Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. This article compares translation and commentary practices surrounding the texts associated with French feminism with those of contemporary French women philosophers more generally. Many of the latter, discussing the history of philosophy, ask questions such as "How do texts play against the means they supply themselves?" and "How are philosophical forces, and the institutions of commentary, countered, destabilized, deregulated?" Deutscher asks what institutional means are available to understand this work as innovative philosophy, and to what extent these projects can usefully be analyzed as the gestures of women in philosophy.

Frege, Gottlob Friedrich Ludwig 1848-1925 Biografi
Logik

V souvislosti s proslulym Fregeho problemem - tvrzeni rovnosti Jitrenky a Vecernice - pripojime radu dalsich zasadnich Fregeho myslenek. Analyza Fregeho koncepce vlastnich jmen vrha svetlo do nejhlubsich zakouti jeho semanticke teorie. V Sinn und Bedeutung (O smyslu a vyznamu, Frege 1992) zacina Frege sva zkoumani otazkou, zda v rovnosti

Grundlagen der Arithmetik( with a description of the situation mathematics finds itself in. With Euclid, what Frege wants to return to is the axiomatic systematic wherein truths rest upon each other in a law abiding order of the more or less fundamental. But, with Euclid, perspicuous figures constitute part of the mathematical proof. That mathematics transcends the Euclidean stringency means, for Frege, that proofs must be drawable in a purely logical manner without intuitive insight via sensible figures. ). But since these relations appear with the demand of being a priori and universal , then they must also be a priori and constitutional for our actual counting practices, and independent of them. It must be possible to make that which lies as the implicit ground for our mathematical practice explicit in the form of a purely logical notational system. The conceptual recording of a priori truths is therefore, for Frege, a recording of a timeless and non-pictorial order which exists objectively, independent of the ability of human psychology of representation.

January 12, 2001 In forming their theories for understanding propositions, both Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell were forced to address basic questions regarding the role of names. Do names serve only as placeholders to denote certain entities, or is there something logically significant about exactly how bedeutungslos and thus prohibits the whole from having a denotation (i.e., a truth-value). Waverley Waverley Russell, however, has no such option, and must again eliminate the identities in the course of analysis. Waverley . The only identities here are between bound variables, where no mode of presentation is at issue and no issue of informative identity can arise. Waverley Waverley . Yet Scott was the author of Waverley The crucial point in this discussion is that for Russell, the problem of substitution in indirect speech appears only through the use of informative identities. The question of whether fully analyzed terms may be found in informative identities is not, to my knowledge, explicitly addressed by Russell; yet it is a question of fundamental importance to his theory. If fully analyzed identities can be proven impossible, then the theory is well-protected from the dangers posed by intensional aspects of names; if such identities can be found to exist, then the theory may well be inconsistent.

BEING
"One of Frege's main semantic principles, is however, missing in Dummett's book, [ Frege: philosophy of language ] and it is has been ignored by most Frege scholars. That principle is the thesis concerning the ambiguity of the word 'is'. Angelelli come close to attending to it when he makes some remarks on identity and predication, and Matthias Schirn puts special emphasis on the role of the thesis in Frege's work. (1) However, the great majority of Frege scholars have neglected the ambiguity doctrine, even when they have commented on each of the allegedly different meanings of 'is' separately. This is strange in view of the fact that it was Frege and Russell who proposed the thesis and established it as one of the basic ingredients of modern logic.17 They have in fact been followed by most philosophers. For instance, in the Tractatus Ludwig Wittgenstein emphasizes the ambiguity of the verb 'to be' and stresses the importance of constructing a language which prevents confusions between the different meanings of 'is'. Wittgenstein also remarks that Frege's and Russell's conceptual notation: is such a language although it does not succeed in excluding all mistakes ( Tractatus , 3.323 - 3.325). This work sets out to show that a large part of Frege's philosophy is an attempt to make us realize the importance of keeping the different meanings of '-s' apart and to catch the philosophical mistakes brought about b': our failure to see the ambiguity.

Frege, Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob (1848-1925)

German mathematician who developed a set of logic symbols. Using the theory of sets, he defined the cardinal numbers in Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik (1884). The cardinal number of a given class is the class of all classes that are similar (can be placed in a one-to-one correspondence) to the given class. In Grundgesetze der Arithmetik (2 vols., 1893 and 1903), Frege began attempting to build up mathematics from arithmetic and symbolic logic on a rigorous and contradiction-free basis. When the second volume was in the process of being printed, Russell pointed out a paradox in Frege's work. The paradox, known as Russell's paradox is the question "is the class of all classes that are not members of itself a member of itself or not?" The question leads to a contradiction and cannot be resolved. Frege was thus forced to admit that the foundation of his reasoning was worthless. As he stated at the end of his work, "A scientist can hardly encounter anything more undesirable than to have the foundation collapse just as the work is finished. I was put in this position by a letter from Mr. Bertrand Russell when the work was almost through the press" (Bell 1986, p. 576). Russell (Bertrand)
