To ground his views about the relationship of logic and mathematics, Frege conceived a comprehensive philosophy of language that many philosophers still find insightful. However, his lifelong project, of showing that mathematics was reducible to logic, was not successful.

Frege, Gottlob (1848-1925) (ch 2)
Frege, a logician and philosopher of mathematics, was the founder of modern mathematical logic, a major contribution to developments resulting in the invention of computers . Among Frege's other contributions are the invention of quantification theory, a method of symbolizing inferences that depend for their validity on expressions such as 'all' or 'some', 'any' or 'every', 'no', or 'none', a defense of logicism, the thesis that arithmetic is reducible to logic, and a defense of the distinction between sense (meaning) and reference (the reference of a sentence is its truth-value; the sense is the sentence's truth-condition(s), i.e. what makes the sentence true). Frege, Gottlob
Encyclopedia Article Frege, Gottlob (1848-1925), German mathematician and philosopher, the founder of modern mathematical logic . Frege was born in Wismar , in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . He studied at the universities of Jena and G¶ttingen, later joining the mathematics faculty at Jena. Frege sought to derive the principles of arithmetic from the principles of logic. Faced with the ambiguity of ordinary language and the inadequacy of available logical systems, he invented many symbolic notations, such as quantifiers and variables, thus providing the foundation for modern mathematical logic. His work greatly influenced the British philosopher Bertrand Russell. Conceptual Notation (1879; trans. 1972) is regarded as the most important of his publications, which also include

Next Gottlob Frege's On Sense and Reference Gottlob Frege’s On Sense and Reference , 1892) is concerned with the question of how the sense (or mode of presentation) of a sign is related to the meaning which is expressed by the sign. Frege examines the question of how the object which is designated by a sign is related to the meaning which is expressed by the sign. He explains that changes in the sense (or mode of presentation) of a sign may change the meaning of the sign, and he describes how changes in the sense of a sign may also change the sense of the expression in which the sign is contained. Thus, he discusses the relation between sense and reference, and he examines the relation between signification and meaning. Frege defines a sign as any name, word, combination of words, or expression which may be used to designate an object. The sense of a sign is the part of its meaning which depends on its mode of presentation. The meaning of a sign is to be distinguished from the object to which the sign refers. The object to which a sign refers may provide the basis for the sign's dimension of reference. However, the meaning of a sign may have both a dimension of sense and a dimension of reference. Frege explains that the mode of presentation of a sign and the mode of reference of the sign to an object may correspond to each other, but the sense of a sign may change without changing the identity of the object to which the sign refers. The identity of the object to which a sign refers may be independent of the way in which the sign is presented.

Logicist about arithmetic not geometry
I changed "Frege was the first major proponent of logicism- the view that mathematics is reducible to logic.". This can be misleading because Frege only held the logicist view with respect to arithmetic and analysis. He believed that geometry is synthetic a priori and hence not a part of logic. edit
boole?
How is the work of Gottlob Frege related to that of George Boole Hirzel 03:06 15 Jun 2003 (UTC) You could say that Frege's work was later, was research rather than exposition, was deeper as an enquiry into language. In fact there is no serious intellectual connection, though obviously there might be some comparison in the use of algbra-style notations. User:Charles Matthews As I know, Boole mostly worked on the theory of classes in logic, Frege was involved rather in the theories of first-order and second-order languages. It's a more general theory, because class theory is a logical theory, the theories of logical languages are metalogical theories (in a particular, relative meaning of metalogics). These statements are a bit inexact, but I can't explain it detail, cause English is not my original language, however it is true the relation between Boole and Frege is a quite neglected area in the Frege-research. I have no sources about it and I think even if some exists so they are unpopular (f.e. not foundable in internet or in public libraries).
