This Week's Finds in Mathematical Physics (Week 162)
John Baez
Since the winter solstice is coming soon, I'll start with some gift suggestions... for the physicist who has everything. 1) The Universe Map, National Geographic Society, 2000, NSG #602011. I've only seen a picture of this 20 x 31 inch map, but I know I want one! In a series of different 3d views, it shows the solar system, nearby stars, the Milky Way, the Local Group and the observable universe as a whole. I'll put it outside my office so my students can figure out just where they stand in the grand scheme of things. 2) Wil Tirion and Roger W. Sinnot, Sky Atlas 2000.0, 2nd edition, Cambridge U. Press, 1999. This is a favorite sky atlas among amateur astronomers. It comes in lots of versions, but Kevin Kelly of Whole Earth says that the most useful is the "deluxe version, spiralbound". 3) Lee Smolin, Three Roads to Quantum Gravity, Weidenfeld and Nicholson, 2000. This is a nontechnical guide to quantum gravity and the different approaches people have taken to this problem: string theory, loop quantum gravity, and the more radical lines of thought pursued by people whom Smolin calls "the true heroes of quantum gravity", like Alain Connes, David Finkelstein, Chris Isham, Roger Penrose and Raphael Sorkin. I haven't gotten ahold of this book, so I can't describe it in detail yet, but it should be lots of fun. That's enough gift suggestions. Now I want to talk about Jordan algebras and how they show up in projective geometry, quantum logic, special relativity and so on. I'll start by reminding you of some stuff from "

Holt and Encyclopaedia Britannica Sign Distribution Agreement for Mathematics in Context
NSF-Funded Middle School Math Curriculum Sales Eclipse Projections

AUSTIN, Texas - March 17, 2004 - Holt, Rinehart and Winston announced today a long-term agreement with Encyclopaedia Britannica that gives Holt exclusive distribution rights to Mathematics in Context (MiC), an innovative middle school mathematics curriculum published by Britannica and funded in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Sales for Mathematics in Context have exceeded projections since Holt first secured exclusive distribution rights to MiC in September 2002. This newest agreement gives Holt rights to MiC until 2013 and increases Holt's stake in future revisions.
Mathematics in Context is based on National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' (NCTM) Principals and Standards for School Mathematics

Math Role of manipulatives in middle and secondary math instruction
The role of manipulatives in introducing and developing mathematical concepts in elementary and middle grades
by Susan Jones: analysis of research about using manipulatives to teach mathematical concepts. (Warning: This is long. )
I. Introduction
Manipulatives are defined as materials that are physically handled by students in order to help them see actual examples of mathematical principles at work. Manipluatives are designed, marketed, purchased, researched and used throughout educational systems, but primarily in elementary schools. Unfortunately, the exact manner in which people do these things is often based more on the definition of manipulatives than on their ultimate purpose. Manipulatives should be used as an effector of understanding and applying mathematical principles, not efficient computation. There is a monstrous assumption behind this progression: that learning mathematics is fully achieved by learning symbolic patterns. It has been clearly demonstrated that learning these patterns produces skill in computation, but analysis of current research demonstrates that without intervention many students learn these patterns and do not progress beyond this into understanding how to use these patterns to solve problems. If manipulatives are wisely incorporated into the curriculum, they can be used at the middle and secondary level to induce understanding of the concepts underlying the computation.

Survey of a Language for Cosmic Intercourse Stampa In this paper we will be concerned with Lincos, a language designed for cosmic intercourse. An exposition of this language is contained in a book by Dr. Hans Freudenthal , published in 1960. 'Lincos' is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase 'Lingua cosmica'. Its intended purpose is to enable us humans to communicate with other intelligent beings that may live somewhere in space, on a faraway planet. This idea is somewhat out of fashion today, but it was quite alive a few decades ago; therefore I'd suggest to the reader to try to take it as a serious problem seeking a good solution. We shall examine Dr. Freudenthal's solution in some detail, and we will conclude stressing a sort of paradox that is implicit in the whole enterprise, an oscillation between a formalist and a communicative trend that makes Lincos a hybrid experiment from the point of view of the design of a perfect language. 1. The problem

http://www.maecla.it/bibliotecaMatematica/af_file/FREUDENTHAL .htm

FELIX KLEIN AND HANS FREUDENTHAL 2003 AWARDS The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) has, for the first time in its history, established prizes recognizing outstanding achievement in mathematics education research. The Felix Klein Medal, named after the first president of ICMI (1908-1920), honours a lifetime achievement. The Hans Freudenthal Medal, named after the eighth president of ICMI (1967-1970), recognizes a major cumulative program of research. These awards are awarded in each odd numbered year. Presentation of the medals, and invited addresses of the medalists, will occur at International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) in Copenhagen on 4 November 2004. The Felix Klein Medal for 2003 is awarded to Guy Brousseau, Professor Emeritus of the University Institute for Teacher Education of Aquitaine in Bordeaux, for his lifetime development of the theory of didactic situations, and its applications to the teaching and learning of mathematics.
