America's Real Religion
The issue of religion and government is a major debate in the United States of America. Fortunately, the Supreme Court of the United States researched the religion clauses of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution long before it made decisions about such matters as required prayer ( Engel v. Vitale, 1962) and required Bible reading ( Abington v. Schempp, 1963). In 1879 ( Reynolds v. U.S. Everson v. Board ), and 1948 ( McCollum v. Board

FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN
, newspaperman, scientist, inventor, philosopher, politician, and diplomat. Born in Boston, the son of a soap maker, Franklin was apprenticed to his printer brother James at twelve. He was soon contributing witty essays to James's newspaper under various pen names. In 1723 he moved to Philadelphia and launched the Pennsylvania Gazette, which rapidly became the most successful newspaper in the colonies. His Poor Richard's Almanack, which he published from 1733 to 1758, was studded with wry aphorisms Franklin borrowed from numerous sources and frequently rewrote. He helped launch projects to pave, clean, and light Philadelphia's streets and founded the American Philosophical Society, the first circulating library in America, and an academy that grew into the University of Pennsylvania. In 1743 he invented a heat-efficient stove to warm houses. Retiring from newspapering in 1748, he turned to the study of electricity. His observations, including his famous experiment with a kite to verify the identity of electricity and lightning, won him world fame. Already a leader in Pennsylvania's politics, Franklin went to England in 1757 to represent the colony in its quarrel with the descendants of William Penn. He remained there until 1775, becoming agent for several other colonies and de facto ambassador for all thirteen. At first a strong believer in the value of a united empire, he grew disillusioned with England's corrupt politics and aristocratic society, though he made lasting friendships with many prominent men. In 1765 American objections to the Stamp Act caught him by surprise, but he quickly joined the opponents. His testimony before Parliament helped persuade the members to repeal the measure.

88. Quick Biography Of Benjamin Franklin
Concise illustrated biography covers the most important aspects of franklin's life.
http://www.ushistory.org/franklin/facts/index.htm
Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. He was the tenth son of soap maker, Josiah Franklin. Benjamin's mother was Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah. In all, Josiah would father 17 children. Josiah intended for Benjamin to enter into the clergy. However, Josiah could only afford to send his son to school for one year and clergymen needed years of schooling. But, as young Benjamin loved to read he had him apprenticed to his brother James, who was a printer. After helping James compose pamphlets and set type which was grueling work, 12-year-old Benjamin would sell their products in the streets.
Apprentice Printer
When Benjamin was 15 his brother started The New England Courant the first "newspaper" in Boston. Though there were two papers in the city before James's Courant , they only reprinted news from abroad. James's paper carried articles, opinion pieces written by James's friends, advertisements, and news of ship schedules. Benjamin wanted to write for the paper too, but he knew that James would never let him. After all, Benjamin was just a lowly apprentice. So Ben began writing letters at night and signing them with the name of a fictional widow, Silence Dogood. Dogood was filled with advice and very critical of the world around her, particularly concerning the issue of how women were treated. Ben would sneak the letters under the print shop door at night so no one knew who was writing the pieces. They were a smash hit, and everyone wanted to know who was the real "Silence Dogood."

, author, scientist, philosopher, and statesman. Franklin published Poor Richard's Almanack and the Pennsylvania Gazette . He organized the American Philosophical Society and improved the postal service while he served as deputy postmaster general for the colonies. As a scientist and inventor he experimented with electricity, devised the lightning rod, created the Franklin stove, and developed bifocals. His significant contributions as a statesman included the Albany Plan in 1754; in 1766 he helped convince the British Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act . Franklin, who was a member of the Second Continental Congress , served on the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence . He then became the first American minister to France during the American Revolution and successfully acquired French aid against Great Britain. He helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris with Great Britain in 1781-83. As a Pennsylvania delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, he served as a calming influence and broker of compromise between the large and small states and the free and slave states. Franklin was the only person to sign all four of the great documents of the period: the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Treaty of Paris with Britain, and the U.S. Constitution.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Franklin, Benjamin (1706-1790), American printer, author, diplomat, philosopher, and scientist, whose many contributions to the cause of the American Revolution (1775-1783), and the newly formed federal government that followed, rank him among the country’s greatest statesmen. Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston. His father, Josiah Franklin, a tallow chandler by trade, had 17 children; Benjamin was the 15th child and the 10th son. His mother, Abiah Folger, was his father’s second wife. The Franklin family was in modest circumstances, like most New Englanders of the time. After his attendance at grammar school from age eight to ten, Benjamin was taken into his father’s business. Finding the work uncongenial, however, he entered the employ of a cutler. At age 13 he was apprenticed to his brother James, who had recently returned from England with a new printing press. Benjamin learned the printing trade, devoting his spare time to the advancement of his education. His reading included

He received some formal education but was principally self-taught. After serving an apprenticeship to his father between the ages of 10 and 12, he went to work for his half-brother James, a printer. In 1721 the latter founded the New England Courant, the fourth newspaper in the colonies. Benjamin secretly contributed 14 essays to it, his first published writings. In 1723, because of dissension with his half-brother, Franklin moved to Philadelphia, where he obtained employment as a printer. He spent only a year there and then sailed to London for 2 more years. Back in Philadelphia, he rose rapidly in the printing industry. He published The Pennsylvania Gazette (1730-48), which had been founded by another man in 1728, but his most successful literary venture was the annual Poor Richard 's Almanac (1733-58). It won a popularity in the colonies second only to the Bible, and its fame eventually spread to Europe.
