Ben Franklin On Freemasonry F reemasonry has tenets peculiar to itself. They serve as testimonials of character and qualifications, which are only conferred after due course of instruction and examination. These are of no small value; they speak a universal language, and act as a passport to the attentions and support of the initiated in all parts of the world. They cannot be lost as long as memory retains its power. L et the possessor of them be expatriated, shipwrecked or imprisoned, let him be stripped of everything he has got in the world, still those credentials remain, and are available for use as circumstances require. T he good effects they have produced are established by the most incontestable facts of history. They have stayed the uplifted hand of the destroyer; they have softened the asperities of the tyrant; they have mitigated the horrors of captivity; they have subdued the rancor of malevolence; and broken down the barriers of political animosity and sectarian alienation. O n the field of battle, in the solitudes of the uncultivated forest, or in the busy haunts of the crowded city, they have made men of the most hostile feelings, the most distant regions, and diversified conditions, rush to the aid of each other, and feel a special joy and satisfaction that they have been able to afford relief to a Brother Freemason."

Benjamin Franklin
was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston Massachusetts. Franklin was one of the leading founding fathers of the United States of America. He signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, and served as the new nation's ablest diplomat. Franklin's formal schooling ended early but his education never did. He believed that "the doors to wisdom are never shut," and read every book he could get his hands on. Franklin taught himself simple algebra and geometry, navigation, logic, history, science, English grammar and a working knowledge of five other languages. Franklin had a simple formula for success. He believed that successful people worked just a little harder than other people. Benjamin Franklin certainly did. He built a successful printing and publishing business in Philadelphia; he conducted scientific studies of electricity and made several important discoveries; he was an accomplished diplomat and statesman; he helped establish Pennsylvania's first university and America's first city hospital. He also organized the country's first subscription library. Franklin was also unequaled in America as an inventor until Thomas Edison . He invented the Franklin stove, bifocal eyeglasses and the lightning rod. Franklin wasn't greedy about his inventions, preferring to have them used freely for the comfort and convenience of everyone. Thomas Jefferson called Benjamin Franklin "the greatest man and ornament of the age and country in which he lived."

intelligence, passion, courage, dévotion, charisma, tenacité, persévérance, générosité, pardon Franklin posséda tous ces qualités et c'était pourquoi il était considéré d'être l'un des plus grands savants américains. Introduction
Print Preview of Section Franklin, Benjamin (1706-1790), American printer, author, diplomat, philosopher, and scientist, whose many contributions to the cause of the American Revolution (1775-1783), and the newly formed federal government that followed, rank him among the country’s greatest statesmen. Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston. His father, Josiah Franklin, a tallow chandler by trade, had 17 children; Benjamin was the 15th child and the 10th son. His mother, Abiah Folger, was his father’s second wife. The Franklin family was in modest circumstances, like most New Englanders of the time. After his attendance at grammar school from age eight to ten, Benjamin was taken into his father’s business. Finding the work uncongenial, however, he entered the employ of a cutler. At age 13 he was apprenticed to his brother James, who had recently returned from England with a new printing press. Benjamin learned the printing trade, devoting his spare time to the advancement of his education. His reading included

American printer, writer, politician, diplomat, and scientist. He invented bifocals and the Franklin stove. He also experimented with Leyden Jars In 1752, he flew a kite attached to a silk string in a thunderstorm, and showed that a metal key tied to the thread would charge a Leyden jar (Incidentally, the next two people who attempted the experiment were killed in the effort.) His experiments with Leyden jars showed that they discharged more easily if near a pointed surface. He thus suggested the use of lightning rods. He named the two kinds of electricity positive and negative, unfortunately assigning negative charge to what later was found to correspond to material with an excess of electrons

Philadelphia, PA 17 April 1790 author, printer, scientist (electricity, physics, oceanography, meteorology), diplomat Benjamin Franklin, in addition to his other pursuits, was interested in promoting spelling reform. In 1768, while living in London, he wrote A Scheme for a new Alphabet and a Reformed Mode of Spelling , a reasonably accurate phonetic system for spelling English which, published in 1779, greatly influence Noah Webster. His new phonetic alphabet consisted of 26 symbols: the conventional letters c j q w x , and y were eliminated as redundant and six new characters, were devised for sounds for which he thought there was no unambiguous orthographic representation; see Fig. 1 . The remaining letters of the traditional Roman alphabet were retained but their sound value was strictly defined according to the principle 'one symbol (or unique digraph), one sound'. Thus g could only represent the voiced velar stop, as in give, never the voiced palatal affricate, as in gentle . This affricate and its voiceless counterpart (as in chew ) he represented by clusters of stop plus palato-alveolar fricative (the fricative portion being the voiceless one in both cases). Other notable features of his system are: 1) the use of double vs. single vowel letters to stand for long vs. short vowels, e.g.

The complete biography (with pictures) of benjamin franklin from the beginnings of the American Revolutionary war to the Treaty of Paris . . .

"I cannot but lament . . . the impending Calamities Britain and her Colonies are about to suffer, from great Imprudencies on both Sides Passion governs, and she never governs wisely Anxiety begins to disturb my Rest . . .
Benjamin Franklin Feb. 5, 1775 In his many careers as printer, moralist, essayist, civic leader, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, and philosopher, Benjamin Franklin became for later generations of Americans both a spokesman, a model for the national character, and considered as a "Founding Father." He was born in Boston on Jan. 17, 1706, into a pious Puritan household. His father, Josiah, was a candlemaker and a skillful mechanic, but Benjamin said that his father's "great Excellence lay in a sound understanding, and solid Judgment." He described his mother, originally named Abiah Folger and born on the island of Nantucket, as "a discreet and virtuous Woman." His parents raised a family of 13 children. In honoring them and in a lifelong affection for New England ways, Franklin demonstrated the lasting impact of his Puritan heritage.
~ The Bookman ~ After less than two years of formal schooling, Franklin was pressed into his father's trade, but his more profound talents proved to be intellectual. He devoured books by John Bunyan, Plutarch, Daniel Defoe, and Cotton Mather at home, and, after being apprenticed to his brother James, printer of The New England Courant, he read virtually every book that came to the shop. He generally absorbed the values and philosophy of the English Enlightenment. Like his favorite author, Joseph Addison, whose essays in the Spectator he virtually memorized, Franklin added the good sense, tolerance, and urbanity of the neoclassic age to his family's Puritan earnestness. He rejected his father's Calvinist theology, however, and soon espoused what became a lifelong belief in rational Christianity.

Franklin's Autobiography

In his day there was no such thing as a scientist (the word was first used by William Whewell in 1840); there were only "natural philosophers." At that time, science was the pursuit of gentlemen of leisure or of moonlighting professionals such as lawyers, clergymen and professors. Franklin and his son William fly a wired kite in a thunderstorm in 1752; Franklin touches a metal key to feel a spark. Leyden jars for collecting charge sit at his feet. NOAA image When Franklin sold out his printing business at age 42, he began experimenting with electricity and making observations of the weather. Soon enough, he combined both interests by showing that lightning was natural electricity, a pioneering step in atmospheric science. Five years after he left the printing trade, Franklin was awarded the Copley Medal by the Royal Society of London for his electrical research.

80. Bakken Glass Armonica
Photograph from the collection and information about the instrument made by benjamin franklin and used by German physician Franz Anton Mesmer in his practice.
http://www.thebakken.org/exhibits/mesmer/glass-armonica.htm
Glass Armonica, probably early 1760's Among his many interests and talents, Benjamin Franklin enjoyed music and developed an instrument called the glass armonica, or glass harmonica. He had been delighted by performances on the "musical glasses", a popular 18th century entertainment where a musician would rub the rims of several glasses with moistened fingers. The glasses were filled with varying amounts of water, each glass thus emitting a different tone when rubbed. Before each concert, the performer would tune the instrument by filling each glass with just the right amount of water to insure the availability of all the tones required by the music. Franklin's contribution was to give this set-up a more convenient form. In a letter written in 1762 to the Italian scientist Giambatista Beccaria, Franklin described an instrument he had designed that bore 37 cups. Because the Brillon armonica has only 28 cups and because the pedal apparatus is rather fragile and summary, it is thought that perhaps the Brillon armonica was a prototype, rather than one that was constructed for lasting use. When this particular armonica was built is unknown. A tradition among Brillon's descendants holds that its construction began in England and it was finished for Franklin in Versailles, but even that tradition doesn't include dates for those events.
