Herta Freitag received the degree Magister Rerum Naturalium, in Mathematics and Physics, from the University of Vienna in 1934, and graduated M.A. (1948), Ph.D. (1953) from Columbia University, USA. After the invasion of Austria on 11 March 1938, life became very difficult for the Taussig family. Her father, who as editor of Die Neue Freie Presse had written several editorials warning of the dangers of Nazism, was dismissed from his post. Months later, Herta Taussig was granted immigration to England where she had jobs as a housemaid, governess, waitress and finally as a teacher, before obtaining the visa which took her to the United States in 1944. Her mathematics career was thus rescued, although effectively suspended for six years. She taught at a school in upstate New York from 1944 to 1948 and there met Arthur Freitag, whom she married in 1950. In 1948 she moved to Hollins College (now University), where her career progressed from instructor to full Professor and departmental chairman, until her formal retirement in 1971. During her years at Hollins College, and throughout her even longer period of retirement, she received many awards. She was the first woman to become President of the Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia Section of the

WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS: FROM HYPATIA TO HERTA FREITAG Margaret Murray, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, will present the talk at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The presentation describes the history of women's involvement with mathematics, emphasizing the key role that women played in mathematical research and teaching in the 20 th Century, especially in the United States. The Virginia Tech Department of Mathematics is sponsoring the event in celebration of Math Awareness Month. The event, which is free of charge, is appropriate for high school and university students, faculty and staff, and community residents. For more information, call Susan Anderson at 540-231-8041 or e-mail her at anderson@math.vt.edu If you are a person with a disability and desire any assistive devices, services, or other accommodations to participate in this activity, please contact Anderson to discuss accommodations at least one week before the event.

The outstanding Fibonacci mathematicians of the 20th century In the 20th century the interest in Fibonacci numbers in modern mathematics again increases. In the first half of the 20th century the considerable results in this area were obtained by the Dutch mathematician Willem Abraham Wythoff and the Belgian mathematician Edouard Zeckendorf. Willem Abraham Wythoff (1865-1939). Many combinatorialists and number theorists know about the Wythoff game but few know anything about the man for whom this subject is named.
Willem Abraham Wythoff (1865-1939) W. A. Wythoff was born in Amsterdam in 1865, the son of an operator of a sugar refinery. He received Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Amsterdam in 1898. From 1899 to 1929, Dr. Wythoff was the collaborator of Revue Semestrielle des Publications Mathematiques, a forerunner of Mathematical Reviews. The Wythoff game originates in W. A. Wythoff , "A modification of the game of nim," Nieuw Archief voor wiskunde 2 (1905-07) 199-202. Dr. Wythoff's own words: "The game is played by two persons. Two piles of counters are placed on the table, the number of each pile being arbitrary. The players play alternately and either take from one of the piles an arbitrary number of counters or from both piles an equal number. The player who takes up the last counter or counters, wins."

"Applications of Fibonacci Numbers" (Volume 7). The famous Fibonacci mathematician Herta T. Freitag in his "Report on the Seventh International Conference on Fibonacci Numbers and Their Applications" wrote: "We did work hard. The sessions started at 9:00 A.M. and extended to the early evening, followed by enjoyable social events, planned by the Local Committee. Even just listening to the titles of the presentations, no one doubt that there is more imagination in the mind of a mathematician than, possibly, in that of a poet".
The Queen of the Fibonacci Association Prof. Herta Fraitag (1908-2000)
The participants of the Conference on one of the public events A record number of 95 papers was presented: the U.S.A. provided 27 of them; Austria 11; Italy and Japan tied with 9 each; France and Germany with 8. 3 speakers came from Canada. However, first 3 papers were presented from Ukraine and Libya. Prof. Stakhov (Ukraine) and his co-authors Dr. Mohamed Samir Elbuni (Libya) and Anna Sluchenkova (Ukraine) presented the following papers:
