Rupprecht Podszun Das BGB Start Service Recherche ALTE WERTE Solon von Athen wurde 594 vor unserer Zeitrechnung zum Archonten berufen, und er verordnete seiner Heimatstadt umfassende Reformen: Er entschuldete die Bevölkerung, beschnitt die Privilegien des Geburtsadels und änderte Maße und Münzen. Kaum geschehen, nahm er den Athenern das Versprechen ab, seine Gesetze für zehn Jahre nicht zu ändern. Und dann verschwand er. Ab ins selbstgewählte Exil. Er wird gewusst haben, warum. Das Objekt der Reform-Begierde ist kaum zu überschätzen: Das Bürgerliche Gesetzbuch ist ein Dauerbrenner. Ein Bestseller. Ein Exportschlager. Seit dem 1. Januar 1900 gilt es in Deutschland, in seinen Grundzügen ist es unverändert geblieben. Die Versuche der Nazis, ein deutsches "Volksgesetzbuch" zu entwerfen, scheiterten kläglich. Zwar verdiente sich manch ein noch heute angesehener Rechtslehrer seine nationalsozialistischen Sporen damit, hier und da eine Norm in braunem Sinne zu interpretieren. Doch an der Substanz vermochte niemand zu rütteln. So blieb das BGB über die Weltkriege hinweg in Kraft. Selbst die DDR brauchte bis 1975, um ein eigenes Zivilgesetzbuch auf die Beine zu stellen. Noch heute ist das BGB, wann immer eine handliche Ausgabe vom Münchner Beck-Verlag auf den Markt geworfen wird, auf den Bestseller-Listen zu finden. Nicht nur in Deutschland: Zahlreiche Staaten, von Brasilien über Griechenland bis Thailand, haben sich in ihren Kodifikationen am BGB orientiert. Dieser Erfolg kommt nicht von ungefähr. Denn an der Ausarbeitung des BGB waren hervorragende Männer beteiligt. Nach der Gründung des Deutschen Reiches 1871 sollte das zersplitterte deutsche Landesrecht vereinheitlicht werden. Eine erste, elfköpfige Kommission unter Leitung des Richters Eduard Pape tagte von 1874 bis 1887 - mit dabei war der Professor Bernhard Windscheid, der das alte römische Recht für die Bedürfnisse des 19. Jahrhunderts fruchtbar machte. Nachdem die Öffentlichkeit den ersten Entwurf gefleddert hatte, überarbeitete eine zweite Kommission den Entwurf noch einmal vier Jahre lang. Diesmal war der blinde Hannoveraner Gottlieb Planck - ein Liberaler - die treibende Kraft. 1896 schließlich nahm der Reichstag das Gesetz mit großer Mehrheit an, vier Jahre hatte die Praxis Zeit, sich auf das Jahrhundertwerk einzustellen.

Bundesjustizministerin Herta Däubler-Gmelin erklärte, die Grundgesetzänderung sei "ein notwendiger Schritt auf dem Weg zum Ständigen Internationalen Strafgerichtshof, der in Den Haag errichtet werden soll". Seine Gerichtsbarkeit ist auf Völkermord, Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit, Kriegsverbrechen und Verbrechen der Aggression beschränkt. "Die Schreibtischtäter und Folterknechte dieser Welt sollen sich nirgendwo mehr sicher fühlen dürfen." I especially enjoy well-written, informative articles about scientists and mathematicians. This volume contains 59 such articles, each 3 - 6 hard-hitting pages; so I found this book delightful. Obviously, the unique feature of these biographies is that they are all about women mathematicians. I was struck by how many of the biographies were about living women 40 of the 59 were alive in 1998. This contemporary nature of the volume enhances the impact of these 59 people, who have successfully devoted their lives to mathematics as leaders and contributors in this challenging field. Many, if not all, had to overcome prejudice, discrimination, and bad or misguided counseling to persist and succeed in what was historically a male dominated profession. I'll let Carl Friedrich Gauss' quotation, which he wrote about Sophie Germain and which appears in her entry in the book, speak more directly to this gender issue:

FEB. 26, 2000 The worst assignment of all By LANA WHITED The very worst assignment for a college newspaper reporter is writing the obituary of a fellow student. The Iron Blade staff has had too much experience doing that in my 10 years here at Ferrum. Since 1990, we've reported the deaths of 13 members of the campus community, nine of them under the age of 25. This week, we're faced with the task again. Writing stories about deaths is considered routine in the news business; in fact, obituary-writing is often the first job of entry-level reporters. Because an obituary follows a clear form, it is considered to be "easy." Even if you've never studied journalism, you could write one if you've ever seen one. Following an obituary fact form which is usually supplied by a funeral home, the reporter simply plugs information like names of survivors and details about funeral services into the appropriate places and sends the story off to layout. In some cases, the reporter may write a more detailed article known as a "death story," which does not follow the specific obituary outline and includes more information about the person who died and several quotations from people who knew him or her. This often occurs in the case of people who are prominent (and prominence may apply only to the newspaper's circulation area). The recent death of former Hollins mathematics professor Herta Freitag, reported on page one of The Roanoke Times, is such an example.
