Piero della Francesca , who came from a family of fairly prosperous merchants, is recognised as one of the most important painters of the Renaissance. In his own time he was also known as a highly competent mathematician. In his Lives of the most famous painters ... , Giorgio Vasari (1511 - 1572) says that Piero showed mathematical ability in his earliest youth and went on to write 'many' mathematical treatises. Of these, three are now known to survive. The titles by which they are known are: Abacus treatise (Trattato d'abaco) Short book on the five regular solids (Libellus de quinque corporibus regularibus) and On perspective for painting (De prospectiva pingendi) . Piero almost certainly wrote all three works in the vernacular (his native dialect was Tuscan), and all three are in the style associated with the tradition of 'practical mathematics', that is, they consist largely of series of worked examples, with rather little discursive text. The Abacus treatise is similar to works used for instructional purposes in 'Abacus schools'. It deals with arithmetic, starting with the use of fractions, and works through series of standard problems, then it turns to algebra, and works through similarly standard problems, then it turns to geometry and works through rather more problems than is standard before (without warning) coming up with some entirely original three-dimensional problems involving two of the 'Archimedean polyhedra' (those now known as the truncated tetrahedron and the

Visit to the church San Francesco in Arezzo:
Piero della Francesca's fresco cycle
The Chapel
The work on a fresco cycle in the Cappella Maggiore of the church San Francesco had already begun in 1452 when when Piero della Francesca visited the city. The Florentine painter Bicci di Lorenzo was working in the chapel, he died in 1452, leaving the decoration of the chapel barely begun. Piero probably began to work right after Bicci's death, covering in a few years the walls of the Gothic chapel with the most modern and most advanced - in terms of perspective - frescoes that the Italian 15th century could have created. The 13th century Crucifix with Saint Francis was already in the church when Piero della Francesca frescoed the chapel; it has been recently placed above the main altar.
The Frescoes
The subject-matter of the stories illustrated by Piero is drawn from Jacopo de Voragine's "Golden Legend", a 13th century text that recounts the miraculous story of the wood of Christ's Cross. This popular text, typical of the medieval love for accounts of miraculous events, inspired several other fresco cycles in the 14th and 15th centuries in churches belonging to the Franciscans. The most important iconographical precedent for Piero's stories is Agnolo Gaddi's frescoes painted for the Franciscans of Santa Croce in Florence. The story tells how Adam, on his deathbed, sends his his son Seth to Archangel Michael, who gives him some seedlings from the tree original sin to be placed in his father's mouth at the moment of his death

He delighted in the play of mathematical ratios and painted The Flagellation of Christ (c.1450; Urbino) in a measured, symmetrical manner. His most famous cycle, The Story of the True Cross Golden Legend. Particularly notable are the imposing portrayal of the Queen of Sheba, the stately array of battle scenes, and the stark night scene of the Dream of Constantine. He painted several court portraits, including one of Sigismondo Malatesta before his Patron Saint, a simple geometric conception. This contrasts with the scrupulous detail he used in painting the profile portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino (Uffizi). Piero also executed the massive

Painter, b. at Borgo San-Sepolcro, about 1420; d. there, 1492. The most usual form of his name is the traditional one, PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA, which is better authenticated in contemporary documents than what in late research had been supposed to be the more correct form, PIERO DEI FRANCESCHI (Gronau, Repertorium fur Kunstwissenschaft Vasari , he also decorated a room of the Vatican for Pope Nicholas V. In 1454 he was again at Borgo San-Sepolcro, where in 1460 he painted a fresco of St. Louis of Toulouse, now preserved in the town hall. It was probably between this date and 1466 that he painted his masterpiece, the frescoes in the choir of San Francesco at Arezzo, which may, however, have been begun earlier. The subject is the Story of the True Cross , involving incidents beginning with Adam and including the story of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Constantine and St. Helena, Heraclius and Chosroes. These frescoes rank with those by Masaccio in the Brancacci Chapel as epoch-making in the decorative art of the fifteenth century.
In the spring of 1469 Piero was at Urbino, lodging in the house of Giovanni Santi, the father of

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Metropolitan Museum Director Philippe de Montebello commented: "This exhibition represents a breakthrough of scholarship. That the field of Renaissance art can yield such surprises as Fra Carnevale is truly gratifying." Mr. de Montebello continued, "He has long captivated specialists, not least because the great sixteenth-century artist/biographer Giorgio Vasari ascribed to him a lead role in the formation of the architect Bramante. The ways in which Fra Carnevale mastered and then developed the new art of Florence in a highly sophisticated fashion makes him a paradigm of the Renaissance artist." The exhibition is made possible by Bracco, the diagnostic imaging group.
