Encyclopedia Fresnel, Augustin Jean ōg¼stăN zh¤N frānĕl ) 1788–1827, French physicist and engineer. He is known for his research on light, especially on conditions governing interference phenomena in polarized light and on double refraction. His work supported the wave theory of light and the concept of transverse vibrations in light waves, which he analyzed mathematically. He devised a method of producing circularly polarized light and promoted the replacement of mirrors with compound lenses in lighthouses. He served as a government engineer during most of his career. Augustin Fresnel Augustin-Jean Fresnel (pronounced [ freɪ 'nel ] in AmE fʁɛ nɛl ] in French May 10 July 14 ), was a French physicist who contributed significantly to the establishment of the wave theory of light and optics . Fresnel studied the behaviour of light both theoretically and experimentally. Fresnel was the son of an architect, born at Broglie ( Eure ). His early progress in learning was slow, and he still could not read when he was eight years old. At thirteen he entered the ‰cole Centrale in Caen , and at sixteen and a half the ‰cole Polytechnique , where he acquitted himself with distinction. From there he went to the ‰cole des Ponts et Chauss©es . He served as an engineer successively in the departments of Vend©e Dr´me and Ille-et-Vilaine ; but having supported the Bourbons in he lost his appointment on Napoleon's return to power.

His early progress in learning was slow, and still could not read when he was eight years old. At thirteen he entered the École Centrale in Caen , and at sixteen and a half the École Polytechnique , where he acquitted himself with distinction. From there he went to the École des Ponts et Chaussées . He served as an engineer successively in the departments of Vendée, Drôme and Ille-et-Villaine; but having supported the Bourbons in he lost his appointment on Napoleon's return to power. On the second restoration of the monarchy, he obtained a post as engineer in Paris , where much of his life from that time was spent. His researches in optics, continued until his death, appear to have been begun about the year
