Benjamin Franklin was the most famous American in his day. Wherever he went, crowds formed. People worldwide pictured Franklin when anyone said, "American." Trying to comprehend Benjamin Franklin's life and legacy is like trying to grab a shadow. Each time one tries to get a fix on the reflection, it darts away and grows even larger. "Who and what was Benjamin Franklin?" was the question we asked at the outset of this project. His great biographer Carl Van Doren called Franklin "a harmonious human multitude." As Franklin was an "electrician" also, we kept looking for a common current that defined him. From the time he was a teenager thinking about ways of education to the time he was an 83-year-old man agitating for abolition, the mainspring of the "human multitude" may well have been public service. The remarkable Benjamin Franklin, a printer by trade, a scientist by fame, and a man of action by all accounts, continues to shape American thinking and action. The Independence Hall Association, owners of ushistory.org, has commissioned and assembled resources for you to explore the diversity that was Benjamin Franklin.

FRANKLIN BENJAMIN .............. BIOGRAPHY ..............
Benjamin Franklin was quite active politically as well. In addition to serving on the colonial legislature from 1751-1764, he held the posts of deputy postmaster of Philadelphia (1737-53) and deputy postmaster general of the Colonies (1753-74). From 1757 to 1762 and from 1764 to 1775, Franklin lived in England, acting as an agent for Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Jersey and Massachusetts. It was during his second stay that he evolved from an English loyal into a Colonial patriot. The Stamp Act lead Franklin to defend the colonies in the House of Commons. When Franklin returned to Philadelphia in May of 1775, he became a member of the Continental Congress.
During the Congress he was part of the committee that helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Later, he served as president of the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention, and traveled to Europe as a diplomat. Between 1776 and 1779 he worked in France, negotiating for an alliance and for treaties of commerce. With the aid of John Jay and John Adams, he negotiated the Treaty of Paris which brought the War for Independence to a close. From 1785 to 1787 Franklin was back in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. He attended the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and while he was not in complete accord with various parts of the Constitution, he signed it all the same, and even served as a mediator of disputes that arose between different delegates.

Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706-April 17, 1790) was one of the founding fathers of the USA. He was an American statesman, writer, printer, and inventor. Franklin was a delegate to the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania (1785-88), and helped write both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution ; he signed both of these historic documents. He also helped negotiate the peace with Britain at the end of the Revolutionary War (in 1783). Although Franklin had only one year of formal education, this self-taught man helped the colonies become a nation, was a leading scientist, inventor and author, and taught himself several languages and how to play many musical instruments. Many of his inventions are still used today. Late in his life, Franklin was the President of the "Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery." Electricity: Franklin experimented extensively with electricity, determining that there are two types of electricity, positive and negative. In 1752, his experiments with a kite in a thunderstorm (never do this, many people have died trying it!) led to the development of the lightning rod.

Franklin is perhaps the single most multi-talented figure in American history. His accomplishments are too varied to fully describe here; they include signing the Declaration of Independence, publishing the famous Poor Richard's Almanac , serving as postmaster of Philadelphia, founding the first American fire insurance company, living in Paris as American ambassador to France, and inventing useful objects like the lightning rod, the Franklin stove, and bifocal glasses. Franklin also coined dozens of popular sayings, including "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." FOUR GOOD LINKS
