      Introduction
In object recognition applications, the objects of interest are often modelized in the system database by their shape, and thus, an important step of the recognition process consists generally to look for known shapes in an image. In many applications, two-dimensional shapes are given by the planar curves forming their boundaries. Consequently, a natural problem in shape comparison and recognition is to measure how much two given curves resemble each other. Naturally, the first question to be answered is what distance measure between curves should be used to reflect the intuitive notion of resemblance. One possibility consists in approximating each curve by a set of points and then using the Hausdorff distance , which is defined as follows: (eq. 1) where d is the underlying metric in the plane, for example the Euclidian distance, and A and B are the two sets of points describing the two curves to be compared. While the Hausdorff distance is an appropriate measure in many applications, the following figure shows an example where it is not. The two curves have a small Hausdorff distance, but do not look like each other at all. Figure 1 : Problem with Hausdorff distance
As performing mathematical operations on a curve of arbitrary shape turns out to be difficult in some cases, it is often useful to approximate a curve by a polygonal curve. A polygonal curve

American co-winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for discovering that a gas, nitric oxide, acts as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system. This work, performed in the 1980's, uncovered an entirely new mechanism for how blood vessels in the body relax and widen. It led to the development of the anti-impotence drug Viagra and potential new approaches for understanding and treating other diseases. He was a co-worker with Robert F. Furchgott and Louis J. Robert Sinclair Dietz was an American geophysicist and oceanographer who presented a theory of seafloor spreading in which new crustal material continually upwells from the Earth's depths along the mid-ocean ridges and spreads outward at a rate of several centimetres per year (1961). While a student Dietz identified the Kentland structure in Indiana as a meteoric impact site. He later achieved prominence by studying meteorite craters and demonstrated that asteroid and meteor impacts have been important geological processes acting for billions of years on both the Moon and the Earth. (NASA) Born 2 Sep 1948; died 28 Jan 1986.
Astronaut, first teacher in space, who died on the Challenger Space Shuttle when 73 seconds into its 10th launch, Challenger (STS-51L) exploded in midair, killing its crew of seven. Space shuttle flights were suspended until 1988. An independent U.S. commission blamed the disaster on unusually cold temperatures that morning and the failure of the O-rings, a set of gaskets in the rocket boosters. C. Wilson Markle Jr. Born 2 Sep 1938
Canadian engineer, inventor of the film colorization process (1983). Head of Colorization Inc., a Toronto-based subsidiary of Hal Roach Studios. Computers are used to assign predetermined colours to shades of gray in each scene.

Born 2 Sep 1923
French mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1958 for his work in topology, in particular on characteristic classes, cobordism theory and the Thom transversality theorem. Thom is also known for his later work developing the catastrophe theory (1972), a mathematical treatment of continuous action producing a discontinuous result. Thom's theory is an attempt to describe, in a way that is impossible using differential calculus, those situations in which gradually changing forces lead to so-called catastrophes, or abrupt changes. The theory has widespread application in the physical and biological sciences and in the social sciences, but eventually fell from favour.
