List of memoirs of political prisoners
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A memoir is an autobiographical writing normally dealing with a particular subject from the author's life. The following is a list of writers who have described their experiences of being political prisoners . Those included in the list are individuals who were imprisoned for activities ranging from peaceful dissent to violent revolutionary activity. Some were citizens of the countries whose regimes imprisoned them and others were foreign nationals. What connects them is that they have written about their experience of having been imprisoned because of their political opposition or political identity. Note, too, that the list omits many autobiographies which deal, only in part, with a period of political imprisonment; and includes some in which imprisonment forms a major part of the book.

FICHTEANA
An Occasional Newsletter of the North American Fichte Society
No. 4, January 1996 A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR AND (DESKTOP) PUBLISHER Dear friends and colleagues, 1994 and 1995 were banner years for Fichte studies not only in North America but around the world, as is indicated by the exceptional number of conferences on Fichte's philosophy that were held during these two years and by the number of special "Fichte issues" of professional journals that were published or announced. This issue of Fichteana includes reports on several of these conferences and summaries of the contents of many of these new publications, as well as information concerning new editions of Fichte's works, new translations of his writings into various languages, and recent books and articles on or relating to Fichte and the Wissenschaftslehre Now that the bicenntenial anniversary of the first publication of the Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre has come and gone, it is to be expected that the (officially sanctioned and sponsored) attention of Fichte scholars will be shifting to the lectures and writings composed in the period immediately following the publication of the Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre , a distinguished group that includes the Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo Grundlage des Naturrechts System der Sittenlehre (1798), and the various writings associated with the

FICHTEANA
An Occasional Newsletter of the North American Fichte Society
No. 11, August 2001 A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR AND (DESKTOP) PUBLISHER Dear friends and colleagues, Surely it is an indication of the robust health of Fichte studies worldwide that this, the eleventh issue of Fichteana is by far the largest yet. With each passing year the number of monographs, scholarly articles, special issues of philosophical journals, public lectures, symposia, conferences, and international congresses devoted to Fichte and the Wissenschaftslehre grows ever larger. It is a pleasure to observe these long-overdue developments and to report on them in this manner. May the next issue be larger still! Equally newsworthy is the successful biennial conference (our sixth such conference) of the North American Fichte Society, which took place March 22-25, 2001 in the environs of San Diego, California. More than two dozen papers were presented on the theme "The Political, Social, and Legal Philosophy of J. G. Fichte." Taking advantage of the proximity of the Pacific Ocean, this conference also featured what is surely the world's first Fichte Beach Party. Wayne Martin is to be congratulated for his superb work as local conference coordinator. A number of other conferences on Fichte and German Idealism were also held over the past half year, including a major conference sponsored by the International Fichte Society at the Humboldt University in Berlin, as well as the first Fichte conference ever to be held in Portugal. (For details on these and other conferences, see below.)

33. Commentary, September 26, 2001 — Iridology — Still! Astrology — More! Dowsing
That was taken from The Science of Illusions, translated by franklin philipand published by Cornell University Press, written by Jacques Ninio,
http://www.randi.org/jr/092801.html
September 26, 2001
Having some printing done recently, I was shown a beautiful, expensive, laminated chart turned out by a Dr. David J. Pesek, Ph.D., illustrating the quackery known as "iridology." This is a notion that the iris of the eye is a chart of the body, indicating weaknesses that show up as irregularities in the patterns displayed in the colored portion of the eye. Dr. Pesek's detailed color photographs of various eyes are accompanied by descriptions of his diagnosis of the ailments he deduces from examination of each iris. One example will serve to illustrate how comprehensive and penetrating his discernment is. Under the heading, "Thought/Emotion Predisposition," we see: Reduced mental and emotional stamina; feeling less control in life; increased psychological challenges; sensitivity to imbalances; intermittent motivation. And under "Physical Predisposition," he writes: Lowered metabolism and elimination of waste products; tendency toward hernias; prolapsus and joint weakness; overall decreased vitality. . . . . x-rays, blood tests, other types of tests and MRI's are examples of several other assessment tools, of which there are many more. Last, but certainly not least, is Iridology.

The core of the book is eight chapters based on his classification system of illusions. Categories include illusions based on contrasts, on constancies, and on the limits of the human perceptual system. His eight categories are put forward to replace the well-known system of the perceptual psychologist R. L. Gregory, editor of the journal Perception. Gregory's classification can be found in volume 20 (1991), pages 1-4. Yet many of the illusions discussed are geometrical - of the 'see how this line appears longer than that line' variety. I was pleasantly pleased to experience some illusions I had not seen before. But some did not work for me; what was purported to look larger sometimes looked smaller, or vice versa. One illusion, in which it is supposedly "practically impossible to count" all the dots, was a breeze - I counted all the dots correctly three time in a row, and quit. Ninio also includes one of the first tactile illusions - Aristotle's argument that if you cross your fingers over a ball it feels like two balls. I have tried this many times and never experienced the illusion of two balls; in fact, I do not think I have ever met anyone who experiences it. Perhaps it is the authority of Aristotle, still prevalent in some philosophical circles, that keeps it alive. I was surprised that there was no mention of the Necker Cube anywhere in the book.

Bruno Tertrais
Translated by Franklin Philip Hardcover
Current Affairs / Political Science A SOBERING MEDITATION ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF AMERICA'S ENGAGEMENT IN IRAQ, FROM ONE OF EUROPE'S KEENEST OBSERVERS AND STRATEGISTS ON INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
The struggle between us and them . . . began centuries ago, and will continue until judgment day.
. . . it may never end. At least, not in our lifetime.
War Without End offers a comprehensive examination of the ideas and policies that may have led us into a century of combat. An international authority on nuclear nonproliferation, Bruno Tertrais is uniquely able to look at American political and military thinking since World War II and to trace the ideology that has created the present impasse, including the most thoroughgoing account available of the neo conservative players and ideas that guided the Bush administration into Iraq. War Without End demonstrates that the Iraq invasion is part of a global strategy whose negative consequences are already apparent. Have we unleashed forces, here and abroad, that will trap future generations? These are the questions raised by this brilliant and disturbing book. Bruno Terrains is a Senior Research Fellow at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris and was a RAND Corporation fellow. He is the author of numerous books and articles in English and French, including
