzles article omits the second sentence of >, but I suspect the latter is an editing error rather than a case of addressing a different problem.

The ICMI Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal medals for 2003 The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), founded in Rome in 1908, has, for the first time in its history, established prizes recognizing outstanding achievement in mathematics education research. The Felix Klein Medal, named for the first president of ICMI (1908-1920), honors a lifetime achievement. The Hans Freudenthal Medal, named for the eight president of ICMI (1967-1970), recognizes a major cumulative program of research. These awards are to be made in each odd numbered year, with presentation of the medals, and invited addresses by the medalists at the following International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME). These awards, which pay tribute to outstanding scholarship in mathematics education, serve not only to encourage the efforts of others, but also to contribute to the development, through the public recognition of exemplars, of high standards for the field. The awards represent the judgment of an (anonymous) jury of distinguished scholars of international stature, chaired by Prof. Michèle Artigue of the University Paris 7. ICMI is proud to announce the first awardees of the Klein and Freudenthal Medals.
