Philip Burnett Franklin Agee was born in 1936. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1957 and worked as a case officer in several Latin American countries. Agee later claimed: "My eyes began to open little by little down there as I began to realize more and more that all of the things that I, and my colleagues were doing in the CIA had one goal that was that we were supporting the traditional power structures in Latin America. These power structures had been in place for centuries. Where in a relative few families where able to control the wealth and income and power of the state and the economy. To the exclusion of the majority of the population in many countries. The only glue that kept this system together was political repression. I was involved in this. Eventually I decided I didn't want anything more to do with that." Agee resigned in 1969 and began work on a book about his experiences. Ted Shackley head of the CIA's Western Hemisphere Division, was given the task of trying to stop the book from being published. Agee moved to Cuba and his book

Philip Freneau - On The Death Of Dr. Benjamin Franklin Thus, some tall tree that long hath stood The glory of its native wood, By storms destroyed, or length of years, Demands the tribute of our tears. The pile, that took long time to raise, To dust returns by slow decays: But, when its destined years are o'er, We must regret the loss the more. So long accustomed to your aid, The world laments your exit made; So long befriended by your art, Philosopher, 'tis hard to part! When monarchs tumble to the ground, Successors easily are found: But, matchless FRANKLIN! what a few Can hope to rival such as YOU, Who seized from kings their sceptered pride, And turned the lightning darts aside.

Senator SMITH. Mr. Franklin, I was somewhat persistent in my inquiries from you yesterday as to the time when you received the first information regarding the collision between the Titanic, of your line, and the iceberg. Mr. FRANKLIN. Quite right, sir. Senator SMITH. You have been kind enough to file with me telegrams, wireless, cable, and otherwise, between your offices in England and the officers of your ships, and their communications with you. As we figured out yesterday, your first authentic information came in answer to a telephone message from you to your office in Montreal about 2.30 Monday morning? Mr. FRANKLIN. Of course, as I have said before, Senator Smith, we considered that our first really authentic information came from Capt. Haddock. Our telephone message to Montreal was to ask Montreal could confirm this rumor. Our Montreal representative replied about an hour later saying that he had confirmation of the rumor in Montreal. Senator SMITH. That comes back to my information from the Virginian?

Franklin Inducted into Alumni Hall of Fame
For Immediate Release Feb. 23, 2005 COLLEGE PARK, Md. Jon Franklin, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, a professor at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism and a graduate of the college, will be inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame this summer by the University of Maryland Alumni Association. Franklin will join 15 other distinguished alumni at an induction ceremony June 4 at the new Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center, currently being constructed on campus. "Jon Franklin is one of the world's leading authorities on what is often called 'literary journalism,' said Merrill College Dean Thomas Kunkel.”He came home to be on our faculty, and we're tremendously proud of his many accomplishments." The induction ceremony will include video interviews and a retrospective on his life. Once inducted, Franklin’s names will appear in bold letters on a wall of the new building. Induction into the Hall of Fame occurs only once every five years and is the most prestigious recognition the association bestows on its alumni. Inductees are chosen by a committee based on lifetime achievements that reflect the excellence of the university. Franklin, who graduated with a bachelor’s in journalism in 1970, won two Pulitzer prizes as a reporter for The Evening Sun in Baltimore – one for feature writing in 1979 and explanatory journalism in 1985.
