Piero della Francesca was one of the most original men of the renaissance. Piero had two passions - art and geometry - the very things that this course is dealing with. He carried these on at the same time and, we will try to show here, how he integrated the two. Luca Pacioli (c.1445-1517) was a renowned mathematician, captivating lecturer, teacher, prolific author, religious mystic, and acknowledged scholar in numerous fields. He was a link between the Early Renaissance of Piero and the High Renaissance of Leonardo. Leonardo (1452-1519) is considered by many the ultimate renaissance man, skilled in mathematics, philosophy, civil and military architecture, engineering, painting, sculpture, science, music, invention, and the design of weapons. We'll consider Leonardo in our next unit. These three Renaissance men were linked as student to teacher; Piero taught mathematics to Luca, and Luca taught Leonardo. They are also linked by the Platonic solids.

    Piero della Francesca's Polyhedra
Piero della Francesca (1410(?) - 1492) was an outstanding 15th century Renaissance artist , both a mathematician and a painter. His genius in developing the new methods of perspective and employing them in his paintings has withstood the centuries. However, his well-deserved mathematical reputation was lost and only has been regained in this century. That loss was largely due to the fact that Pacioli plagarized Piero's major writings shortly after Piero's death, incorporating them into his published books without attribution. For centuries, the mathematical contributions of Piero were questioned. However, three of Piero's mathematical manuscripts were discovered in the early 20th century, and his reputation regained. Piero is the first of a series of artists whose geometric explorations involved the gradual rediscovery of the Archimedean solids . He rediscovered the five Archimedean solids which are truncated Platonic solids : the truncated tetrahedron truncated octahedron truncated cube truncated dodecahedron , and truncated icosahedron . These were presumably known to Archimedes, but that was not known in Piero's time. In addition, he rediscovered the

Piero della Francesca - Treatise on Geometry
The First Treatise on Geometry of the Renaissance
(Libellus de quinque corporibus regolaribus)
15th Century
he National Critical Edition of the writings of Piero della Francesca starts with the Treatise on Geometry Libellus de quinque corporibus regolaribus , the first in the world dedicated entirely to this fundamental text by the great artist from Borgo San Sepolcro. The Libellus written by Piero della Francesca after the Trattato d’Abaco and De Prospectiva pingendi (both forthcoming publications), was the first treatise on geometry of the Renaissance in which problems relating to the construction and calculation of polyhedrons, which had never before been drawn in stereometric form, were developed. The treatise, which as survived as a single manuscript, the Vaticano Urbinate Latino 632 codex, compiled by an unknown author but accompanied by drawings, corrections and additions made by Piero himself, was dedicated to Guidubaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino. This work was known from the beginning of the sixteenth century, not as belonging to Piero, and not even in Latin but as part of the Divina Proportione by Fra Luca Pacioli, who published it in Italian as his own work. The plagiarism was denounced by Giorgio Vasari and has been the object of heated dispute ever since.

Piero della Francesca (1420-1492)
Piero della Francesca was one of the most respected artists of the early Renaissance . He was born in Italy in 1410 and soon became interested in mathematics, drawing and Latin classics. He studied art with great masters of the day: Domencio Veneziano, Masaccio and Donatello. Piero was famous during his time. He received many commissions for portraits and religious paintings throughout Italy. As an old man, Piero began to lose his eyesight and spent his final years writing books about mathematics, perspective and painting. He died in 1492 at age 82. Piero's paintings are orderly, precise and formal. He made careful observations of the world and painted very realistically. Like many Renaissance artists, he spent many hours using geometry to plan the composition of each artwork. Sometimes he even made models of geometric forms instead of working with live models . He also used light, color and linear perspective to create the illusion of depth in his works. Piero was also the first Italian artist to include a landscape in the background of his paintings.

Friday, April 22, 2005 :: infoZine Staff page views From Filippo Lippi to Piero Della Francesca By Debra Shapiro - Fra Carnevale and the Making of a Renaissance Master Scout Report - infoZine - This special Web feature from the Metropolitan Museum centers around two fifteenth century paintings acquired by two US museums (the Metropolitan and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston) from the Barberini Collection in Rome in the 1930s, that have puzzled scholars for more than a century, and have only recently been identified as the work of Giovanni di Bartolomeo Corradini of Urbino, also known as Fra Carnevale. In addition to investigating the mystery of Fra Carnevale, the Web feature also examines the concepts of artistic identity, in contrast with the Renaissance practice of artworks that issue from the studio of a named artist, that are actually the work of many unnamed artists. To do this, the feature is divided into three sections: "Filippo Lippi", 29 works by Lippi and others trained in his workshop; "An Alternative Vision", seven paintings by artists working within the studio system, but, similar to Fra Carnevale's works, containing unusual elements; and "The Mystery of Fra Carnevale", including the two panels, most likely parts of Fra Carnevale's altarpiece for Santa Maria della Bella in Urbino
